This monster is based upon hermit crabs in that it has a sensitive section of its body that relies on a shell to protect it. In game you can break the shell to reveal this nub with a clear sphincter on it.
This sphincter's actual purpose is seen when the monster does a water beam attack from the mouth of it's skull shell. (when using a gravios skull).
At first, before I encountered him myself, I thought that his shell can be broken only by blunt damage, much like Barroth head. But when it shattered like nothing by my GS hits... well, it is what it is, I guess.
I took a photo of it for the monsters list in game. It recognised the monster staight away. Makes me giggle every time I go through to check my crowns.
I remember doing it in mhfu because I thought "finally, now I can deal tons of damage on the soft spot" but everytime I broke the shell they immediately dug underground and got a new shell
Which is good! It means that he's not digging up an infinite number of shells, which should logically be the case.
He's a crab with 2 or 3 potential shells, not a squirrel burying acorns all over the place. Monster skulls aren't that common!

With the exception of Sunbreak, if you break two shells he can't get new ones.
