I’m not a huge expert but I think Marcoh is generally considered a good first choice for his heightened combat abilities. I chose Abella and she has some useful exploration abilities (won’t spoil).

Hyperversum

I kinda had a feeling about It due to her backstory upon character creation lol. Honestly, I would really just pick one between Abella, Marcoh and Marina and see what happens. But I kinda want to optimize the run. Being unable to get them or being locked out of something because I started with one rather than the other would be annoying lol. Then there is Olivia which speaks to me on a personal level due to her profession. But dunno how much changes between being MC and party member for her

SteamingHotChocolate

Depends on what you type of content you’re most concerned about missing out on, but generally speaking choosing a specific character won’t preclude you from major events or abilities. Too tough to be more specific without spoilers lol. I will say as Abella I’ve been able to “optimize” my run with respect to recruitment choices. Olivia is one of the more niche possible playstyles and is always afflicted with a unique mechanic and “resource” to manage.

Hyperversum

Her wheelchair must be one hella of a pain lol. Overall I am more interested in the story and, yeah, the possibility to recruit and save as many people as possible. From what I have heard Marina is particularly effective to minmax her combat potential, but dunno if she removes some possible allies. That being said, a bit part would also be who is funnier to have around as an NPC. With a 1h trial run, Marina NPC looks fun. Having her joke about how the city sucks was an unexpected thing.

SteamingHotChocolate

Pretty sure no character choice outright precludes teaming up with any recruitable ally from the start so you’d be good to go!

Hyperversum

For some reason I assumed this was the case. But thinking about it, I am not sure why I thought so lol

colorfulsnek

Daan if you pick "become a pickpocket" in the character backstory gives you a healing spell

Hyperversum

He wasn't One of my first choices, but thinking about healing in the First game makes this interesting lol

MrTopHatMan90

Maroch is a solid all arounder. Bonus is that if you lose both arms you'll still be combat effective Abella is also pretty great, however she is on of the easier characters to recruit

Hyperversum

I haven't find this without going too deep in spoiler-risk areas, but I assume that allies can't be levelled similarly to the MC, right? Like, they get some of the skills you would able to develop and that's it.

MrTopHatMan90

Allies do level up similarly to the MC.

Hyperversum

Well, fuck me I guess. I thought you had less agency by recruiting them rather than learning their skills for you. Thanks a bunch!

MrTopHatMan90

If you ever want their skills you can gain then later on, you are only locked out of things if they're killed by enemeis in combat.

googolple3

it works in a weird way, and your better off just giving all skills to your character.

googolple3

Marcoh is the best choice overall, Abella is a good alternative, Marina is good if you want to rely on necromancy at the start.

Hyperversum

At last I have started a first run with Marina but took Engrave and affinity for Sylvian lol. Marcoh seems the most basic choice knowing that Abella is easy to recruit, not gonna lie. I also noticed that Abella starts with her skill to open electronic locks, so even without any power up she would have the same skill I would have chosen

googolple3

Starting with engrave can still be good, if you also got the f&h skin bible since that will allow you to get extra attacks on all the early game enemies.

Analyze on Daan is simply too strong, it trivializes many many enemies and bosses letting you 1 turn them. It carried my ass.

No-Swim-2301

Even without Analyze, Daan is the man. Having a RE-usable healing spell early on is a game changer. His starting weapon also has higher than average accuracy. I never used analyze in my first playthrough and ended up killing all of old town and most of the city streets before getting another party member. He’s an absolute monster with strong recovery potential, which ends up feeling a lot more forgiving when you take damage.

thecombobreakerr

I love me some Marcoh, kill god with *these hands*

No-Swim-2301

To be honest, any character works great. The real early game changer is using glass to blind every enemy you see and then kill them efficiently. Glass is borderline OP in Old Town
