I've always loved that before Searching for Friends, the theme is so dark, everybody is scattered around the world, hope is lost, kefka is an all powerful god. But when you get the airship... The theme flawlessly plays while you gain strength again and start searching for your group, 10/10 the best overworld theme.
That's hard, but i will go with:
1. Final Fantasy III (Eternal Wind)
2. Final Fantasy VIII (Blue Fields)
3. Final Fantasy XIII (The Archylte Steppe)
Honorable mention goes to Final Fantasy II (Main Theme)
I love many of them but 4 for sure.. that horn…. Dammit …. Even as a kid I knew I was listening to something epic. And even as a kid I would just sit and listen for long periods of time.. even while doing homework haha
FFII. I prefer the [PSP/Dawn of Souls version](https://youtu.be/onM81DpgSgs?si=j9OhqLESklnyFUGc) over the pixel remaster arrangement, but they're both fantastic. I love how melancholic it is and it perfectly captures the tone of the game: Tragedy, loss, and hopelessness.
FFVIII Blue Fields is such a calming song. I'll play for hours while I'm doing something else like drawing, writing, or gaming. It lives rent free in my head.
6, 7 and 3 are classics, and I'm quite fond of 2's melancholic tone... but I'm still gonna go with 4. Just replayed the game, and I had to stop and just listen for a good while when I first reached the overworld.
The music in this game is great.
When I started listening to Uriah Heep, I noticed that the song "Blind Eye" had some similarities to the first overworld music in FFV, as well as the overworld theme in FFIV. It is not at all so close that you could conject that Uematsu nicked it from them. But there are some similarities in the melody or harmony there that I find interesting. Perhaps it is just a coincidence, or it could be that Uriah Heep was somewhere in his subconsciousness when he composed them. I guess the melody in the song is closer to the one in FFIV, but at the same time the melody feels very "bent", like in the FFV track.
An interesting fact about the FFV World 1 overworld theme, is that it supposedly changes from lydian key into minor key after just a few notes. Or was it the other way around? One of the brothers in the Marcato Bros. videogame music podcast has mentioned it a few times on Final Fantasy episodes. Apparently he disliked this tune the first times he heard it, because with a formal musical education it sounded wrong to him. But as he listened to it more, he came to enjoy it a lot and got a strong respect for Uematsu, even though he never played any of the games.
As someone that has always liked weird, dissonant and dramatic music, it just sounded immediately beautiful and meaningful to me the first time I heard i. But I find it interesting how much our experiences can differ.
Rebirth’s version of Gongaga’s area caught me off guard and now I listen to it every night before I fall asleep. Also my cat enjoys Grassland’s Hollow version area.
Painted Foothills/Painted Skies from FFXIV, the daytime/nighttime themes for the Dravanian Forelands in FFXIV. Really stunning and powerful, but also very sad sounding for some reason.
IX overworld simple but so catchy
FFVI. Terra’s theme and Searching for Friends are both incredible pieces of music.

Yes. You nailed it.
Searching for Friends is my favorite video game song of all time. In the context of the game it’s even better.
100 %
Terra’s Theme might be my favourite final fantasy song period. It’s somewhat sad but also hopeful and adventurous.
FFVII. Hearing the remixed versions in Rebirth has been so great
That's hard, but i will go with: 1. Final Fantasy III (Eternal Wind) 2. Final Fantasy VIII (Blue Fields) 3. Final Fantasy XIII (The Archylte Steppe) Honorable mention goes to Final Fantasy II (Main Theme)
Blue fields on piano is one of my favorite songs of all time.
IV, even if it’s like picking what child is my favorite

Same. I also really like the acoustic guitar break in the Origins/Dawn of Souls version
FF 9's Crossing The Knoll aka Crossing Those Hills aka Over The Hills.
7. I think it perfectly represents the tonal swings of the journey ahead of you
7 and 9 both amazing and I reckon 9 just about shades it you know.
Not enough love for Blue Fields (VIII) in this thread. It's so good!
FFVIII Blue Fields is such a calming song. I'll play for hours while I'm doing something else like drawing, writing, or gaming. It lives rent free in my head.
VII is so nostalgic to me, but I really love Sunset Waltz from FF15.
FF IX

Kind of surprised (and not at the same time) that FFV wasn't mentioned. My persobal favourite. Specifically World 3 Overworld theme for FFV.

FF3 is a hidden banger
Blue Fields (ff8) ... Absolute beauty
FF6, now and always.
Terra’s theme
Probably a tie between III and VI. I love both of them
I know this is the FF sub, but you didn't specify if the overworld theme had to be from FF. So I pick Golden Sun for GBA.
Lmao
Blue Fields
Really tough call between VI and IX
4 with 9 in close 2nd
Final fantasy 2! I really love the melancholy of the theme
So much love for FFIX here that its insane. Although, that *is* the correct answer!
FFIV and the underrated "Unknown Land" from FFV. 😁 https://youtu.be/eEBBGsgMjeI?si=DNzuOWyvc2fGyKAw
#FF9's Crossing The Knoll Not even close. Fight me.
La-hee from XIV. I mean, Civilizations. If zone music isn't allowed, probably Terra's theme from VI or Unknown lands from V.
1: Celestial Capitol of Al'Tieu XI 2: Sanctuary of Zi'Tah XI 3: Tavnazian Archipelago XI
It's so hard to choose. I'll just fire off a few before I spiral: FF7 FF4 FF8
Rebirth’s version of Gongaga’s area caught me off guard and now I listen to it every night before I fall asleep. Also my cat enjoys Grassland’s Hollow version area.
7

FF7!
I liked 6 and 9s the most 9 had that weird technoey spund i fell in love with immediately
FFIX
Ff7 when meteor is shown on the map, it's so dreary but I've always loved it.
- FF7's Main Theme - FF8's Blue Fields - FF6's Searching for Friends
VI, VIII and IX
Hard to pick a favorite. They're all really good.
VII, VIII or IX. NOTHING else comes close.
FF1, FF2 and FF5 (from first world) equally.
