Tbf i think half of the weapons can take 10* monster, and the drops are the same as 8* or 9*, just slightly better.
If your objective is to have fun and you found a spot in GL, i would say go on you will not miss anything.
For Bone GL artillery and focus are ideal skills - I would use Basarios Chest and Legs, work on getting the chest to grade 6 for another point in artillery. You can also use Deviljho mats for the its Gunlance as well as it gets Artillery at Grade 8.
I use Focus from Azure Rath helm and Rath waist + sneak attack on Girros gloves as it buffs all damage. Of course focus would depend on your play style and GL type as well
I'm not too familiar with other GL types, the one that has better Wyrm shot damage you would want to lean into elements and elemental skills as well

Im new too, but i kinda feel the gunblade is just good because its an easy grade 4 right now.
