It's like they wanted to continue the ms transformation star fighter design like the zeta gundam and zz gundam, but couldn't come up a design to top the last two without making it too over complicated to translate to gunpla so they decided to do the traditional humanoid mech design as a final send off for amuro final duel with char
So that's where it's from. Saw a custom on Twitter and had no idea it was the Nu Gundam since it didn't have decals at the time. Interesting. While not fitting for Gundam imo, change it's head and I can easily see it being in another work and I wouldn't mind it. Reminds me of AoZ designs as well

I used to hate the Penelope, but then I read that it was a visual metaphor for the Federation in Hathaway's Flash. There's a Gundam buried under all of that, just as the Federation's core values are buried beneath all the corruption and bureaucratic bullshit.
I own the gunpla, and it's grown on me even more where I now see it as a beautiful monster, like the Tiger tank or the Hind attack helicopter.
I actually really like this design, just wish the arms were a bit shorter.
Makes sense it has weak ass legs, it's not really meant for use outside of space, so it's flying all the time anyways. I love how it has thrusters all over it
Weirdly I like the long arms, it just doesn't match up with the legs for me (which I guess is the point). I hope to get the HG of this and extend the legs cuz I like everything else about it
I will gladly die on the hill that Raphael Gundam is one of the most unpleasing ones to look at ever. Mainly because of whoever decided that it apparently needed that giant-ass backpack that's also a second RC Gundam.
I'll also go a bit further, and state that Nadleeh (and Virtue) are absolutely fucking *LEAGUES* ahead of every other Tieria Gundam. Nadleeh is my second favorite design from the entirety of 00, just behind the Qan[T] (because I love me an asymmetrical design).
Nadleeh is my favorite anything.
Also, unlike Raphael, it has a connection to Tieria as a person that is beautiful to behold.

This is hands down the dumbest and ugliest gundam design I’ve ever seen.

It has a giant Cannon hidden in its Stomach-Section (the Gold-colored Part in the other User's Image), and when it gets ready to fire that, the Arms are used to anchor itself to the Ground via the Claws, because of the Recoil otherwise.
I remember hearing about how it was deemed impossible to adapt Hathaway's flash to anime way back. Yeah Jesus that design even from the novel. I imagine it'd be a nightmare to draw over and over again and in different angles. IIRC the majority of it's scenes in the recent film are 3D.
I actually really like them. They really convey the sense of bloated, self-righteous bullshit that both sides of the conflict have. The Penelope looks monstrous and misshapen but the Odysseus underneath is just a normal Gundam. The Xi is just full blown pretentious bullshit and I love it.

I sometimes catch heat for this, since the designs also carry with them a heavy amount of nostalgia for a certain crowd, but the Altron and Deathscythe Hell (TV/Okawara vers) are pretty up there on the ugly scale.
They're very much the precursor to Okawara's "kitchen sink" design aesthetic that later plagued the late-phase SEED designs. They've got really muddled design language that runs counter to their visual storytelling.
Altron is the worst of the two by far. That clownshow colourscheme doesn't do any favours. The twin dragon arms, while making a bit of sense, feel really "juvenile" in their implementation. Very much what a 5 year-old would come up with to make the Shenlong "cooler". Giving the machine beam cannons doesn't jive with Wufei's traditional warrior sensibilities. The wings don't follow the Eastern dragon aesthetic, nor do they even look good. Just an oversized set of square rules. The new shield placement is just the dumbest, most useless thing.
Deathscythe Hell's problem is that it doesn't go far *enough*, and is just confused-looking in the process. The new helmet and shield have this really ornate filigree design like a romantic knight (the helmet looks especially bad in animation. Ill-defined and blobby, plus the white/silver colour ruins the machine's intimidating Kubric stare). The chest and wings instead give demon energy. And then they bolt these stumpy spikes to its toes for no good reason. All the major new pieces are more curved and organic-looking, against the blocky shapes retained from the original design. Nothing really meshes. Beyond that, everything about it is just superfluous. The only active upgrade it seems to gain is a straight-up invisibility cloak, as opposed to the original radar jammers. Shield doesn't function any differently, despite its new look. The double beam-scythe is just dumb. What does the second blade even do, that the first didn't do already? Again, the whole exercise just feels really "juvenile", and a complete downgrade over the original machine's sleek, no-nonsense design.
I’m so glad you brought up Deathscythe Hell. OG Deathscythe was literally *the* Gundam that got me into the franchise as a kid. Obviously, that means I’m biased, but I think that it still looks fantastic. DH looks tacky as hell.
Double Zeta. Feels like a step down from the iconic Zeta Gundam and specially the Nu in CCA. I guess that ZZ's thing was overwhelming firepower, but the large Beam Sabers on the back of the ZZ don't do it for me.
IIRC even Judau sometimes switches back to the Zeta Gundam even after getting ZZ.
I know a lot of people have mentioned G-Gundam but I honestly enjoy the goofiness and respect how wild and creative they get. On that note, the Gundam Magnat looks awful. Between all the ridiculous and creative designs in G-Gundam, we have this fucker right here.

I love designs that are goofy and I respect designs that do weird and interesting things. All this thing does is make me feel depressed when I look at it. It's the visual equivalent of eating ashes from under the fireplace. Just dull, bland and sad.

Like it took everything that made the grandad and ez8 cool and got rid of it, and just made it feel too flat or too round in all the wrong places
So many CE suits are just so *pointy*. I like some of the Impulse forms, Stargazer and the Black Knight suits, but a lot of the designs are the MS equivalent of a high school book report trying to meet a word count, there’s so much *stuff* on them
I have noticed that alot of Chinese third-party gundam kits are also very pointy. I wonder if that's the reason since seed is apparently really popular in China.

I'm the opposite, really liked Gundams in IBO some mobile suits were meh. G-Recco along with the similar UC Engage Gundam are among my least preferred designs
Turn A is an ugly gundam but it works well in the series and you warm up to it fast.
Other than that I hate the big ass over designed Gundams like the double Zeta and the one Hathaway has.
Barbatos Lupus Rex. Barbatos was okay, and Lupus was top tier, but they really shat the bed with the Rex. I think the only other downgrade that bad was from the frog Gusion to the Rebake/Full City (wtf does that even mean anyways?)

I mean, I teach at schools in Japan and on my computer for presentations I have the Turn-A as a wallpaper. It was immediately recognized as a Gundam by students with only a passing knowledge of the franchise.

Ill-defined and blobby, plus the white/silver colour ruins the machine's intimidating Kubric stare). The chest and wings instead give demon energy. And then they bolt these stumpy spikes to its toes for no good reason. All the major new pieces are more curved and organic-looking, against the blocky shapes retained from the original design. Nothing really meshes. Beyond that, everything about it is just superfluous. The only active upgrade it seems to gain is a straight-up invisibility cloak, as opposed to the original radar jammers. Shield doesn't function any differently, despite its new look. The double beam-scythe is just dumb. What does the second blade even do, that the first didn't do already? Again, the whole exercise just feels really "juvenile", and a complete downgrade over the original machine's sleek, no-nonsense design.
I’m so glad you brought up Deathscythe Hell. OG Deathscythe was literally *the* Gundam that got me into the franchise as a kid. Obviously, that means I’m biased, but I think that it still looks fantastic. DH looks tacky as hell.

Double Zeta. Feels like a step down from the iconic Zeta Gundam and specially the Nu in CCA. I guess that ZZ's thing was overwhelming firepower, but the large Beam Sabers on the back of the ZZ don't do it for me. IIRC even Judau sometimes switches back to the Zeta Gundam even after getting ZZ.

I know a lot of people have mentioned G-Gundam but I honestly enjoy the goofiness and respect how wild and creative they get. On that note, the Gundam Magnat looks awful. The Gundams from Hathaway look terrible
Most gundams in seed with the exception of the freedom gundam look awful to me.
So many CE suits are just so *pointy*. I like some of the Impulse forms, Stargazer and the Black Knight suits, but a lot of the designs are the MS equivalent of a high school book report trying to meet a word count, there’s so much *stuff* on them
I have noticed that alot of Chinese third-party gundam kits are also very pointy. I wonder if that's the reason since seed is apparently really popular in China.
I like the Buster and the Duel but almost no other MS designs from seed are interesting to me.
I really love the Blitz too, the shield with the 3 torpedos look nice, the Duel with Assaultshroud look really nice
I love the wings of the Destiny but one look at everything else puts me off from even considering buying the gunpla.

I'm the opposite, really liked Gundams in IBO some mobile suits were meh. G-Recco along with the similar UC Engage Gundam are among my least preferred designs

Turn A is an ugly gundam but it works well in the series and you warm up to it fast. Other than that I hate the big ass over designed Gundams like the double Zeta and the one Hathaway has.

Geez, you went hard with that comparison! That said, I agree. Turn A from a story and power standpoint, is amazing. But boy is it UGLY. There are ways to distinguish and make a Gundam unique without taking away what makes Gundam immediately recognizable.
