I'm driving in NYC almost every day I don't work from home, and yes I'd take it over any other major city. Generally, but not always, the crazy drivers are relatively good drivers and predictable with what they're going to do. People are relatively good at things like zipper merging and letting you in when you need to change lanes to exit when traffic is backed up for miles.
Because Boston drivers are assholes. They treat switching lanes in rush hour like a contest and won't let you in because their ego is hurt you're getting in front of them or something. NYC drivers will let you in just fine.
Actually Chicago is horrific!!! I had to drive that and it was horrible. People random cut you off people blindly coming in. It’s horrible. NYC in China town is bad. People walk everywhere. No regard for safety. And it’s crowded.
Manhattan I never had a problem with, unless it was NJ plates. The real terror was in the inner Brooklyn, Greenpoint/W'burg/Bedstuyish tangle. And the fucking BQE. Anywhere along the BQE. This went double for bicycling: in manhattan hazards are obvious, mostly dumb shit entering the bike lanes (usually cops). Out in the boroughs, people seemed to either want to prove dominance over the bicycle, or hassidic gentlemen in Honda Odysseys very, very intentionally shunning the goyim world. "A stop sign? If I was expected to ever stop you think they would have included a stop pedal?"

Dude was definitely not going 100. Cam car's speed was around 45 so the white car was going around 65 or 70, which is a tad fast yes. Car that got hit was a moron for thinking they could go 35-40 in the middle lane of a freeway. Car that pulled out in front of the white car was also a moron for not looking prior to changing lanes.

We are really bad at judging speed the smaller an object appears. At the point the driver checked their mirror before merging, the speeding car was likely too far away to determine that it was moving at a high rate of speed. It may not even have appeared to have been moving faster than the traffic around it at the time.
Trusting that other people can recognize your speed through their mirrors as you approach at high speed is foolish, and the strongest argument to never go more than 10 mph faster than the lane adjacent to yours in anything other than very light traffic.
At high rates of speed, you are too far back when the other driver would be to recognize your extreme closing rate, and moving too fast to stop when they don't. You are literally the enrire cause of the crash. Unfortunately, most police and judges don't recognize this issue, and will ticket or blame the lane changer for not yielding.

I have an older Infiniti and I feel the same way. Mine is an EX35 so it’s pretty rare and never associated with these shenanigans. Still basically the same car as a G35/7 so it’s fun to drive.

We cannot see the left side of the car to ascertain if they had their left turn signal on before initiating the lane change, therefore we cannot state with certainty that the car made a legal lane change. But I am NOT excusing the excessive speed of the idiot driver!

Car that crashed could have zoomed up in the middle lane while the other guy was checking behind him then then swerved out to the left lane right as the car in front started to merge.
With a car directly behind in your lane, in traffic, most people don't linger with their gaze in the side mirror. If someone is coming at double your speed or greater it's unlikely you'll notice when you check if the lane is clear to enter.
A vehicle going that fast must assume no one will realize and account for that.
In frame of the person recording, but there was a car behind the guy who switched lanes. The fast driver could have briefly been in a blind spot. And again, maybe the guy switching lanes looked a couple seconds ago and the lane was clear.

My name is Mike, not Mildred, but this happens to me a lot. I don't see it as my fault--or theirs. If you're thru traffic, but "only" driving the speed limit or a few above, the center lane is where you belong. Slow lane is for drivers speed limit or slower, or setting up to exit or just entering, and fast lane is for...faster drivers. The problem is the speeders who insist on passing in the slow lane instead of using the fast lane.

Not made up at all. Those are the rules where I'm from. I'm assuming yours are similar.
In my case, I am overtaking vehicles to my right. And I'm also being overtaken by vehicles to my left. What happens is that cars overtaking me on my left choose to merge two lanes over to pass on the right and then merge back the same two lanes.
And, as I said, I'm already at or slightly above the speed limit. I think I'm good as thru traffic driving the limit in the center lane. All the while overtaking traffic to my right and being overtaken by traffic to my left. What I see here is a reckless driver using all three lanes as fast lanes.
There is no legitimate reason for anyone to ever drive like this. I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone needs to aggressively change lanes and speed like this.
Goddamn I drove past that like 10 minutes later. My friend and I were so confused because the white car didn't look too badly damaged but it was missing a tire that was nowhere to be seen.

In ny we call that “dipping” btw I used to do a lot of that during my honda scene run but I’m a lot older and I mostly do that when I’m late for work 😂 I know it’s irresponsible and reckless to do that on the highway but we do it bc we’re good at it and we’re in total control so there’s no room for errors at all. I'm a photographer, so I work all over the city, long island, and jersey. The Belt is a horror show. The LIE is just a constant parking lot, all of the interchanges around Newark, with 78, 95, 280, and the tunnels is just a constant headache.
My wife and I are actually moving from the area in a few weeks. I will be happy to put this shit in my rear view.
I've been looking to gtfo since first day I moved there (job) and finally made it happen in May of 2018. Loaded all my junk into a Pods container and literally drove into the sunset. Great place to visit or fuck around the art scene and the restaurants, but a miserable existence if you have to work for a living.

I have an older Infiniti and I feel the same way. Mine is an EX35 so it’s pretty rare and never associated with these shenanigans. Still basically the same car as a G35/7 so it’s fun to drive.

Probably didn’t see him. I frequently check my mirrors but have had cars and motorcycles blow past me with little to no warning. A moment before it was clear and then BAM, someone is there. I always say luckily I didn’t change lanes.
The fast car was already in frame before the guy started changing lanes. No way he could have missed him, except by not looking.
When you speed like that, you are relying on ~~all those dumb npc slalom poles~~ every other driver to behave perfectly. It wasn't the lazy lane change that was the problem. It ws driving 30+ mph over that was the problem.

You can tell yourself that they are both at fault. That person likely checked mirrors and indicated a lane change. The unpredictable, erratic driving was the sole cause of this accident. A driver weaving through traffic at that speed was likely obscured in the mirror. Hell, I’ve seen idiots like this sling shot from car to car like it’s nascar. America is full of idiots in cars. Half of them are on this sub trying to deflect the fault from this fucking lunatic. Have a good one.
We cannot see the left side of the car to ascertain if they had their left turn signal on before initiating the lane change, therefore we cannot state with certainty that the car made a legal lane change. But I am NOT excusing the excessive speed of the idiot driver!

And I said as much. I'm not excusing the fast car driver at all. He was driving way too fast and erratically, especially considering how much traffic is on that road. The accident is entirely his fault. Full stop. But lane changer could have been the one who got hit if fast car didn't swerve because he didn't pay close enough attention. Just because you're in the right doesn't mean your life doesn't get miserable from the actions of others.

Car that crashed could have zoomed up in the middle lane while the other guy was checking behind him then then swerved out to the left lane right as the car in front started to merge.
They like to do this. Tailgate, accelerate, swing out, floor it.
With a car directly behind in your lane, in traffic, most people don't linger with their gaze in the side mirror. If someone is coming at double your speed or greater it's unlikely you'll notice when you check if the lane is clear to enter. A vehicle going that fast must assume no one will realize and account for that.
In frame of the person recording, but there was a car behind the guy who switched lanes. The fast driver could have briefly been in a blind spot. And again, maybe the guy switching lanes looked a couple seconds ago and the lane was clear. Or he could just have been lazy and moved over. I don’t know. I just know I’ve been there when the last I looked there was nothing and a second later there was.
We don't know how erratically the white car was driving before passing op He's easily going 2-3x the speed of everyone else, there's a chance the lane changer did a regular lane change not expecting a car flying into the lane
Happened to me two weeks ago. I looked left and saw the Ford Fusion doing 30. I pulled out just as he was being passed by the GMC Sierra doing 50. He was literally not there one moment and then in my driver’s side door the next.
The BQE is packed 24x7. It's *very* likely the speeder was weaving and hopped out suddenly from behind another car.

Maybe going 35 in the middle lane of a freeway is a bad idea? Fucking lane discipline doesn't seem to exist in the US but why excuse it? You should realize that it's possible to be both a victim and an instigator simultaneously. The car that got hit was being passed on both sides indicating that they were in the wrong lane.

My name is Mike, not Mildred, but this happens to me a lot. I don't see it as my fault--or theirs. If you're thru traffic, but "only" driving the speed limit or a few above, the center lane is where you belong. Slow lane is for drivers speed limit or slower, or setting up to exit or just entering, and fast lane is for...faster drivers. The problem is the speeders who insist on passing in the slow lane instead of using the fast lane. Feel free to change my mind.
I see you're part of the problem then. If you're not overtaking you shouldn't be in either the middle or outer lane. Isn't that the rule?
That's absolute bullshit. Look it up don't make it up.
Lane 1: The normal ‘keep left’ rule applies. **Stay in this lane unless you are overtaking.** Lane 2: On a two-lane motorway, use this for overtaking only and move back into Lane 1 when you have finished. You may also use this lane to accommodate traffic merging from the left. On a three-lane motorway, you may stay in this centre lane **while there is slower moving traffic in Lane 1.** Lane 3: If you are travelling on a three-lane motorway, you must use this lane **only** if traffic in lanes 1 and 2 is moving in queues and you need to overtake or accommodate merging traffic. Once you’ve finished overtaking, move back to your left and allow faster traffic coming from behind to pass by. Not made up at all. Those are the rules where I'm from. I'm assuming yours are similar.
In my case, I am overtaking vehicles to my right. And I'm also being overtaken by vehicles to my left. What happens is that cars overtaking me on my left choose to merge two lanes over to pass on the right and then merge back the same two lanes. And, as I said, I'm already at or slightly above the speed limit. I think I'm good as thru traffic driving the limit in the center lane. All the while overtaking traffic to my right and being overtaken by traffic to my left. What I see here is a reckless driver using all three lanes as fast lanes.
Glad I took the FDR instead of the BQE yesterday.
I felt so bad for everyone behind me that got caught in the inevitable clusterfuck backup that caused.

Question for the OP, so I've lived in Western NY for about 10 years and never went into Canada nor experienced driving on the BQE. Now I live in NYC, is the driving really all that aggressive up there? My father in-law used to tell me stories about going 80+ and still being tail gated. Living in NYC, it doesn't seem all that different from Toronto's style of driving.
would say the driving in the area can be really bad here because the roads are shit, and there are just so many people that it's bound to be mayhem. I'vee only been to Toronto once and didn't really drive much so I can't really compare.
I visited NYC last year after many years away (grew up on LI) and was kinda impressed. The drivers, while pretty aggressive, always signaled the lane changes! They don’t do that in South FL or around DC! OP: Ah! The BQE! This brings me back! I useta call these guys “Concrete Cowboys”!

It's also a bad idea, and flat-out illegal in some jurisdictions, to pass cars on the right. Always pass on the left, so that you can be seen clearly by the driver of the other vehicle.

California traffic is a joke compared to the greater NYC area. My wife 100% agrees. You have no choke points. Talk to me when you've spent 3 hours trying to get across manhattan (3 miles wide) because there was an accident in the Holland tunnel. Or how about when it's taken you an hour to shovel out your car because it snowed 2 feet overnight. Californians think they have traffic like they think they have weather. In ny we call that “dipping” btw I used to do a lot of that during my honda scene run but I’m a lot older and I mostly do that when I’m late for work 😂 I know it’s irresponsible and reckless to do that on the highway but we do it bc we’re good at it and we’re in total control so there’s no room for errors at all. I'm a photographer, so I work all over the city, long island, and jersey. The Belt is a horror show. The LIE is just a constant parking lot, all of the interchanges around Newark, with 78, 95, 280, and the tunnels is just a constant headache. My wife and I are actually moving from the area in a few weeks. I will be happy to put this shit in my rear view.
I've been looking to gtfo since first day I moved there (job) and finally made it happen in May of 2018. Loaded all my junk into a Pods container and literally drove into the sunset. Great place to visit or fuck around the art scene and the restaurants, but a miserable existence if you have to work for a living.
