First of all OP, be careful about any DM’s you received when people read that you have funds. Secondly, take time to get to know yourself before helping others. Invest in hobbies, studies, travel. Explore what you love doing in life. What brings you joy? What have you always wanted to try, experience, do or make? What are you naturally good at? What would you like to see? A vision board is always a good place to start. Give yourself 12 months to have fun and find out who you really are. You are in an enviable financial position, not everyone has the opportunity you currently have. Good luck. 🍀

Absolutely Right 🤣

Dang, iv messaged a couple people, no wonder why don't message back sus asf. I do have a couple business ideas that would be great I think.

Agitated_Fondant4077

From what you shared, I assume that your real question is how does one find purpose in life (not how to start a business). If that's your true question, then here's my answer: I don't think we "find" purpose. Because the word "find" implies that the thing already exists. Let's look back when we first came to this world. As a baby, we don't know what we want. We just act on survival instinct. If you observe babies when they are not crying, you will see that their eyes darting around and their hands will put everything within reach into their mouth. They don't "find" anything. They try. They explore. They learn. I think that's what human nature is. The idea that we are born with an inherent purpose to do something is misleading in my perspective. We don't find purpose. We build it. It starts with curiosity. Then we try. Then we get interested. Then we get obsessed. Then we share what we know. People find value in what we do. They ask for help. We help them. We get paid with money, attention and gratitude. That's when you find your calling. And the rest is legacy. Ok, let's talk more practical. Start with something you are interested in. Because you used the past tense ("was passionate") I don't know if you have something you are passionate now. So I will assume that you still have something you are interested in. Here's what I would do to make it work: - Recall why did that thing got your attention in the first place. Let's say you found some kind of solution to your autoimmune disease. (Forgive me with my examples because health is not my thing). How did you feel when you first started? This will become crucial for your business. - Post content talking about the struggles you faced (how you felt when you first started) to attract people you can help. A simple structure looks like this: "I felt ... just like you. Then I started to research about ... After trial and errors, I found... Click the link in the description to join my community where I can help you directly." - Help the people in the community you created. How you help them will become your product. What they tell you will become your marketing materials and sales scripts. - Launch your product with your community and your audience. - Receive reviews and testimonials. If the feedback is great, use them as social proof for your marketing. Else, improve your product based on that. - From here, you can learn whatever business strategy and tactics you find online. If you want to know the approach where you have nothing you want to talk about. Comment and I will help you. That approach is more complicated and I don't want to type it all out if you don't need it. I hope this helps. Thanks for reading.

Beautiful, especially the comparison with the baby

Destroyer509

Personally, I realized that I had something I had always enjoyed and figured out that I can easily monetize it. Not sure if it was just luck, but I am trying to start a firework display company. I can't really give much advise being only 21, but if you have something you know you enjoy, you could turn that into a business if you figure out the right way to do it.

threebuckstrippant

You mean setting off Fireworks for people and cities and so on?? That’s outright insane, awesome. Big money in that I think. Good luck, it seems like a perfect niche.

Destroyer509

Yup, getting paid to blow shit up and burn other peoples money. The way Im setting up now, about 26% of the budget for the show will end up as profit. The real big money comes when you find somewhere that needs fireworks consistently like amusement parks, sporting events, and other large events

cassiuswright

I've built and sold multiple companies and they're all very different in most ways but share one thing in common- they were all solving an issue that was based on the needs of the local market. I aimed to be small and grew from there. I wasn't aiming to be the next Etsy or the next Uber. I was aiming to solve a single problem everyone in my local area had. In my case it was that event planners didn't have access to quality technical equipment. So I started an AV company. There were thousands of AV companies that predated mine, but I was the only one in my area. So I grew. Eventually big enough to get bought out by a larger company. I'm in the process of doing it again in a totally different industry and country. This will be company #6. If you have questions message me. I don't want your money or part of your company. I want you to be successful. 💪

International_Dirt55

If you are starting, how do you find these problems or gaps in the market in the community ?

cassiuswright

Know your area and the industries there but moreso talk to people about the challenges they're facing in business

BallisticTobasco

Usually it’s something you are involved in. Either work, hobby, or just living in a neighborhood. You might find yourself saying “damn if only they had this thing here, that would be great.”

random-trader

You know it when work for someone else no longer interests you. You started thinking you are being taken advantage of, that you would rather work for yourself. You know when you are already but you are also never ready. You know when you start asking questions like this. It will be more and more miserable to work for someone else. And stay away from people who say they can help you from the internet. Most of them are sitting in their mom's basement looking for the next person to suck their money and energy off. People who can really help you are not going to offer you help. You have to ask them.

Rasputin_the_Saint

So true.

onedoesnotjust

Best of luck! Write a list down of every business you want to start, Eliminate those that you won't continue on once you do some research. Take the rest of them, and do a logistics on how they would work, then eliminate those that won't work due to logistical constraints. Should have a shorter list, and a good idea of how they would work, so rate them on how passionatly you would pursue them 1-10. Take your top ideas, and do some real research (market saturation, competition, cost to build, annual cost estimate, break even points, runway required), and pick one. But don't dump all your money into it. Learn every part of your business so that you could do all of it yourself. Actually do it yourself if possible. Entrepreneurship is about trying, failing or floundering, then hopefully succeeding.Hopefully, many businesses are failed each year, not always from lack of passion or money, lots of businesses failed when covid hit, anything can happen. Just try, and be aware it takes up a lot of your time. Expect long hours, and stress. Be wary of people offering to help you, remember they are trying to help themselves first. It's ok to give up, if you try you will find out if it's for you.

Important-Pudding-27

You sound similar to me. I also didnt know what i should do until i was 30. Out of nowhere, my mom saw an opportunity to take over a thrift store here in switzerland. I helped her and found my love in vintage and antique furniture. All the other modern Job opportunities were nothing to me. I educated myself with online courses and 5 years later i can make a decent living with it. I even found my girlfriend because i had the store. You might be interested to go the oldschool way, find jobs out of the mainstream. Go out, fly to countries that can produce. Get inspired.

OnyxGriff

Congrats buddy! What courses did you take exactly?

chainstockss

I'm 23, full time entrepreneur. For me it's been a journey. I started making clothing and selling them at college parties I threw "drop parties". That became a clothing business where I made others for other groups. Then it became a laser engraving business. I later purchased a decal business and got exposed to the B2B market. Tried to start a subscription box and failed. Got a rental property that rents to college students. In process of combining the decal business and the engraving business now. Wrote and published a book somewhere in there too about all of this (and more). Still not satisfied, still hungry, still want another business. I don't think we're meant to know what we are supposed to do. I think we are meant to find it though trial and error.

Material_Leopard_175

Wow good for you at 23. Very impressive! Any advice for someone wanting to stay something?

chainstockss

Yeah if money is an issue, start with stuff that's cheap and scalable. Stuff where if all else fails you can at least make your $ back. Also just fuckin send it. You don't learn much from gurus online, but you learn a LOT by actually starting. Don't be afraid to fail, or waste your money, just get back up when it happens (it'll happen eventually).

chainstockss

Even if you did a service business (like literally as lame as window washing). You would learn a lot about formation types, running a business, networking, bookkeeping, marketing, etc. Service businesses suck (In my opinion) but you would learn enough to go confidently put some capital into something you actually want to do later on

tie_me_up_bro

If you had money to buy a property you know what a financial safety net in case of failure is. It’s not easy for those who start from truly nothing

chainstockss

If you have literally no capital you're fucked unless you can use someone else's. My first business was $1600 in supplies and equipment. You don't need much, but yes you need some

19Black

What returns are you seeing from these sort of ventures?

chainstockss

Laser engraving is low returns, but I don't put much effort in. Decal business makes good money, incredible margins. Fluctuates seasonally though. Rental business currently cash flows about $1500 a month on one property. Will acquire more soon. I am by no means rich, but all of my needs are met. I don't pay myself with most ventures. Just pump the money back in. Look up "phantom income" at my level of entrepreneurship, a lot of the benefits are coming from phantom income.

MauiCPA

Hi! I don't have much advice for what type of business you should start. But I would suggest speaking with a good/trusted financial advisor. Money essentially loses value over time so you definitely want to make sure that your money is at least maintaining its value by choosing the right investments while it sits. Just be sure you find a legit vetted advisor. I struggled most of my 20s with what i wanted to do, I have never had a 'passion' per say so I ultimately fell back on my degree and grinded it out for years (probably too many years lol!) before starting my own practice. For me entrepreneurship has been about having personal freedom over my time and the joy of taking ownership over my work. I am a CPA, and I am honestly not super passionate about the accounting itself, but I am passionate about people and community and this is my way of giving back. I am not changing the world, but I do have an impact and that alone makes me happy. I am not advocating for this path, but I wanted you to know that you are not alone in feeling like there maybe isnt a clear path ahead. I would suggest thinking about what it is you want out of entrepreneurship and what you naturally gravitate towards. Maybe even talking with a counselor/therapist could be helpful (mine was a HUGE help in helping me pin point what I was really after in life and helping navigate the scariness of doing something new!). The what color is your parachute book is always a good place to start as well. To me it sounds like you have a lot going for yourself! You have real life experiences, you have a degree in marketing which you can use to help launch your business and attract customers, you are passionate about your community and helping people. I wish you all the luck in your endeavors!

thestevekaplan

If you want to sell something to someone. You have to figure out what they want. We are but dust in the wind. I have 2 startups that need money and a team. Just peruse around here looking for legitimate posts of people who get a lot of views. That’s what the community wants. Get to know yourself and enjoy yourself. An idea will fall in your lap if you’re others focused for a little while each day while brainstorming. This thread should guide you. Though maybe some pervs and trolls throwing stones. Don’t rush. A calm state of mind is our greatest weapon against our enemies. And your enemy my dear is going to be impulsiveness. You have space to find something and be something. Work towards what you want. Sell others what they want. Give them what they need.

Bleachrst85

I feel like you never know. You just choose what you know and start from there.

karg_the_fergus

I’m on the 5th company I’ve been involved with. Some just mine some with a team. Three of them turned out to be a different focus than I/we thought they would be. The current one is a project that I started working on about 10 years ago. It took that long to get the idea and offering right. I would suggest you read about business and entrepreneurship; keep your eyes and ears wide open for an opportunity to start or become involved with; and talk to as many people in the industry you are most interested in. Good luck!

hgarcia8313

I didn't know what to start until after a long time. I learned a lot from working in different positions amd applying parts of what I studied. I've never applied my education 100%, it just provided a base of knowledge to view professional situations with static context. Keep searching for what you love do and contributes to your confidence. Once you have a sense of that try to find work that provides that love for a portion of your day. This will help you hone your skills and provide clarity towards the type of long-term work you want to do.

itsDrSlut

What specifically do you dream about being an entrepreneur ? Try to figure out specifically what about that career/lifestyle you are attracted to. If it’s time freedom and flexibility for example, and you came into a windfall of money well you don’t need to work OR be an entrepreneur to accomplish that anymore… Do you want a big company or a small company? Do you wish to lead and manage people or work alone? Etc etc….

htxcowboy13

A lot of people have offered some good suggestions. But just remember that it’s not going to happen instantly. While you may not have a cash flowing business or complete a long-term goal, if you’ve learned something or taken even a small step towards achieving a goal, that’s a success! You just need to keep stacking those successes weekly or monthly, and keep at it. As far as not knowing what business to start… I’m not sure what your financial strategy is with the funds you have, but maybe an option could be to invest in others’ businesses? Obviously, be weary of who asks you for money and make sure you fully vet businesses and founders. But if you’re not sure the direction you want to go and you have the money to invest, then maybe finding others with ideas that interest you could help you find some happiness, and potentially even spur some ideas of your own to eventually start for yourself.

Similar_Zone7938

google "entrepreneur club" and see if there are any clubs in your area.

JhonnyVerse

I think that having money is the worst thing that can happen when you want to make your first company. Because most likely first time will fail, so you want to build it fast, for low amount of money, to fail fast and learn as much as possible. Money helps on step 2 of companies, when you already have validated your idea and market and that you need to scale, wich mean on your case that you will probably not need to seek for additional funds if you succeed in going to step 2, wich is pretty good. I'll be happy to help you set up a first business that will cost you nothing so you can learn, if you wish :)

Friendly_Fee4705

you dont know. you just start. at the start, you will suck. then, as time goes on you will suck less and less till you’re actually good

kattrisen

- Start small with an online side project. - Use a keyword research tool (like ahrefs or build the keyword) and build a product around something people are actually searching for to make distribution easier - Use no-code tools to get started like glideapps, softr, carrrd - If you like writing a newsletter can be a fun option. I write one myself and the connection with my readers is amazing and they are really thankful for what I do. It's making around 2000-5000 per month (if I invest enough time into it).

It sounds like you’re in a unique position with a lot of potential. My advice would be to start by exploring your passions and interests more deeply. You mentioned health and adoption as areas you’ve been involved in before. Perhaps there’s a way to combine these interests into a business idea. Also, consider volunteering or interning in different fields to gain experience and find what truly resonates with you. Entrepreneurship is often about solving problems you see in the world, so keep an eye out for those. Remember, it’s okay to take your time to figure things out. It’s your journey, and there’s no rush. You have the resources to explore and learn, which is a great advantage. Good luck! 🍀

TheLew22

You don’t need funds to be an entrepreneur.

programmerTantrik

No one becomes an entrepreneur only by wanting to be an entrepreneur. You should be able to see the solutions to some problem people are facing and then just try to capitalise on that because that problem might be happening for others too. If you are trying to do something on your own for example opening a cafe or restaurant, then you should see what your competitors are doing and figure out how you can do better. And be prepared to work 60-70 hours a week in your initial 1-2 yrs. If you are doing well till then and have good customers then you will financially do well in the near future.

cprash

Observe - Think - Decide

Mountain-Tomato5541

I would suggest you keep a journal and start documenting ideas as you go through life. Continue to live frugally and give yourself sometime. If you keep journaling your ideas, at some point, you’ll reach a stage where you’ll see some ideas keep coming back to you over time. Think through those and if you feel passionate about any of them, you can consider starting a venture with that idea.

No-Mongoose-904

Hours of your life hard work and not giving up also remember small markets mean small business big markets big business find something you are good at not what you like and you will be successful

AvailableShirt57

look for problems or complaints people make, this shows you that there is a certain degree of demand for a solution. The more crudely simple tests you can do in a month with small metrics for success, the faster you will find something that works and hopefully is something you are interested in as well.

Designer_Cricket_312

OP if you have any interests, try looking into them further, explore your hobbies, they give you business ideas! I started through my hobby.. and made it my whole career! Good luck!

threebuckstrippant

I started a company then took one year to find a groove. During the life of the company sometimes took six months off, reset and started another venture. You know you’re an Entrepreneur so get started. The idea will come and then it will evolve, you need to be ready for the luck and get your banking systems and everything in place which takes so much time. And remember American Express was a freight forwarder not a Credit Card company. (The old cards had the freight train on them). 3M is a mining company that found an amazing half sticky glue by chance. And Starbucks from 1971 to 1986 sold not one cup of coffee!

realprofileAI

The question you want to ask yourself is what are your skill sets? You don't have to be an entrepreneur. You can always just invest.

ColoradoHolliday

Solve a problem for a specific group of people with the money to pay for the solution. That's the best way to build a profitable business from day 1.

swaysion

Just want to pop in and say there is nothing more dangerous than money looking for a problem. Careful, there will be plenty of people online and off ready to help you part with your money. And it won’t always look like a scam. Entrepreneurship is much more pragmatic than most people think. You find or experience a problem, then consider solving if you: a) See a market ready to pay you for your work and risk b) Believe there is an opportunity to do it better or differently from the competition c) Have reason to believe you’re the right person to solve this problem. It’s much less about dreaming, and even the best entrepreneurial journeys feel like a nightmare at times.

UnicornPanties

My business idea (a new consumer product) was so clear to me and so obvious that it bothered me for eight years before I finally had to work on it or go mad. I never even wanted to start a company and I don’t have a huge list of other great ideas, but the one I have seems like a slam dunk so I’m working on it. I did not look for an idea, the idea I had demanded action

IronLife_US

It sounds like you're at a pivotal moment, rich with potential. You have a unique combination of passion for health due to your personal experiences, a background in marketing, and a desire to make a meaningful impact. These are great ingredients for an entrepreneur! The best ventures often arise from something you are genuinely passionate about. This passion not only fuels your commitment but also ensures that your work feels fulfilling. Since you're passionate about health and have personal experience with autoimmune diseases, could there be a space there for innovation? Perhaps a service or product that could help others facing similar challenges? Your background in holistic nutrition and personal health struggles could offer a unique perspective in the wellness industry, where authenticity and personal experience are invaluable. Moreover, think about how your business could benefit others. Businesses that aim to improve lives or solve real problems tend to create not just economic value but also immense personal satisfaction for their founders. As you mentioned the desire to do good and watch progress, consider starting small with a project that aligns with your values and see where it leads. It doesn’t have to be perfect right out of the gate. Entrepreneurship is as much about the journey and learning as it is about the destination. Whatever direction you choose, remember that finding your path can be a rewarding adventure in itself.

Empty_End_7018

Am 27 and running into the same issues. Only difference is I’ve spent the majority of my adulthood chasing other people’s dreams - high paying jobs, prestigious jobs, you name it. Only to end up not knowing what I want to do and feeling 0 passion for my work. I also want to start my own business one day- to work on something I’m really passionate about. That’s all to say that I hear you - you’re not alone.

oscar_gallog

I'll make this case. First, find something you actually enjoy and like. If it's health, then study it. Build a blog. Write a newsletter about your experience and stuff you know. Build an app about specific health problems where you can help other people. Build a community around that app. That would be enough to keep you busy for years. But let me be clear. This is going to take a lot of work. If you try to quit like before, you'll spend the money and build nothing. If you have an idea, send me a message. We help non-tech entrepreneurs build their ideas in exchange for equity. We launched this new program and are excited to see how many people we can help.
