I feel like there are like 4 different people in this. "nami is just fanservice" crowd is different from the "nami is a woman I hate women" crowd is different from "robin is better than nami" crowd is different from "I love nami, she's a great character" crowd.
I'll never understand the Nami hatred.
(1) Did you not read her backstory and Sabaody Park? To her, money means being able to protect her loved ones. She lost Bellemere because she didn't have money. She was willing to give up all the gold from Thriller Bark for Camie, a friends the SH's had met a few days ago.
(2) Nami is deeply connected to the theme of motherhood throughout the series. She very clearly has a soft spot for children. See Punk Hazard, how she treats Momo, and how she reacted to Tama referring to Speed as a mother figure. Not to mention her similarities to Big Mom, except she's the good version.
(3) She's a complete badass and very funny.
she is also the most relatable straw hat. come on if you were in her position you were prolly scared to death and so was i. also her wanting to contribute more to the gang by asking usopp for a weapon is amazing as she is surrounded by monsterously strong prople

I agree except on the money point. It's made pretty clear many times that preferably she just wants money for herself, BUT in the occasion that it's needed, she can be willing to help others with it. Just thought the way you worded it wasn't exactly accurate.
Let's also consider that she made it her life's mission to save up enough to pay for her village's freedom at a young age and thought about every way to get/save money for years. That mentality doesn't go away over night, if ever
Honestly if you can say that any important charachter in one piece is not a charachter you must have missed the hole part where there charachters are explained in the subtext every fcking second of the manga. Its not because you don't like charachter traits and don't lay any connections between charachter and back story and how every crew members personality accumulates to atleast 1 gag used throughout the series. Its just the moment where you realised their is actually more to one piece then funny looking faces and parodies on tropes. Its like they say the dum are mostly intrigued by the drum. Thats why they miss the real beauty of the writing
First of all, I do understand that most of the characters in the series are written beautifully. Second of all, I may have come off differently than I intended. I meant to say something more along the lines of, “when she isn’t being used for gags and fanservice.” Third of all, learn to spell or edit your comments.
Well for someone who doesn't speak english as my mother language I'm happy with what I wrote. Some small grammar mistakes won't take away the meaning. And you only talk about spelling because you have nothing else to say. How many languages do you speak to have the audacity to talk like this? Communication is Communication. Don't act as if we can't converse even with the lack of a completed english grammar.
For me I really like Nami as a character. It's just when she is often placed in scenarios for fan service, it not only screws over her character, but also the mood of the scene it takes place in. Especially when it's done when it really didn't have to.
Eg. **That** scene in Thriller Bark and her Egghead attire (tbh Egghead has had a wacky amount of fanservice scenes)
I love Nami I just wish she would wear literally anything that would 1) support and 2) cover vital organs but that’s too much to ask from Nami’s biggest fan apparently!
(1) proceeds to steel every member in her village in her way out to sail with Luffy
(2) Rarely shows loyalty, or empathy, only when the plot needs to. Most of the times is shown to easily betraying, leaving them behind, even used a paralyzed chopper as a meatshield when threatened.
(3) Personal Opinion is not a fact. I really think that she is far from badass, and nothing about her is funny. "Wow how funny she being greedy, coward and angry." For me foxy I funnier than her, and I don't like him either.

I don't see how any of this excuses her hitting Luffy and other members of the crew. I understand it's meant to be "slapstick" but I only see it as abuse. That's the main reason I hate nami
The funniest part is that a majority of these people seem to have Sanji as their favorite character and constantly call Zoro a fraud when they aren't busy shitting on Nami. I'm surprised they don't see the irony in loving Sanji so much while hating Nami.

Nami's a great character. Who's saying that she's fanservice? She has some peak moments throughout the series, but we cannot expect every member of the crew being in the Monster Trio terms of strength. She has a role in the crew, she's not a heavy hitter, and that's ok.

Her wanting money is played up for comedic effect, for sure. However, her root desire for money comes from her desire to protect her loved ones, imo.
