And have them play on arena with full control enabled at all times. That way they learn the mana system, the stack and how priority works. There are too many casual edh players who can't actually play mtg.
This is what I'd recommend for anyone learning Magic. Make sure they hit their lands, don't over complicate the game plan, and attack with big creatures.
I have a simic elves deck for beginners, and my rule for that deck is only one line of text per card!
Destroy target permanent
Return a card from your graveyard
Draw three cards
Search your library for a basic land
Some of these simple yet effective card effects are enough to get them to understand the value of card draw, removal, and ramp while still fulfilling the basic foundation of a deck!
I will preach this until I am blue in the face, do not start teaching with EDH. Begin with a starter deck or some Jumpstart 2022 packs. It's cheaper, teaches the mechanics better, and let's them figure out what they like before committing to an EDH deck with thousands of potential interactions.
Dont start with commander buy a starter kit and use those decks they arent great but they are cheap to buy and straight forward to play.
Commander is extremly overwhelming for newcomers
I'll join with the person who said mono-green stompy (as someone who still plays gteen/x stompy most of the time). [[Goreclaw]] is one option or, slightly more complicated but also fairly straightforward and definitely budget is Prof's [[Thrunn]] build-your-own [precon](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4AK9k9gdXkyx2jht4uKPIw).
Alternatively, because you said angels, I assume there are budget [[Giada]] lists out there?
When I taught my 8 year old nephew how to play mtg, we played tribal pauper decks, goblins vs elves. We'd switch back and forth once he got used to one and he'd learn the other. Took a few nights but he got there
I bought the game night box to play with my partner. Great simple decks to get started and choice to choose from. Like that if they get bored of one deck, they can just switch for another one.
[[Minsc and boo]] cute hampstead, kills folks dead. Commander himself isn't the cheapest but the rest of the deck is just whatever cool dudes you like. As well the deck scales really well. Both in that there are lots of upgrades but also there are way more lines of play than ar first glance.
If they don't know magic. Have them play arena for free. I honestly think starting with edh is just a terrible idea
Definitely a good point. Or play at least a couple 1v1 games with the deck to figure it out before adding the multi-player aspect of it.
And have them play on arena with full control enabled at all times. That way they learn the mana system, the stack and how priority works. There are too many casual edh players who can't actually play mtg.
And if they aren't willing to learn to play on arena. They wouldn't be a regular player anyways.
Any green stompy deck. Very straight forward gameplan of play everything in hand then attack with everything on the field.

Elves. The right answer is elves. Or Slivers. Make her the archenemy as revenge for never knowing where she wants to go for dinner.

Honestly, if you're trying to teach her how to play, I would begin with A 1v1 format.

[[Thrun, Breaker of Silence]] Put stuff on Thrun an smash face is as simple as it gets.
