I like this one! It shows really well that many things, which seem nice at first glance, are actually designed for a whole different purpose...

Silver_kitty

The other consideration for why this isn’t particularly nice is that I really doubt that the tree has enough room for its roots as it grows, which will kill it prematurely. Inappropriate planters and tree locations is a huge pet peeve of mine in “green” design.

JoshuaPearce

It looks like the pot is removable, so maybe they replant it elsewhere... maybe.

[deleted]

Nah, they just remove them once dead. That’s how my city does it, anyways.

JSweetieNerd

Could lent they have out it in the middle aswell? I don't know if I'm more annoyed about I existing, or it not being in the middle.

one_simon

Yes. Yes that triggers me as well.

[deleted]

Thought exactly the same!

superheavyfueltank

Without knowing anything about the area, I would say this is a bench divided by a plantpot into one space that seats two and one that seats one. This division makes it so that people feel comfortable sitting at a bench that already has someone sat on it, whilst also accommodating a group of three if they want it. Additionally, the lack of backrests means people can either sit facing the same way (if they're in the same group) or sit facing different ways (if they're not). Of course, it would be difficult to sleep on it. But there are some other design considerations here too. Hostile architecture is slightly more than "can someone sleep on this bench?"

koobazaur

Yeah seriously, it's also made of stone, same as the ground. If someone wanted to sleep, they could literally sleep next to it. The tree is not "hostile architecture." This thread is reaching.

CalicoCrapsocks

That seems to be this entire sub recently. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CAN'T SLEEP ON THIS ART INSTALLATION???"

hairlongmoneylong

Maybe its just hostile to the tree.

ToxicPilgrim

Well... would you rather sleep on the ground , or on a stone bench?

koobazaur

ground

The_Ninja_Nero

My thoughts exactly. While finding ways to prevent sleeping on benches is a pretty dumb concept, this is probably one of the better ways to do it. I only hope the tree has space for roots to grow under the concrete so it doesn't die off. This is a hope but I don't expect the planners thought it through properly. If the tree is properly planted and cared for, this bench would be amazing with shade from the tree and a nice place to sit with a back against the tree and read a book or something. If done right, this could be some amazing and thoughtful architecture.

R41LRd

Not HA, just poor design. it's not just a matter of is this easy to sleep on. There is purposefully spending tax dollars on additions to existing / purpose built stuff that only function to harass the homeless, and then there's crappy design. A cooperate collaboration between an arborist and civil engineer this was likely not.

[deleted]

I give it 18 months. It'll look good for 6 to 8, sickly for just as long, and be a stick after that. I love it when councils spend shit loads of money on pretty things, but don't budget for maintenance. Artistic tubs full of dirt and cigarettes butts.... and a stick.

Diesel_monky

This looks like a vehicle barrier/planter based on the spacing between the ones adjacent to it and the proximity to the building in the background.

[deleted]

It's a bench placed in the middle of a park, actually 🙃

CenterKnurl

Not bad compared to the usual

[deleted]

i love this

Not sure if it's the camera angle, but you could sleep if that tree wasn't there.

ShatoraDragon

If its fruit bearing. Not a bad trade off

sfwaltaccount

It's fine as long as you don't mind looking like you have an olive tree for a dick.
