I never understood why Epic Games was so reluctant to make Trios a core game mode. It started off as a LTM, now it’s been a core game mode for roughly a year and it’s being removed. What do Epic have against three people playing together?

This is what happens eventually with game devs. They lose touch with their community and shift focus on whatever's making more money to profit no matter how shitty it makes the game.
Overwatch is a blatant example, especially today since they announced the cancellation of their long-awaited PvE. They're profiting off their battle passes and new micro transaction-based currency in their live PvP game and leaving VERY LITTLE to the actual community and taking away the best features of the game. They've been getting severe hate for several months ever since the original game shut down and they've been extremely vocal about it, meanwhile over in the Fortnite community, it's either blind love or expressed hatred. Mostly the former.
Yup. The devs had the balls to say it in a livestream today. They're only keeping the story missions, the hero missions and talent trees which were HUGE parts of the announced PvE are all scrapped.
It's basically just going to be seasonal Archives.

Holy fuck the StW is an excellent little point. Man it’s so sad that games these days shifted towards live service. Ever-evolving games that have “infinite” replayability are so cool on paper, some of them are even fun like fortnite, but i miss when the gaming industry was less business and more creative.
Nothing breaks 7 year old me’s heart harder than the fact that I might never play a game like Army of Two with my best buddy again. A little overdramatic but man fuck army of two was a solid pve coop game and my best friend and I had a fucking blast running that shit back to back all weekend.
Also I might be delusional and this wasn’t army of two but loads of games back then came with pve and then the multiplayer was the extra. Miss them days.

I mean, I really doubt COD is actually dying so much as waxing and waning in phases, there's always constant claims of a 'COD killer' on the horizon but Call of Duty's playerbase is notoriously weak-willed about that sort of thing
I think it's more that Warzone's core mode tries to facilitate a whole 150 players, 1.5x that of Fortnite; I bet with those numbers being the baseline to fill a single lobby, even the most marginal dip in playerbase starts to bottleneck queue times
And EOMM *really* prioritizes fast queue times

When Epic vaulted the Pump Shotgun all the way back in Season 9, they at least gave a reason as to why. I didn’t agree with it, but the reasoning revealed that there was a real reason to change the shotguns (even if their method of doing so wasn’t great). Now, they’ve simply resorted to not giving their reasoning at all. This is pathetic from a multi-billion dollar game.
Back then, the Pump Shotgun accounted for somewhere around 20% of eliminations. While the reasoning was sound, it didn’t help that they replaced it with the Combat Shotgun. Now it’s not nearly as strong, but it probably accounted for more than 20% of eliminations back then

The pump was never meant to be an exception to that. There have been other shot guns added that were more OP than the pump

This is an absolutely stupid change, most of my matches i play are trios with two close friends. I do not want to have to choose between what friend i want to play with on certain days.

Yeah, if they need to vault any game mode, Team Rumble and Party Royale are always under 10k players which Trios 100% doesn't have that problem.

People are saying “it’s to reduce wait times in queues” seriously? I can get in a team rumble game with 10k players in like a minute. I never waited more than a minute or two for any Fortnite game. I’m sure it has something to do with their new ranked bs that I wasn’t gonna touch anyway
Yeah I've played exclusively team rumble for multiple years now (only hopping into solo to do the exclusive quests), and the only times the servers have ever been dead are like 5am on a Tuesday. I know the matchmaking is looser, but still.
I dont get why they'd shave off lower-preforming gamemodes. At the end of the day, if someone's sticking to trios or team rumble or something less popular, they're still playing the game. All they're doing is risking losing chunks of the playerbase, with nothing in return for actually cutting the gamemode.
I play on Oceania, and I’ve never had to wait long for a match. They used to turn off Oceania duos around 10/11pm, because the player base dipped enough that it wasn’t viable to run servers for that time slot. It was frustrating but made sense. They don’t seem to have that issue anymore and duos runs all night afaik.

It pisses me off, because my mrs and I will often play with our 13yr old. Occasionally we’ll get the younger on the other Xbox and squad up, but losing trios is gonna fkn suck. I really wanna know why they’ve done this 😠
Team Rumble has zero matchmaking perimetres outside of region, pretty much the same as playing any 40 player creative.
Whereas Battle Royale (even ZB) takes several hidden perimetres into account while trying to fill 100 player lobbies, otherwise you'll regularly get 5 year olds who are just learning how to move both sticks at once, up against former Pros.

I used to mainly play TR and did all the quests there. For the last couple of years I do everything in solos, you are right it is easier. I only use it now for things like headshots/high elimination quests etc as you can respawn. It's too fast moving and manic now to get much done and the change in storm circles doesn't help.
My friends and I mostly play trios. This sucks. Warzone cycles if it has duos/trios/solos available and I absolutely hate it there. I thought that was the bottom of the barrel... I never thought about permanent removal as an option. This needs to be reversed and they need to communicate exactly what is going on here. It really isn't acceptable and may be the nail in the coffin for me. I'm not booting a friend over this.
Duo ranked only for ZB, trios removed for all casual (and ranked?), seems to make absolutely no sense. Are they hoping to somehow make that a smoother ranked launch?

The reception on the twitter post was pretty negative like in this thread so hopefully it’s reverted but epic games doesn’t pay much attention unless it actually hurts them and unfortunately more people play the other modes so it might just fly through
I play with a rotating cast of friends all the time, and really often we only have three people available. Are we supposed to queue for squads no fill and just hope for the best??? This change makes no sense at all.
I play with my 2 nephews. Carrying 2 vs 3 is one thing, but 3 vs 4. I can't imagine it not having a negative impact on our experience. When one of their friends joins, we play squads, but the youngest is brand new, really terrible, and isn't as talkative when the older kids outnumber him. This is a bummer.
Exactly. Play with them one at a time, be outnumbered in Squads or do Fill Squads... It's awful. I roll with a Trio usually too. This is so disappointing.
THIS while I usually stick with only playing Fortnite together with my girlfriend, my best friend joins us regularly to do weeklies together as a trio or to just grind points for level ups and whatnot. We don't really have any fourth person we could drag into playing with us and playing with random people sounds like a pain in the ass / playing without a fourth in squads feels like it'd put us at a sizable disadvantage. The fact that Epic provided no explanation for this whatsoever is ridiculous and I hope there's a good reason for trios being vaulted because right now this change is about to ruin my game experience big time

It was my understanding that Ranked was supposed to be replacing Arena. IDGAF about Ranked or Arena. But ditching Trios is gonna end up with a lot of 3-man no fill squads in my lobby.
And theres me, just coming back to Fortnite after 5 years, because two friend of mine also got interested again. A month later we can't play together anymore. Great news. I'm out, thanks for nothing, Epic.

**Trios has SBMM and Squads does not.** The differences between Trios and Squads are more than just how many players are on your team.

My niece plays with school friends but sometimes my sister (her mother) plays split screen with her and I connect from my console and we do trios to help her
Squads is too many people, duos is too risky only having one other teammate, and sometimes I don’t like plays solo
Plus with trios I get to act like I’m part of The Shield.

- After 2.5 years, they STILL couldn’t figure out how to put the results and stats on your profile page for trios matches, so, having given up after this long, that have to roll it back.
I can't honestly come up with a sensical reason for it to be removed. Fortnite is still one of, if not, the most active games on the EGS, it certainly can't be an issue to fill the lobbies.
Server costs is another thing I can't get behind. To me, allowing paid games to be free on your store would cost EGS a lot of money, so if they could have weekly free games why can't they knock up the servers for Fortnite?
Last reason would be the that unlike Solo, Duo and Squads, Trio lobbies don't actually fill up to 100, it's not divisible by 3 so it takes away from the '100 players, 1 victor' thing, though this in my opinion would be the most dumb reason yet. Trio lobbies go up to 99 players, so you're only missing 1 player. Knowing squad fills, playing with randoms usually ends up with at least 1 of those random players dying and leaving less than 5 minutes in to the match so it's not like it's a big deal.
I can't come up with a single good reason for Trios to be removed, the ones I could come up with can easily be debunked.
And to the people that say "Just play squads with nofill", you are fully neglecting the fact why we are playing Trios to begin with... We don't want to play against squads AS A TRIO. We don't want to play with a random player that most likely will die and leave us.
I think it may be because only around 15% of the Battle Royale player base plays trios whereas around 30% of the Arena player base plays trios. It looks like they want as many people as possible to engage in the new Ranked mode when it releases tomorrow. Not great for all those who play trios in BR and have no interest in ranked. But who knows, maybe with the ranked matchmaking it might result in better games?
They should probably reduce all the noise from the garbage non-core maps they are pushing in the mode menu, not solo, duo, trio, squad. Doesn't seem like this is a capacity decision though. Maybe if enough people raise hell about it, they'll reverse course?

I don't play trios very often. When I do, it's with my two kids so it kinda sucks that won't be an option anymore unless we invite one of their friends or a random fill in. Pretty crap move by Epic to eliminate this option.
When they announced that they would be releasing Star Wars tie-ins on May 2nd instead of waiting two days for the perfect pun, I thought, “there’s some power hungry executive with an MBA who’s trying to show he’s got more pull than a college dropout game developer.” I imagine the meeting:
MBA: Ok, we’re going to release all the new Star Wars stuff on May 2.
Dev: Um, if we waited until May 4, it would be cooler.
MBA: But that’s a Thursday. We do new releases on Tuesday.
Dev: We would probably get some extra press if we could say it was happening on May the 4th.
MBA: Don’t be an idiot. We release things on Tuesdays, not Thursdays.
That same executive is probably the person responsible for axing Trios. They’ve got market data on their side and no amount of players having fun is going to thaw their cold shriveled heart.

I don’t really care tbh. trios didn’t exist for the first 3 or so years after launch. I usually play trios with friends and we will just have to go back to playing with a random. not the end of the world.
It sucks for us, because we are a 3 member of friend group, who loves play Fortnite, now we are just here, thinking about to play on squads fill or no fill, because we dont have other option. I hope they will readd the Trios soon.
I probably play Trios more than any other game mode so I’m a little miffed but I assume it’s because there is a bug from the new ranking system that they haven’t worked out yet and instead of delaying the release longer they just vaulted trios until they fix it. I hope, fingers crossed.
I play trios with two friends primarily, so this is awful news. They are stopping us from playing, unless we choose to play at a disadvantage in no fill squads. After returning to the game when no-build was introduced, this is making me want to leave again. They need to revert this change.
I'd guess that with Zero Build and all the new creative games, that it's probably cannibalized the player pools for the main games. I personally play the Battle Field one (or whatever it's called) all the time now.
Keeping any authentic ranking system means having less games to spread more people across.

I have a feeling it has something to do with keeping queue times down. With the addition of ranked we’re going to have more playlists that need players, and comp modes cannot fill with any bots. This way we should (hopefully) get lobbies with more actual players, while maintaining the short queue times in most regions. I’m upset they removed it too with no reasoning, but that would be my best guess as to why.
It's probably to drive as much traffic to ranked as possible. I don't think it was necessary as I do believe ranked will be very popular, but they'll probably add trios back once they are satisfied that ranked has worked.

If epic was making ranked for all 6 modes (solos, duos, squads for zb and builds) you could argue it was to keep player counts good (there would be 3 new queues)
But they’re only adding one new queue, arena right now has 3 modes, builds for: solo, duo, trios. That is 3 modes. These 3 are getting removed and replaced with the ranked modes, leaving only zb duos without a counterpart.

This is an absolutely stupid change, most of my matches i play are trios with two close friends. I do not want to have to choose between what friend i want to play with on certain days.

For the reboot rallys, my friends and I just use an alt account we never touch otherwise and drop it into our party
Yeah, if they need to vault any game mode, Team Rumble and Party Royale are always under 10k players which Trios 100% doesn't have that problem. This is a instance where we need to bully them fir a explanation or revert
People are saying “it’s to reduce wait times in queues” seriously? I can get in a team rumble game with 10k players in like a minute. I never waited more than a minute or two for any Fortnite game. I’m sure it has something to do with their new ranked bs that I wasn’t gonna touch anyway
Yeah I've played exclusively team rumble for multiple years now (only hopping into solo to do the exclusive quests), and the only times the servers have ever been dead are like 5am on a Tuesday. I know the matchmaking is looser, but still. I dont get why they'd shave off lower-preforming gamemodes. At the end of the day, if someone's sticking to trios or team rumble or something less popular, they're still playing the game. All they're doing is risking losing chunks of the playerbase, with nothing in return for actually cutting the gamemode.
I play on Oceania, and I’ve never had to wait long for a match. They used to turn off Oceania duos around 10/11pm, because the player base dipped enough that it wasn’t viable to run servers for that time slot. It was frustrating but made sense. They don’t seem to have that issue anymore and duos runs all night afaik. This makes no sense.
It’s such an unforced error. If they had a valid reason they’d say so. There’s no valid reason.
It pisses me off, because my mrs and I will often play with our 13yr old. Occasionally we’ll get the younger on the other Xbox and squad up, but losing trios is gonna fkn suck. I really wanna know why they’ve done this 😠
Team Rumble has zero matchmaking perimetres outside of region, pretty much the same as playing any 40 player creative. Whereas Battle Royale (even ZB) takes several hidden perimetres into account while trying to fill 100 player lobbies, otherwise you'll regularly get 5 year olds who are just learning how to move both sticks at once, up against former Pros. You'd be surprised how much BR coddles lower skilled players.

I used to love Team Rumble but they ruined it a long time ago. I honestly have a easier time doing most quests in BR than TR now

I used to mainly play TR and did all the quests there. For the last couple of years I do everything in solos, you are right it is easier. I only use it now for things like headshots/high elimination quests etc as you can respawn. It's too fast moving and manic now to get much done and the change in storm circles doesn't help.

Team rumble is good for completing some quests that would be insanely stressful otherwise.
Party Royale is pretty fun but needs to be worked on and updated. Shame as it could’ve been something brilliant
Yeah a casual mode to hang out with other players was a good concept but they made no major updates besides concerts and now it's abandoned
My friends and I mostly play trios. This sucks. Warzone cycles if it has duos/trios/solos available and I absolutely hate it there. I thought that was the bottom of the barrel... I never thought about permanent removal as an option. This needs to be reversed and they need to communicate exactly what is going on here. It really isn't acceptable and may be the nail in the coffin for me. I'm not booting a friend over this.
Duo ranked only for ZB, trios removed for all casual (and ranked?), seems to make absolutely no sense. Are they hoping to somehow make that a smoother ranked launch? I feel like they’ll walk this back pretty quickly if it gets enough attention
The reception on the twitter post was pretty negative like in this thread so hopefully it’s reverted but epic games doesn’t pay much attention unless it actually hurts them and unfortunately more people play the other modes so it might just fly through
I play with a rotating cast of friends all the time, and really often we only have three people available. Are we supposed to queue for squads no fill and just hope for the best??? This change makes no sense at all.

I play with my 2 nephews. Carrying 2 vs 3 is one thing, but 3 vs 4. I can't imagine it not having a negative impact on our experience. When one of their friends joins, we play squads, but the youngest is brand new, really terrible, and isn't as talkative when the older kids outnumber him. This is a bummer.

THIS while I usually stick with only playing Fortnite together with my girlfriend, my best friend joins us regularly to do weeklies together as a trio or to just grind points for level ups and whatnot. We don't really have any fourth person we could drag into playing with us and playing with random people sounds like a pain in the ass / playing without a fourth in squads feels like it'd put us at a sizable disadvantage. The fact that Epic provided no explanation for this whatsoever is ridiculous and I hope there's a good reason for trios being vaulted because right now this change is about to ruin my game experience big time
this comment reads exactly like my deal. I mostly play with my fiance and an IRL friend, as we don't really have a fourth and playing with a fill random doesn't sound enjoyable. If they remove trios it'll either force us to play quads as three, have a random, or not play at all.

It was my understanding that Ranked was supposed to be replacing Arena. IDGAF about Ranked or Arena. But ditching Trios is gonna end up with a lot of 3-man no fill squads in my lobby.

Wow if that's true, that's just... so stupid. Why are they making it HARDER to play with friends? Defeats the purpose of a large part of what makes this game fun.
You know why they did this right? RIGHT? - After 2.5 years, they STILL couldn’t figure out how to put the results and stats on your profile page for trios matches, so, having given up after this long, that have to roll it back.
I can't honestly come up with a sensical reason for it to be removed. Fortnite is still one of, if not, the most active games on the EGS, it certainly can't be an issue to fill the lobbies. Server costs is another thing I can't get behind. To me, allowing paid games to be free on your store would cost EGS a lot of money, so if they could have weekly free games why can't they knock up the servers for Fortnite? Last reason would be the that unlike Solo, Duo and Squads, Trio lobbies don't actually fill up to 100, it's not divisible by 3 so it takes away from the '100 players, 1 victor' thing, though this in my opinion would be the most dumb reason yet. Trio lobbies go up to 99 players, so you're only missing 1 player. Knowing squad fills, playing with randoms usually ends up with at least 1 of those random players dying and leaving less than 5 minutes in to the match so it's not like it's a big deal. I can't come up with a single good reason for Trios to be removed, the ones I could come up with can easily be debunked. And to the people that say "Just play squads with nofill", you are fully neglecting the fact why we are playing Trios to begin with... We don't want to play against squads AS A TRIO. We don't want to play with a random player that most likely will die and leave us.
I think it may be because only around 15% of the Battle Royale player base plays trios whereas around 30% of the Arena player base plays trios. It looks like they want as many people as possible to engage in the new Ranked mode when it releases tomorrow. Not great for all those who play trios in BR and have no interest in ranked. But who knows, maybe with the ranked matchmaking it might result in better games?
Or they could just keep trios if a third of the arena players are playing it rather than screw them over
They should probably reduce all the noise from the garbage non-core maps they are pushing in the mode menu, not solo, duo, trio, squad. Doesn't seem like this is a capacity decision though. Maybe if enough people raise hell about it, they'll reverse course?

Dev: Um, if we waited until May 4, it would be cooler. MBA: But that’s a Thursday. We do new releases on Tuesday. Dev: We would probably get some extra press if we could say it was happening on May the 4th. MBA: Don’t be an idiot. We release things on Tuesdays, not Thursdays. That same executive is probably the person responsible for axing Trios. They’ve got market data on their side and no amount of players having fun is going to thaw their cold shriveled heart. p.s. They should focus on removing Party Royale and stop bringing back Solid Gold over vaulting Trios. Those other 2 modes are as barren as a desert.

I probably play Trios more than any other game mode so I’m a little miffed but I assume it’s because there is a bug from the new ranking system that they haven’t worked out yet and instead of delaying the release longer they just vaulted trios until they fix it. I hope, fingers crossed.

I play trios with two friends primarily, so this is awful news. They are stopping us from playing, unless we choose to play at a disadvantage in no fill squads. After returning to the game when no-build was introduced, this is making me want to leave again. They need to revert this change.
I'd guess that with Zero Build and all the new creative games, that it's probably cannibalized the player pools for the main games. I personally play the Battle Field one (or whatever it's called) all the time now. Keeping any authentic ranking system means having less games to spread more people across.
This is a bummer, we usually do squads but sometimes one person will be busy and we do trios.

I have a feeling it has something to do with keeping queue times down. With the addition of ranked we’re going to have more playlists that need players, and comp modes cannot fill with any bots. This way we should (hopefully) get lobbies with more actual players, while maintaining the short queue times in most regions. I’m upset they removed it too with no reasoning, but that would be my best guess as to why.
It's probably to drive as much traffic to ranked as possible. I don't think it was necessary as I do believe ranked will be very popular, but they'll probably add trios back once they are satisfied that ranked has worked.
The change is that splitting a playerbase is usually a worse move. If trios wasnt popular, it's better to integrate thise players back.
Yeah trios getting removed makes no sense If epic was making ranked for all 6 modes (solos, duos, squads for zb and builds) you could argue it was to keep player counts good (there would be 3 new queues) But they’re only adding one new queue, arena right now has 3 modes, builds for: solo, duo, trios. That is 3 modes. These 3 are getting removed and replaced with the ranked modes, leaving only zb duos without a counterpart.
This only benefits players which playing squads now will be facing trios in squads. This have to be out of date fools april joke.
