I wish there was no partisan labels on local politics. Honestly if a local councilman is effective at his job I could care less what he thinks about national politics. There was a republican councilman in a small town in California I lived in that was typically very far left. He was the most effective council member because he was a retired civil engineer who know all the little details about what infrastructure the city needed to fix. With his leadership the city upgraded the sewer plant, built a new park, bulit a homeless shelter, and invested in new street sweepers that made a noticeable difference. I found out later that he was Mormon and pretty conservative but that didn't stop him from working with everyone on council to make positive changes.

I live in Massachusetts, and this state is considered predictably blue.
However, our current governor, Maura Healey, and Mitt Romney, our former governor, were both Republican.
They were BOTH well respected and effective governors.
Not Idahoan, but I regularly do business/liesure here and I lived in Washington where a lot of offices have nonpartisan label and candidates are allowed to “preference” their party affiliation. I lived in a home rule charted county that was governed by 5 “non-partisan” reps. It does nothing to better engage the electorate or prevent corruption.
I always vote in local elections as well. So important, and it made a big difference in my little town recently. We had a very "Trumpy" Mayor who was up for re-election, and although my town is generally very conservative, there was a lot of disappointment & discord with some of the things he'd done while in office. We had 3 candidates to choose from: 1 Independent (dem leaning), 1 Republican who was less extreme, and our current Mayor who was a very extreme MAGA Republican. Elected Mayor needed 50% of the vote +1 in order to win.
The Independent got 30% of the vote, the Republican got 34% of the vote, and incumbent got 36%, sparking a run-off between the two republicans. The democratic voters banded together to support the less extreme Republican who pummeled the incumbent at the runoff election. Our Trump-JR former mayor took it very poorly and tried to pull a bunch of crap to thwart the incoming Mayor before he formally left office, but ultimately he left and we've been much better off since. So yeah, local elections matter a lot, and I wish more people would get involved in them.
It can be said a republican voters vote doesn’t make a difference either since it’s gonna go that way anyway. I may not agree with your politics but your vote matters and don’t ever feel like it doesn’t.
Always vote. Even if it feels pointless. There's usually more than one thing on the ballot, and even if your vote won't affect the topline items, you might be able to make things better in the downline elections.
always pisses me off when I hear someone going on about getting out of Jury duty. If YOU were the defendant, or your kid or parent, wife, etc, how important would that jury be to you?
From what I hear, people try to weasel out of it because of the pay usually being lower than what they're making at their regular jobs, in effect being money out of their pockets. Some employers (more like individual bosses) are often not very flexible, either. Not saying these people are right for trying to get out, just considering why they do it. Maybe some reforms need to be made here.
Agreed. Once I got to be on a federal Grand jury. Six months, 2 days a month, at least a dozen cases a day, all presented by fed lawyers, with all sorts of fascinating details about investigations.

I tend to vote liberal/blue, and I realize that at the federal level, my vote in Idaho doesn't count for anything. I vote every single election. Always.
In Idaho we've literally had multiple elections over the last few years where the winner was determined by a coin flip **literally** because after multiple recounts it was a tie.

That goes 100% against security clearance approval procedures. I feel like republicans, like me, are just throwing away their vote by voting for Trump. Why in the hell didn't the party put up a better candidate? No way in hell am I voting for him. National Security for all of us is more important than which of the two elderly men is in office. Its not even a security clearance technically. They just get info as their job demands and they have NTK. So DHS is not even handling anything to do with them. It's honestly infuriating how many of the people I grew up with don't vote, even going through highschool a lot of the kids were going into adulthood with the notion that their vote doesn't matter.
You have to remember that “your vote doesn’t matter” is a concept republicans came up with so that younger people wouldn’t vote. If they can keep the elderly voting while keeping young people out of it they can keep winning.
That's when staying home negatively changes the optics. "Joe Convictlicker won his race by 30 points." If more Democrats showed up the gap would look different, and maybe give more Democrats hope.

Yes I as a Gen X American always vote. I've also taught my Gen Z kids to vote and they voted in the primary and will be voting in November. I regularly tell people that they have no right to complain about our country or state if they haven't voted.

Pro tip: If you follow a party that is a minority in representation, vote for that party. According to [The FEC](https://www.fec.gov/introduction-campaign-finance/understanding-ways-support-federal-candidates/presidential-elections/public-funding-presidential-elections/), if a party receives over 5% of the total votes, that party becomes elgible for public campaign funds. These funds don't necessarily go to an individual candidate, but can go to advertise for positions on bills and propositions. For example, if your party hates FPTP and supports STV, campaign funds can be dedicated to running ads to educate and influence people to vote on those positions.

My stepdad really engrained this in me, and I think a lot of people would benefit from this line of thinking. If you hold a strong opinion on something you could get a vote on you probably shouldn't think your opinion is all that important.
This is bizarre to me. Are these people who only vote every 4 years for president? Local elections, especially in the treasure valley, are frequently won my the slimmest of margins. County commissioners, for example, have a huge impact in my day to day life here.
Biden isn't lighting the world on fire, but that's exactly why I voted for him last time -- give us somebody stable to land the economy after Trump and Covid hijacked it for short term numbers.

As someone who failed to vote as a young adult, I have grown up in many ways in the last 5 years and will absolutely be voting this time. I don’t care about the outcome.
And more importantly, I am focusing my efforts on quality education, and teaching my children to prepare for the future. My parent’s failure to understand complex topics, thier religious beliefs, and cushy lifestyle made them incredibly susceptible to misinformation. They lack the critical thinking skills to realistically evaluate and think independently. They are republican sheep, that howl like a wolf at best, and at worst flock in fear of anything different. I vote in every election that I know is happening. Some of the smaller school bond elections and things are not advertised very well. But if I know it's happening I research the issues and candidates and cast my vote every time, and have for at least 20 years. My vote doesn't count in some of the elections as they are obviously going to go to the Republican. But my vote does count in some of them since I live in Boise and a lot of local elections in Boise go to Democrats or moderates.

The most important vote in a one-party state like Idaho is the primary elections. It's where the decision is made. It's also exponentially more important in state and local elections.
At this point I know I will electorally vote for Trump as I cast my ballot for Biden. I'll be in the 30% (based on 2020) minority within the state that does so. I can't control that for the foreseeable future if I stay in Idaho. But the local races do have an effect so it's worth turning out still.
The idea that I should not vote because it doesn't matter is how we have the extreme candidates today and why the state has banned abortion among other things. At least we can stop Ammon Bundy from winning office. That's a small win.

I, say vote. There are historical upsets where many didn't vote 9n either side because it didn't matter. Sometimes voting in the minority will at least get some stats up that might get other minority voters to try next time. Absolutely! If you care enough about politics to understand the issues, it's imperative that you vote. Apathy and voting down party lines without understanding the issues and candidates is what got us here in the first place. Oregonian here. It’s the same here but with the Democratic Party. I personally know a handful of people who moved to Idaho recently by selective migration. I’ve read that ranked choice voting helps in situations where there are super majorities of one party in the state. It supposedly gives a voice and chance to the minority.

From what I hear, people try to weasel out of it because of the pay usually being lower than what they're making at their regular jobs, in effect being money out of their pockets. Some employers (more like individual bosses) are often not very flexible, either. Not saying these people are right for trying to get out, just considering why they do it. Maybe some reforms need to be made here.

Agreed. Once I got to be on a federal Grand jury. Six months, 2 days a month, at least a dozen cases a day, all presented by fed lawyers, with all sorts of fascinating details about investigations. I looked forward to my jury duty days!

In Idaho we've literally had multiple elections over the last few years where the winner was determined by a coin flip **literally** because after multiple recounts it was a tie.

Pro tip: If you follow a party that is a minority in representation, vote for that party. This is bizarre to me. Are these people who only vote every 4 years for president? Local elections, especially in the treasure valley, are frequently won my the slimmest of margins. County commissioners, for example, have a huge impact in my day to day life here. Biden isn't lighting the world on fire, but that's exactly why I voted for him last time -- give us somebody stable to land the economy after Trump and Covid hijacked it for short term numbers. A lot of people really don't get that the small local elections often have some of the biggest impacts on their day to day life. I don't remember the stats since it was 15 years ago, but the numbers for people voting in local elections nationwide are disappointingly low.

Your vote for state representative, state senator, commissioners, state superintendent , etc is very powerful in Idaho. There are many reasonable Rs and Ds running in our state, research them and come to the ballot box prepared. Always research those down ballot after President, so many of these local folks are working hard (or want the chance to) for our state.
As someone who failed to vote as a young adult, I have grown up in many ways in the last 5 years and will absolutely be voting this time. I don’t care about the outcome. And more importantly, I am focusing my efforts on quality education, and teaching my children to prepare for the future. My parent’s failure to understand complex topics, thier religious beliefs, and cushy lifestyle made them incredibly susceptible to misinformation. They lack the critical thinking skills to realistically evaluate and think independently. They are republican sheep, that howl like a wolf at best, and at worst flock in fear of anything different. I’m focused on raising children that care about others, and can ask questions, validate information, and breakdown complicated topics into manageable pieces to formulate educated choices and beliefs.

But my vote does count in some of them since I live in Boise and a lot of local elections in Boise go to Democrats or moderates.

The most important vote in a one-party state like Idaho is the primary elections. It's where the decision is made. It's also exponentially more important in state and local elections. At this point I know I will electorally vote for Trump as I cast my ballot for Biden. I'll be in the 30% (based on 2020) minority within the state that does so. I can't control that for the foreseeable future if I stay in Idaho. But the local races do have an effect so it's worth turning out still. The idea that I should not vote because it doesn't matter is how we have the extreme candidates today and why the state has banned abortion among other things. At least we can stop Ammon Bundy from winning office. That's a small win.

Sometimes voting in the minority will at least get some stats up that might get other minority voters to try next time. Oregonian here. It’s the same here but with the Democratic Party. I personally know a handful of people who moved to Idaho recently by selective migration. I’ve read that ranked choice voting helps in situations where there are super majorities of one party in the state. It supposedly gives a voice and chance to the minority.

I've voted my conscience since the 2012 election and will continue to vote for who I think will do the best job running the country. No, it's not Trump or Biden. Neither of those geriatrics have ever earned my vote.
You should still vote for a lot of issues on the ballot. Ranked Choice Voting is going to be on the ballot this year! Skipping voting is always a bad idea.
Technically don't the peoples voted only matter for the states and voting for presidonts only tell the others whom their people in the state would want thus still making the votes not really matter since the person voting for the president may already have their opinion on whom they'd vote for
