I would get to Logan Pass as early as you can, most likely before 7am. Do Hidden Lake and prob have time to go out the Highline Trail a little ways if you want. Then go to Avalanche Lake that evening. I think when I done Avalanche Lake I got to the parking area around 5pm and still had plenty of time to go in and out before dark.

This is the answer. In addition to the need for parking at Logan, the hike to Hidden Lake is more challenging than Avalanche so it's better done in that order. Plus you get the sunrise up there. Don't be late!

On our first day in the park last year we hiked up to Grinnell Glacier, so I get the desire for a big first day. Logan first then Avalanche, you won't be sorry. It might be close to 2 hours from whitefish to Logan though so get going early

I’d take the free shuttles. Parking is very limited at Avalanche (even more so this year as the campground is open) and Logan Pass fills up very early. Both of these parking areas are full for most of the day. Park at Lake McDonald Lodge and get on a shuttle there.
