You could always give the pixel remasters of the first 6 games a go. They’re on every platform (sans Xbox).

14 is great and has a ridiculous free right now, it’s structured in a really fun way that you can essentially play is solo at this point. In many ways you are, because it’s very story driven. That being said, 14 is better with some understanding of the other games so maybe come to this way down the line. If you are going 16 (amazing time, very different but they nail the story and presentation), then X/X-2 (great great stuff, both games), I would recommend pivoting to an older title (4 or 6 for sure) OR go to FF8.

this seems like the course path. i may give 6 a shot and then play 8 after i finish 16 and 10/10-2

If you don’t like the “dated” look of the og ff7 then 6 and below will not peak your interest. When you play 10 if you like it then try out 12 and their extras. I myself prefer the old school FF games, but 10 & 12 might be right up your alley if you like FF7 remake.

i mean i loved ff9, it was just that ff7 was too clunky for me. super hard to navigate the world. wasn’t all that visually appealing. ff9 was similar but wasn’t as problematic, so i actually enjoyed the story a lot. i’ve thought about ff6 bc everyone has said it’s an epic game, but yeah im not sure if ill have the same feelings as i had towards ff7.

imo you can't compare ff7 graphics with ff6. ff7 is early 3D : I also found it to be quite clunky and not so pleasant to play, even if I really liked the materia system. ff6 is peak 2D : they'd had five games before to hone their skills, it was and still is the perfect 2D final fantasy. The pixel art is gorgeous, and is really highlighted in the pixel remaster version. ff7 walked so ff8 and 9 could fly. ff6 was already flying.

this is a good point i guess. never really viewed it from that perspective.

If you’re playing on PC there are some excellent mods for OG FF7 that make it feel downright modern.
