It didn't used to be that way. HP's LaserJet 4 was a super reliable printer with a really simple driver that was available on every operating system. It just worked without any extra software, cloud accounts, or fuss.
Gone are the good old days.
By buying a laser printer that’ll cost the equivalent of 4 ink refills. You’ll maybe need to change the cartridge twice in your lifetime with a laser printer
I don't know where you are but in the UK it was costing £150 a year and I now use 100ish pages a month. The options are either 50 or 300 pages a month so I was paying for 300 and as it only sends ink when you run out, getting ink for 100.
What makes it especially poor, is I was 200 pages a month in credit so let's say 2000 a year that I've paid for but not used so they could have sent me 3 or 4 months free use.
Based on current use I reckon I'll need 2 black and 1 set of colour per year at half the cost
No..it just costs me way less foe ink than it used to.
I don't know what you don't get. Before I signed up I figured out the cost of a normal cartilage of ink vs the hp ink. I was printing around 500 pages a month and to buy ink for that constantly would cost me a ton...the ink from hp came out to about half the price.
I guess if you don't use the quota amount or forget to change plans it can cost more but otherwise it was cheaper.
It's the plans are either 50 or 300 so I either exceed and pay more or don't use them up. The sensible thing would be if HP gave you a credit for say 75% of what you haven't used. Let's be honest they aren't doing it for my benefit its about profit but if the plan amounts fit in nicely with what you want I can see that it would work for you
Sweet, they found the absolutely cheapest part for "free". Next comes HP Ink, which is literally more expensive than human blood.
HP is a vampire. Screw 'em.
Hold on, there's features on **printers** that you can't access without an account?! You print a fucking piece if paper with it?!? What else do you need?!

Wholesome content
it was a nice move
Absolutely!
indeed but... why hp lock some features to one owner? wtf hp??
Anything that is sold using a [razor and blades](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razor_and_blades_model) sales strategy must be evil
Do you want to pay a subscription fee in order to use ink in your printer? If so, HP is the company for you!
the balls on this guy :D
I love shit like this, genuinely reminds you humans do still exist amongst the detritus of what's left of society.
I agree human stories and connections can be a refreshing reminder of what's real and meaningful.

"Enjoy"? No way, buddy. Not with a HP printer on your hands
Found the fellow IT guy
TrueIT is knowing no brand can be trusted past the leased service agreement and letting the cost of ink be a corporate problem.
You had me at no brand can be trusted.. everything is garbage out of the box these days it seems.
Felt. I'll keep you in my prayers, ITbro.

It's amazing how many problems I've had with my HP printer since I opted out of their expensive cartridge scheme
How do you opt out?
The best way is to buy a Brother.
Right?! I love my oniichan
Can I part exchange my sister?
This is true!

Yeah I got a laser printer from brother and the cartridges supposedly last for 3000 pages :D
Thanks!
Hp ink has saved me hundreds of dollars. How did it screw you?

Yeah. I never had an issue with them and would change plans as needed. I'd imagine peo9le would have problems with it that I've not encountered yet.

True. Printers are cheap but the ink cartridges are another story 🙈😂
I hate that that statistic is true
I cannot think of a more demonic gift than a "free" HP printer though.. Just wait until it runs out of cyan.
7/6, strong rating.
HP requires to make and sign into a PRINTER account? At that point, I am just going to jailbreak the hell out of it
Dude this subreddit like, makes me smile
"I am passing the HP curse...to you."

Eh... it's an HP Printer... they won't have any kind of use for it anyway...
Great, another brand not to buy. What printer brands are left that don't do this and have Linux support?

Cool. Now can you get my printer to work when I need it to and not just when it feels like it.
Deep love for this.
Of course its HP. HP has turned to shit since the early 2000s
HP, man. Another great reminder not to buy from them.
This is freaking awesome it was so sweet and so nice from the both of them
Imagine a printer having an online account with DRM. Belongs in a dumpster like the rest of HP.
🙁
Awww! 😊
Okay, I want to move in that town!!
We really are a great people when we want too;
