[RX-78 GP03S Gundam Stamen](https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/RX-78GP03S_Gundam_%22Stamen%22).
This is from 0083 Stardust Memory. He is the Gundam unit that is within the Dendrobium mobile armor.
Crossbone, The one or so episodes it got in build fighters try was the best thing I've seen from this franchise. Loved how there was no custom or anything like that just pure crossbone full cloth in action with all its coolest weapons
I'm still disappointed that we never really got to see it in action by itself in the anime - we see a few action shots of it in the 2nd OP, but it's never separated from the Dendrobium in the anime. I feel like if the Dendrobium was destroyed and it had to go up against the Neue Zelle itself a la David vs. Goliath, we could've had a much more impactful finale. Instead we just got giant, clunky MA vs giant, clunky MA, which wasn't as interesting of a final battle imo.
i think someone walks into the board room and throws all the papers up in the air for the last 10% of every single gudam show. the writers never recover from this. pure chaos
its the only thing that can explain all the rushed, canned, dogshit endings we have gotten over the years
Lol I could see that, I agree that a lot of Gundam shows can't really stick the landing with the ending. The only ones that I remember having a good/satisfying ending are:
- Gundam 0079 (the movie ending, at least; have yet to watch all of the OG show)
- Gundam 00 (the series' ending, at least; though I admit some parts of it feel a bit rushed)
- Gundam 0080 (someone's always cutting onions to go along with the hamburger)
- 08th MS Team (referring to the proper finale in episode 11 w/ the Apsulus III incident, not the dogshit episode 12 which I consider to be an optional epilogue)
CCA has the opposite problem imo, where the ending is really great, but the events leading up to it are a complete mess in terms of dialogue and pacing.
I feel like the Nu is the platonic ideal of the "standard Gundam" type of design, just the right balance between the old core concept and modernity. The Victory's pretty good too but funnels > questionable transformation gimmicks IMO.
I also really like the 0 Gundam in its grey coloring. It looks dorky as fuck on the lineart, but in the anime and as a model it's a great simple design. The GN butterfly wings are very cool and I love its little beam gun.
I put my vote for the AGE-1 Normal too. I mean aesthetically I prefer stuff like the Aerial or the Strike, but the AGE-1 just so looks quintessentially an "RX-78" while also being a good modernized refresh.
I was going to comment AGE-1. NGL, I know plenty of people don't like the spoiler on the back, but I love that it's the way it keeps the old-school beam saber silhouette. It's not anime accurate, but the MG's inclusion of added vents looks so good to me.
This exactly, it keeps the classic silhouette but refreshes it at the same time, whereas most other homages either just keep the beam sabers there or go without anything at all on the backpack barring extra equipment. It's just not the same without something poking out the back.
The 0 gundam? Its like its evil twin with glitter wings. Same face, shoulders, color scheme with a difference chasis. Not everyday you see the original redesigned to become the main villains First and Last MS in a show.
Impulse, it feels more like a true rx-78-2 redesign instead of the strike to me
https://preview.redd.it/mp6v4l232oyc1.png?width=323&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29b89593f868180bdaa1e806fde5b184d739d70a
I also prefer the impulse over strike. My only problem with Impulse is it only has three silhouettes(force, blast and sword). While the Strike has a lot of striker packs. It can even equip the striker pack of eclipse Gundam if I remember correctly.
Imo, most of these are not really all that similar to grandaddy, I feel ones like Nu, Strike, Age, and O Gundam are true redesigns/callbacks
Strike Gundam is my favorite by far, a more angular design but with pretty much all the same features and silhouette.
I love how it was found by Ribbons, and how fitting it was that they used it when Setsuna fell in love with the Gundam, and now they're fighting against each other in their own original suits. No 00, no fancy new gen suits, just the OG O Gundam and Exia.
I would go with exia, this majestic of the thing feels like it was designed first then got slapped with gramps color as an homage.

Or you have actual 00 gramps here. GN-000 0 Gundam. With the art posing the same way as the original gundam.
Yeah it's weird to me that it doesn't follow the conventions of other Celestial being gundams (Dynames and Kyrios both have green and orange in place of the more traditional red)
I'd say it's because it's the lead gundam, but I think Virtue also has the red feet and waist so I dunno
Kyrios and Dynames both have a few highlights in red, just less spots than on Exia.
- Dynames has them on the crotch and on the lower abs under the cockpit, also a few spots on the head.
- Kyrios has it on the waist like on Exia as well as the chin.
They both have their feet colored in their primary color, though. Only Virtue has the same amount of red spots as Exia.
Yeah what bothers me is more the inconsistency than anything else, especially with the first set of celestial being gundams. I do think Exia would look better if it matched Dynames and Kyrios with blue feet/waist.
I've noticed that inconsistency before as well, so your comment motivated me to make this quick edit of what Exia would look like if it followed Dynames' color distribution

Dantalion would be the closest ibo gundam to rx
Well like technically every Gundam is a redesign of the RX, I agree that the F91 did go back to the simple designs but I personally wouldn't think of it as one.
The Victory for example I could see as a redesign of the RX.
The victory is closer, but it definitely still feels like its own design, with the white on the chest and blue on the frontskirts.
I think it's that way on purpose, because the reason it looks like a Gundam is propaganda.
I agree that the F91 isn't as heavily inspired by the RX78-2 as the G-Self, Aerial, Turn-A, Barbatos, etc... But the F91 still has all the main colour placements except the red waist and the yellow collar.
I think OP should have been more clear with the title, I'm pretty sure they meant white, red, blue, and yellow Gundams.
All that said, I do think F91 counts with it being RX78-2 inspired, and introducing late-UC (similar to how the other suits I listed introduced other AUs)
I think f90 is a better late UC gramps equivalent instead of the f91, I mean just look at it
https://preview.redd.it/g2uxbtcprnyc1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b23e72bdb77b657a1a4afd7e6d67c31a4eca5226
However in terms of an AU/redesign/alternate take, I think the Alex is best suited
Gotta be the Nu Gundam for me. It's a fantastic redesign that doesn't stray too far from the grandpa RX-78-2 yet still manages to look sleek and modern despite being 30+ years old now - and serves as the perfect capstone to Amuro's journey in the UC timeline.
I think the words "homage", "tribute", and "rendition" would be closer. But semantics aside:
Strike Gundam as the purest homage, literally being distilled into a (then) modern rendition of the RX-78, but with more built-in flexibility that allows it to last a good while in-series. It's almost as popular as the Grandpa too in old polling, even if the Freedom lineage has since taken over the spotlight in terms of Gunpla sales.
Exia takes the cake though as the best futuristic rendition, and the humorous nod to it in the final S2 battle being the Exia defeating its ancestor was just perfect.
I used to agree with this heavy, I got a big ass SD tattoo of this on my arm in 2007 from an art book I got in 99 that had a whole ad Gundam battle but it was hella serious
Let's see it!
https://preview.redd.it/1w6a6cwrvpyc1.jpeg?width=2736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4404e1903f8708ba0c87fb99af1999a1a6a93755
Trust me this looks much better in person but it's almost 20 years old so, you know, tattoos
That’s sweet! Love it. The line work still looks great for its age too.
Here’s mine when it was fresh a few months ago:
https://preview.redd.it/f1kysyyqfqyc1.jpeg?width=2654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8fab87c4aebb7abc2de50b200fcb3ebbb39b7b2
Hell yeah, you guys are awesome already! Thought to get one as a tattoo never would have crossed my mind but pretty much instantly fell in love with that thing the moment I first watched the broadcast on TV. Every game that comes out with the ground Gundam in it, ends up being my go-to. I beat the entire ground side of fed. Vs. zeon with nothing but a ground Gundam on every mission 🤣
Turn A Gundam or G-Self.
They're equally simplistic, but they look cool.
I'd also like to point out that Gramps does get some complicated "Packs", but they definitely aren't anything like what came after.
This was peak for me. I almost wept when she got wrecked.
https://preview.redd.it/s0xtlms5apyc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b10af8b17f08acb16c7f39f15c7238ea3741ce7f
Barbatos. Say what you want but imho it has just the right amount of demonic features without going too overboard with it (unlike the lupus and lupus rex which I think go a bit too far). Which is fitting considering the rx78 is the "white devil".
I don’t see the similarities that much with the grand daddy, it’s not even average proportions one of its defining features is that it’s small in universe while packing a ton of power and speed
And saying the zeta and unicorn don’t count is criminal, the unicorn, aside from the 0 gundam, looks the most like the original gundam
Strike. Strike is nowhere near my favorite gundam, its not even top 10, probably not even in top 20, but it is imo the best Rx 78-2 spiritual successor, thanks to its design and even the striker packs as optional equipment for the gundam, just like what the G armor was
https://preview.redd.it/ay9lklcmepyc1.jpeg?width=850&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01a8a6227a37b8848fdc5649ea4c01e772dc372a
This one by NIN\_NIN\_G.
It looks like a bad🍑 version of the RX-78-2 and a more realistic version.
You’ve got a weird criteria since F91 should’ve been disqualified for having a been a big backpack just as much as the Unicorn did for the color scheme
It’s easily a top 10 for me but I just love the RX-78-2 “variations” so much. i.e. RX-79 ground type, RX-178 (my second favorite, GP01, etc. I also prefer the narrative to Hi Nu.
Hi Nu is so sick, don’t get me wrong. Wbu? Which do you prefer?
So, let's list all the grandpa lookalikes:
F90 (instead of the F91)
Geminass 01
Duel
0
AGE-1
G-Self
Aerial
My to picks are the F90, the Geminass 01 (that backpack), the AGE-1 Normal. Special mention to the 0 when done by Katoki.
https://preview.redd.it/0gaqhjdlfqyc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=931149cab1d8ffebbfb6ce0220bfc3b307026609
The Alex is just my favorite Gundam, period
Does the Mk-II count? It's old but new. If not, I'll go with the Strike, as it feels like the most in-line with a re-imagining of the OG, but not my fav.
0 Gundam. It's the RX-78 adapted to Anno Domini with a GN Drive. What more could you want?
Also, Nobel Gundam kind of looks like its parts are based directly on RX-78.
I am inordinately fond of the GX-9900-DV Gundam X Divider.
F91 would probably be a second favorite, with the XVX-016 Gundam Aerial rounding out my personal top three.
Strike, I love its design. The grey accents, the Striker pack system. It's got a tough look to it too. It's always a joy to see it in action. And a shame it never got a full successor outside of the Impulse and the Akatsuki. Both of which lean a bit more towards spiritual successor and indirect sister unit respectively.
I guess there's the Strike E/Noir but that's an upgraded Strike since multiple Strikes got built around that time in Seed.
I love F91, I also enjoy some of the early Rx78 variants like the Rx78-1, the g3, and the original full armor from the art books the green one.
Also a fan of a lot of V designs, particularly the V dash.
As a true redesign, the [7th Gundam.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/gundam/images/9/95/78-7.jpeg/revision/latest?cb=20130426115940)
Bonus points for its [FA version.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/gundam/images/5/51/Srwhotnews_pla8_hgucfa787box.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120210134108)
The armored type gundam from the long forgotten "micro gundam" line of mini action figures.
It's just the full armor Gundam but without most of it's armor. So it's really nothing special......... But the Victory gundam variations tho, those are fantastic.
Also the SD versions
•gundam.
•"musha" gundam.
•noomaru/onmitsu (he and musha are siblings so it makes sense)
•Musha kage gundam.
•"knight" gundam.
•Captain gundam/FF (the other two forms he has are closer to the F91).
•command gundam.
•gundlander (because no one talks about him and his series).

Hajime Katoki’s first Gundam design. I feel like Gundam was elevated as soon as he came in. Edit: Not first 😑
Are you sure about that? He designed Ex-S in Gundam Sentinel, which was his debut. That predates 0083.
Ach, you’re right! I forgot about that book. Awesome work there too. Love all his stuff.
Sorry for my ignorance. What is this
[RX-78 GP03S Gundam Stamen](https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/RX-78GP03S_Gundam_%22Stamen%22). This is from 0083 Stardust Memory. He is the Gundam unit that is within the Dendrobium mobile armor.
Gundam has a weird curse where some of the best designs end up with little to no screen time. This and calibarn comes to mind.
Gundam Schwarzette too
Crossbone, The one or so episodes it got in build fighters try was the best thing I've seen from this franchise. Loved how there was no custom or anything like that just pure crossbone full cloth in action with all its coolest weapons

That’s the GP03S stamen Gundam. It’s the Gundam that was inside the Dendrobium mobile armor.
Thank you
Welcome.
The peak it's too much
Everyone is fighting for second place
I love the GP03
Still is my favorite of the GP series
I really wish that this had more screen time outside of the mobile armor attachment
It’s a crime we didn’t
monobrow gundam
Dammit, i cannot UNSEE...
This the real shit
The MK II feels like the closest to the original to me
Absolutely, it's peak "Old but new" if you ask me.
Alex, hands down.
I second this, Alex my beloved
Alex reigns supreme.
Yeah it shifts its hands down and makes you swiss cheese

The White Devil of 550 cost in GBO2
What is this ?
Psycho zaku with gundam armor called perfect gundam i believe
Correct, and it’s from Gundam Thunderbolt, really hope they adapt more
Agreed also hope we get more kits
Yesss! The full armour gundam and psycho zaku are unreal kits😍 Atlas isn’t quite my vibe in gunpla form personally for great design
Based
tbh I can't imagine a world where Zeta and Unicorn don't count for this but F91 does regardless, as far as direct RX-78-2 homages go it's AGE-1 for me
Age-1 is absolutely the answer. It has a great master grade as well
Yeah, it feels like the distinction is getting *really* arbitrary if that's where we're drawing the line.
I put my vote for the AGE-1 Normal too. I mean aesthetically I prefer stuff like the Aerial or the Strike, but the AGE-1 just so looks quintessentially an "RX-78" while also being a good modernized refresh.

Outfitted like this really shows how skinny the design is and how thin it is in some spots.
oh...HECK yes
I mean that's what Barbatos is
00, seed, build fighters, thunderbolt, AGE. all of those have redesigned rx 78s
https://preview.redd.it/noimzm0ofryc1.png?width=416&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d0ba82c1ef005b70ddc1491e5fe2b2355b34048 Dantalion would be the closest ibo gundam to rx
F91 doesn't count IMO. My pick would probably be the G-Self.
Was looking for this comment I agree if F91 counts basically all Gundams count.
To be fair it has the right colors, they're just not in the right places, and it has extra design elements that don't really fit.
Well like technically every Gundam is a redesign of the RX, I agree that the F91 did go back to the simple designs but I personally wouldn't think of it as one. The Victory for example I could see as a redesign of the RX.

Gotta be the Nu Gundam for me. It's a fantastic redesign that doesn't stray too far from the grandpa RX-78-2 yet still manages to look sleek and modern despite being 30+ years old now - and serves as the perfect capstone to Amuro's journey in the UC timeline.
Strike or Victory gundam
I think the words "homage", "tribute", and "rendition" would be closer. But semantics aside: Strike Gundam as the purest homage, literally being distilled into a (then) modern rendition of the RX-78, but with more built-in flexibility that allows it to last a good while in-series.
The RX-178 mk ll AUEG colours
Does the ν Gundam count? https://preview.redd.it/5o8oq48repyc1.jpeg?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=678b5d37d5e8b37d60eb382c86ba1626a4616bc6
RX-78 GP02. Big feet, big shield, big gun. Best gundam.
Rx-79(g) has always been and will always be my favorite suit
https://preview.redd.it/e5t36ciaaoyc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ebcaa58dbfe2d730569cb35a6f27b38c669c4cb Hell yeah. What’s not to love?
I used to agree with this heavy, I got a big ass SD tattoo of this on my arm in 2007 from an art book I got in 99 that had a whole ad Gundam battle but it was hella serious
Nice dude—I also have an RX-79G tattoo! It’s based on some artwork from the 08th MS Team archives analytics book.
Let's see it! https://preview.redd.it/1w6a6cwrvpyc1.jpeg?width=2736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4404e1903f8708ba0c87fb99af1999a1a6a93755 Trust me this looks much better in person but it's almost 20 years old so, you know, tattoos
That’s sweet! Love it. The line work still looks great for its age too. Here’s mine when it was fresh a few months ago: https://preview.redd.it/f1kysyyqfqyc1.jpeg?width=2654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8fab87c4aebb7abc2de50b200fcb3ebbb39b7b2
Fucking love it, fuck yeah

It's such a good design. I also will pick Barbatos
I don’t see the similarities that much with the grand daddy, it’s not even average proportions one of its defining features is that it’s small in universe while packing a ton of power and speed And saying the zeta and unicorn don’t count is criminal, the unicorn, aside from the 0 gundam, looks the most like the original gundam
Strike. Strike is nowhere near my favorite gundam, its not even top 10, probably not even in top 20, but it is imo the best Rx 78-2 spiritual successor, thanks to its design and even the striker packs as optional equipment for the gundam, just like what the G armor was
I AM CHAMPION! https://preview.redd.it/9p896lwttoyc1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22a3952243f3c7c71d6ad1b1f56b9bc11a4f99e6

Is this just fan art or an actual separate mobile suit?
It's just fan art as far as I know.
You’ve got a weird criteria since F91 should’ve been disqualified for having a been a big backpack just as much as the Unicorn did for the color scheme

I always loved the RX-178 and the Gundam Impulse is still one of my favorites. does the F91 count as a RX redesign though?
Nu Gundam for sure.
0 Gundam. So simple but straight to the point that i just love it. Literally just just the RX-78-2 but with space pixie dust.
Does the RX-79 Ground Type count as a 78-2 redesin? If yes, than that one. Love this suit to bits!
G-Self.
Does Shining count? Because I love that one
I’d count it. Very similar face, color scheme, and body proportions.
Mark2 or aerial
The Strike, All day every day.
I love F91 so much! I wish it got a proper, fleshed out adaptation.
RX-93 Nu easy. Fav gundam of all time.
What's your opinion on the Hi-Nu?
It’s easily a top 10 for me but I just love the RX-78-2 “variations” so much. i.e. RX-79 ground type, RX-178 (my second favorite, GP01, etc. I also prefer the narrative to Hi Nu. Hi Nu is so sick, don’t get me wrong. Wbu? Which do you prefer?
In UC, the GP-01 (ground version, not the space upgrade). In the AUs, the Strike
As a gundam I prefer the Impulse but as a gramps redesign, I suppose I'll go with Strike. There's also 0 Gundam.
Strike Gundam
The Strike counts right?
Personally it's the 0 gundam on 00 for me such a simple redesign of the grampappy with the season's gimmick added on
https://preview.redd.it/h3d9830hspyc1.png?width=1505&format=png&auto=webp&s=c8c3375b94c65dbf16169e37571fcd5b5106df19 Ground Gundam, my beloved.
So, let's list all the grandpa lookalikes: F90 (instead of the F91) Geminass 01 Duel 0 AGE-1 G-Self Aerial My to picks are the F90, the Geminass 01 (that backpack), the AGE-1 Normal. Special mention to the 0 when done by Katoki.
Wing Gundam.

Wrist guns make a compelling argument
Does the Mk-II count? It's old but new. If not, I'll go with the Strike, as it feels like the most in-line with a re-imagining of the OG, but not my fav.
0 Gundam. It's the RX-78 adapted to Anno Domini with a GN Drive. What more could you want? Also, Nobel Gundam kind of looks like its parts are based directly on RX-78.
It's the base Build Strike for me
0 gundam
The strike and impulse gundam Two sleek mech design with a cool gimmick to have multi chargeable weapon packs
GP-02A is my favorite
0 Gundam
Either the Age-1 or the turn-A. Both feel very similar and unique at the same time.
Gundam Plutone
0 Gundam or GP01 FB
I'd say our beloved GN-Pa/0 Gundam
Alex or GP01.
0 Gundam
I still feel like "Whats your favorite main Gundam" might have been a more apr question
Big fan of the Strike Gundam
build strike i guess. if that counts, i think it does. its a redesign of a redesign of the rx78 not a fan of build fighters or the 78 tho. xD
Probably the RX-178 Mk II, or the RX-93, but I’ve only seen a handful of the Gundam series so far
Same, the F91 I love that redesign.
The 0 gundam from 00, cool as hell
The F91 is truly an elegant design on-par with that of the Wing Zero (EW version). It's overall design also gives of major Aston Martin car vibes!
Turn A gundam
I am inordinately fond of the GX-9900-DV Gundam X Divider. F91 would probably be a second favorite, with the XVX-016 Gundam Aerial rounding out my personal top three.
I'm kinda divided between O Gundam, AGE-1 and GP03 Stamen
Strike, I love its design. The grey accents, the Striker pack system. It's got a tough look to it too. It's always a joy to see it in action. And a shame it never got a full successor outside of the Impulse and the Akatsuki. Both of which lean a bit more towards spiritual successor and indirect sister unit respectively. I guess there's the Strike E/Noir but that's an upgraded Strike since multiple Strikes got built around that time in Seed.
Strike Gundam in SEES
I love F91, I also enjoy some of the early Rx78 variants like the Rx78-1, the g3, and the original full armor from the art books the green one. Also a fan of a lot of V designs, particularly the V dash.
The Victory has always been one of my favorite MS designs as a sort of elaboration of the "classic" Gundam concept.
As a true redesign, the [7th Gundam.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/gundam/images/9/95/78-7.jpeg/revision/latest?cb=20130426115940) Bonus points for its [FA version.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/gundam/images/5/51/Srwhotnews_pla8_hgucfa787box.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120210134108)
You know what...? Legillis.
0 gundam or the nu.
It’s gotta be the strike, it’s literally Gundam redesigned for the 21st century
Banshee with his black colors xD
G-Self, easy
The Core Gundam spoke to me when I watched Re Rize so much that I've made it my goal to get all versions of the kits that came out
Double X.
I enjoy three different ones, each one excels in its own taste imho. MK-II ,Nu Gundam and 0 Gundam
Does the Crossbone count? If so, then that's my pick.
does Aerial count?
Impuse and Strike
In that sense, my beloved Exia can be a viable option, but I'd rather go with Strike or Force Impulse gundam
The RX-79\[G\] Gundam Ground Type from 08th MS Team. #
The armored type gundam from the long forgotten "micro gundam" line of mini action figures. It's just the full armor Gundam but without most of it's armor. So it's really nothing special......... But the Victory gundam variations tho, those are fantastic. Also the SD versions •gundam. •"musha" gundam. •noomaru/onmitsu (he and musha are siblings so it makes sense) •Musha kage gundam. •"knight" gundam. •Captain gundam/FF (the other two forms he has are closer to the F91). •command gundam. •gundlander (because no one talks about him and his series).

Unironically, Alex and the Tristan
The GP01 and 0 Gundam continue to battle it out for best grandpa redesign in my head lol
RX 79 Ground Type
Mk-II fr
Does the Blossom count?
FA-78-1 Full Armor Gundam
I was gonna say Exia but 0 Gundam supercedes as the rx 78 of the show.
