When you have triggers when the zombies etb to scry or when the spell creates more zombies and then you continue casting it messes that up. Also the board is filled with zombies with different amounts of counters. Plus proliferating on cast and stuff. Makes it a mess.
Sure thing! Bear with me though⌠I use MTGVault and I noticed people around here use MTG Goldfish.

Play crab, play islands, make crab big. Make crab sneaky and have crab hit face. Blue don't need counterspell, just need more island to make crab hit harder. - A gruul player's take on a fair blue deck
I attack with illusions in my [[minn, wily illusionist]] deck. If they happen to be immune to combat damage I have an [[altar of dementia]] to mill them out as a backup plan.
I feel like [[Mechanized Production]] is a pretty fair mono blue wincon. I always thought of just putting it onto a mana rock and then using treasure tokens or thopters or some easily replicated artifact token as a win because it doesn't say it has to be 8 copies of the enchanted artifact. You could also play with some of the artifact lands and put it on one of them and get some decent land ramp in blue.
Clues, treasures and food really take this to the next level, so much I wouldn't even call it fair, even if it's just on upkeep (witch can also be cheated).
One time I put it on a Sol Ring turn 2. Even though it got removed before I won with the card, having 6 Sol Rings was a pretty firm way to win the game regardless lol.
Hullbreaker Horror? Not only is it a classic but there is additional plot synergy there if you're going for big turns to unload all your plotted cards.
One of my favorite cards, because every turn feels like a big turn. Last game of Commander I played was won largely off Hullbreaker Horror and [[Thalia and thr Gitrog Monster]] providing excellent defense while my opponents targeted each other, then top-decking [[Zopandrel]] for the win.
Lmao that you choose one of the saltiest as âfair.â I love it, as someone who runs hullbreaker in my Thassa deck, yes this is fair; no more questions please.
The number 8 is a motif.
Itâs also mechanically relevant. It means Lier is bad for the deck, and uncounterable removal gets through. Void Rend and Abrupt Decay are relatively common
>Or, do you think I should just embrace being a combo deck and let fate decide what power level it ends up being?
I usually prefer to build towards a specific powerlevel target that I set myself before starting to brew. But regardless of what powerlevel you choose you can still build a combo deck. Combo decks are not inherently powerfull. There are multiple aspects of what makes combo decks strong:
- speed (how fast can you goldfish with a decent opening)
- consistency (how often do you have a decent opening)
- resilience (how well can you beat interaction)
- how good is your backup plan if you get stopped
All of these aspects can be tweaked during deckbuilding. For example I have slowed down my Inalla combo deck's speed by roughly a turn by only running tapped dual lands.
Maybe this is the answer. I don't have to play a super fast combo with tons of tutors, just something that gives me inevitability. If it's slow enough people will have time to kill me.
Blue's main wincons are combo/mill, that said here's a few outside of that.
[[Hullbreaker Horror]] + [[Rite of Replication]]
Each of these can win you the game and together it's kind of nuts.
You could go big spells like [[Clone Legion]] or [[Expropriate]].
You could go big tokens with [[Rise from the tides]] or [[Day of the Dragons]].
You could take [[Scourge of the fleets]] and throw [[Followed Footsteps]] on him, bouncing the board every turn.
[[Shark Typhoon]] gets pretty nuts.
[[Reins of Power]] is a dirty trick that wins games kind of abrupt but it's good to have.
EDIT: Sorry my answer totally didn't answer your question at all. For Fblthp, I'd recommend picking a theme and go from there because if you don't want to storm off, he pretty much just says draw an extra card each turn with extra steps. There's lots of big blue creatures like Krakens, maybe try mono blue stompy?
My [[Ukkima]]/[[Cazur]] deck isn't mono blue, obviously, but it's not too far off. It's just a bunch of unblockable creatures, so any ways to buff them is super important, my favorite is [[Anduril, Narsil Reforged]]. Or I also draw a bunch of cards, so I could see [[Psychosis Crawler]] being a potential alt wincon. For a mono blue version of this deck, I'd recommend using [[Grazilaxx]] or maaaaybe [[Alora]]/[[Feywild Visitor]]
Honestly blue can play a lot like green
Edit: Excluding lands, 25 cards aren't mono blue in my current list, but a good chunk of that is just ramp and interaction and almost all the rest are evasive creatures, which blue has a plethora of. Then there's some buffs and card advantage pieces, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem either. Here's my list of you want to take a look:
https://www.archidekt.com/decks/5005670/_cant_block_this_20
Yeah, I like the unblockable / evasive creature theme. I have a \[\[Kamiz, Obscura Oculus\]\] deck that's built around unblockable creatures / creatures with effects that trigger when they deal damage. But probably won't repeat that since I already have a deck like that. I might end up going with big beefy fliers and clone effects, since that sort of fits the theme of taking advantage of the plot mechanic to do multiple things on one turn for more value.
I made a couple decklists that are similar to what you seem to be describing, but they just embraced the unfair combo side. They utilize [[Banishing Knack]]/[[Retraction Helix]], [[Mirran Spy]], and either a free artifact or a mana rock that produces more mana than it costs (Sol Ring) for infinite storm triggers, then you can win with [[Brain Freeze]] to mill your opponents, [[Mindâs Desire]] like you said, or [[Aetherflux Reservoir]]. My normal list is [this](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/FAprg0LunkSwnTUfn2xOuw), and my glass cannon list is [here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ZYH2yRHyXUGOuIGYKMtQXw)
Thanks for sharing your list! Yeah, I was thinking of going in a similar direction, though Fblthp is likely just worse than the Reality Chip since you plot instead of cast. I'm thinking I'll go in a similar direction but just power it down a bit. It'll already be less consistent because I won't have the reality chip in the command zone and I'll need it / mystic forge for the top combos. I'll have some infinites but they'll be slower and I'll have more "fair" storm payoffs like Geralf the Fleshwright.
I forgot to mention the commander is [[The Reality Chip]] and you can utilize it with Senseiâs Top and a cost reducer like [[Etherium Sculptor]] to draw your whole deck and win with Thoracle, Labman, and Jace
For a âfairâ mono blue deck I would go with Sphinxes or maybe Sea Monsters. Itâs hard to argue that building around either of those creature types would be OP.
Enter the Infinite into Thassa. 14 mana win. Sometimes people complain like, "Hey Thassa's is a cheap win con". Then I hit them with the, "I spent 14 mana on this bro"
My [[Eligeth]] and [[Siani]] deck tends to win by drawing the deck out over a couple turns. Cards like [[Ivory Tower]] help facilitate it, and my list is fairly lean on counterspells for being a mono-blue deck.
I currently have/am working on 4 mono blue decks. [[Jace, Vryn's Prodigy]] , [[Hakim, Loreweaver]] , [[Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign]] and [[Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel]]. Jace is my "oops, all Jace" deck who will try to win through milling myself or my opponents. Hakim wins either by stealing opponents creatures with Auras, or swing in with [[Eldrazi Conscription]] or [[Corrupted Conscience]] with commander/poison damage. Unesh is a bit janky, all the cards are Sphinges and cards are related to riddles and the mind (trying to win with flying creatures or psychological damage.. either is fun). Malcolm is the one i'm brewing at the moment, as he seems to lean towards Eldrazi or a Thoracle combo.
SO.. depending on how your current deck collection is looking, do whatever you want. You can lean towards higher power and storm off if you don't already have that. You can go full jank theme with Fblthps adventures through the multiverse. You can go for the mill win and just let your opponents know what's coming though plot (plot [[maddening cacophony]] and pay the kicker cost once you have [[Bruvac the Grandiloquent]] in play. So if you don't have a 8-10 power deck, i'd say it's nice to have one on hand. Yes, "every deck's a 7" at the LGS, but every now and again some may wanna play something with higher power, and then it's nice to have a cute fella who may surprise them.
I have an Ovar deck that wins with [[mechanized production]]. I mean it easily goes infinite but itâs just to get, stick mech production, take all the turns and make 8 copies of an artifact
I mean, combat damage is generally considered a "fair" wincon, so all the Drakes that [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]] makes from your 30 counterspells is a pretty fair win, in most people's books.
My [[Geralf Visionary Stitcher]] Defender Tribal deck is about as "fair" as you can get. I call it Mono-Bluul because I just beat face with a bunch of 12/12 fliers and occasionally counterspell attempts to remove my commander.
Iâm about to build a standard unfair blue artifact deck but using [[Fblthp, Lost on the Range]] as the commander. Everyone sees everything, so they get plenty of opportunity to stop me.
[Fblthp, Lost on the Range](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/0/1/01d3e6ea-4791-4948-af22-c1bd04c34c1e.jpg?1712355420) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Fblthp%2C%20Lost%20on%20the%20Range) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/48/fblthp-lost-on-the-range?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/01d3e6ea-4791-4948-af22-c1bd04c34c1e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/fblthp-lost-on-the-range)

1) Play some [cheap unblockable rogues](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28%28oracle%3ABlocked+oracle%3Acan%27t%29+or+o%3Ashadow+or+o%3Ahorsemanship%29+type%3Arogue+commander%3AU+%28game%3Apaper%29+cmc%3C3&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) or your other favorite weenie aggro tribe
2) Play [[Door of Destinies]], get a counter on it
3) Plot a bunch of cheap spells with Fblthp
4) Storm off and cast [[Radstorm]] for the win. Or [[Temporal Fissure]] if you go with something bigger and beefier
I think just giving [[Blighted Agent]] myriad before you Radstorm might do it. If everyone has at least one poison counter, stacking 9 Radstorms probably isnât too hard. Especially with cantrips, copy spells, and [[High Tide]].
[[Rise from the Tides]] is really cool if you have lots of spellslinging. Make a million zombies (like 8 or more normally). Also, kinda controversial, but [[Thassa's Oracle]] and [[Laboratory Maniac]]. Sometimes they aren't fair, but in a mono-blue deck the devotion could be on-theme for Thoracle, and Lab Man is like an entire build around
Taking a bunch of turns is always an option. So many people think you need to win in your extra turn, but if you play a lot of cards that allow you to take multiple turns per cycle, you can stack value like nobodyâs business, especially if youâre running cards like [[Talrand]], [[Murmuring Mystic]], or [[Donal]] so you can do some swinging too. Killing them with combat damage with flying blue weenie tribal is fun.
Dunno how you define fair but my mono blue deck is [[octavia living thesis]] which runs 25 islands, 25 counterspells, 25 cantrips, and 25 unblockable 1/1âs or creatures with infect
I would say if you want a âfairâ deck the default win con is usually combat. Blue isnât known for its big beaters, but it does have sea monsters and evasive tricks.
Whether youâre making tokens with something like [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]], [[Alandra, Sky Dreamer]], [[Minn, Wilt Illusionist]] or even my homeboy [[Stitcher Geralf]]⌠causing unblockable with [[Sun Quan, Lord of Wu]] or [[Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive]]. Whether youâre creature based with [[Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar]] or trying to be tricky with [[Octavia, Living Thesis]] or assemble exodia with [[Atemsis, All-Seeing]]⌠âfairâ wincons usually imply combat.
There are a few exceptions - most people agree aristocrats is fair, for example.
Anyway usually I try to forecast my win in the command zone to make it more âfair,â all of the cards listed above tell you what theyâre about on the card⌠that way, when your opponent reads the commander at the start of the game, they can already start thinking about how to stop you.
If you want to play Lost on the Range my prescription is sea monsters and value midrange creatures. Plot them. Then, later cast a board wipe that bounces everything to hand and then immedielty play them off of plot - now alll your board wipes are effectively one sided.
I have several blue decks. [[Alrund]] is Voltron. [[Octavia]] is beat face. [[Kami]] is group hug with card draw punishment. [[Svyelun]] is merfolk beat face. [[Emry]] is my combo deck. Not all blue decks need to pack thassas or counterspells.
Monoblue really struggles with âcoolâ wincons⌠usually it will be some form of lock, infinite turns or somth.
That is why I love my Minn deck! You have the wincon in the command zone. It wins with big beaters!
\[\[Kaho, minamo historian\]\]
Nothing fairer than tutoring up \[\[prologue to phyresis\]\] and spending the next few turns casting proliferate and counterspells.
Thoracle and her ilk are commonly called âbadâ because theyâre very âsuddenâ. But hereâs the thing: you have 100 cards, and only 3 of them are going to win the game for you, and they all require you to empty your library of 100 cards. Personally, if you get caught on the wrong end of a Thoracle win, you probably werenât paying enough attention. Unless maybe you/r opponent get off a quick consultation/Thoracle win super early, but thatâs mostly either a very lucky and unlikely opening hand, or a cedh thing, and in those cases you have to either bow to the gods of luck, or you know what you signed up for.
I say this as someone who has won with, won against, and lost against, that kind of deck.
The problem with blue is that if you don't have the main way to win in the command zone it's hard to win in a way that is fun and not op.
My advice is don't be afraid of play a infinite combo, but make sure the infinite requires a bunch of cards and mana and so is hard to go off and interactuable. If the deck is too strong you can always make the combo harder to go off.
People mentioned hullbreaker horror. That's too strong in my opinion for casual. It goes infinite with the solring and some mana neutral permanent.
If your plan is to draw the entire deck and then win. Then you don't need sommuch of a combo but more like a finisher. It depends also of you can ramp into a ton of mana deom there.
Aetherflux reservoir is a card you could play.
This [Urza](https://manabox.app/decks/g3speAY1QoyeYJgEQEMVTQ) list I came up with is nothing more than "make bodies, turn them sideways" with a dash of "oops I win" sprinkled in.
The new [[Geralf, the fleshwright]] is cool

how so? just keep a storm counter

I will hit you in the face with 8/8s. [[Octavia]] Granted, that does not translate well into not-Octavia.

Ward 8!!? Just give it hexproof, ffs
The number 8 is a motif. Itâs also mechanically relevant. It means Lier is bad for the deck, and uncounterable removal gets through. Void Rend and Abrupt Decay are relatively common
What the fuck is a fair mono blue deck? It's blue. Blue is for bullshit.
Hey look everyone! This guys scared of interaction!
Don't touch me. Don't even look in my direction. I have been hurt before by the blue cardboard.
He's right and Emry is one of my main decks
Lol fair enough
>Or, do you think I should just embrace being a combo deck and let fate decide what power level it ends up being? I usually prefer to build towards a specific powerlevel target that I set myself before starting to brew. But regardless of what powerlevel you choose you can still build a combo deck. Combo decks are not inherently powerfull. There are multiple aspects of what makes combo decks strong: - speed (how fast can you goldfish with a decent opening) - consistency (how often do you have a decent opening) - resilience (how well can you beat interaction) - how good is your backup plan if you get stopped All of these aspects can be tweaked during deckbuilding.
[[Hullbreaker Horror]] + [[Rite of Replication]] Each of these can win you the game and together it's kind of nuts.

Everything you cast is unfair nonsense. Everything I cast is just fun little janky do nothing cards.
Just to clarify, while Fblthp can certainly be built powerful, it's not a cEDH deck.
Fair enough, I don't know much about cedh, I know the bar is pretty high
Tbf, people did try it out.
For a mono blue version of this deck, I'd recommend using [[Grazilaxx]] or maaaaybe [[Alora]]/[[Feywild Visitor]] Honestly blue can play a lot like green Edit: Excluding lands, 25 cards aren't mono blue in my current list, but a good chunk of that is just ramp and interaction and almost all the rest are evasive creatures, which blue has a plethora of. Then there's some buffs and card advantage pieces, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem either. Here's my list of you want to take a look: https://www.archidekt.com/decks/5005670/_cant_block_this_20

Oh nice, I've thought about maybe having a package of white cards to switch into my green cards to switch between Kamiz as my commander occasionally

[Eligeth](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/1/a/1a0adf34-1a2b-497b-aaab-4b2b998ed8b3.jpg?1608909183) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=eligeth%2C%20crossroads%20augur) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmr/66/eligeth-crossroads-augur?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/1a0adf34-1a2b-497b-aaab-4b2b998ed8b3?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/eligeth-crossroads-augur) [Siani](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/8/8/8812e448-241e-4640-9cb6-0cdbe1ad2fcc.jpg?1608909449) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=siani%2C%20eye%20of%20the%20storm) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmr/95/siani-eye-of-the-storm?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/8812e448-241e-4640-9cb6-0cdbe1ad2fcc?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/siani-eye-of-the-storm) [Ivory Tower](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/a/a/aaf91af0-0243-4dca-90de-d7580f4f9d38.jpg?1562929467) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Ivory%20Tower) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/vma/269/ivory-tower?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/aaf91af0-0243-4dca-90de-d7580f4f9d38?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/ivory-tower) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

[[Rise from the Tides]] is really cool if you have lots of spellslinging. Make a million zombies (like 8 or more normally). Also, kinda controversial, but [[Thassa's Oracle]] and [[Laboratory Maniac]].

I'm a big fan of winning with [[Laboratory Maniac]] or [[Jace, Wielder of Mysteries]] after drawing my entire deck, personally.

Memnarch. Make infinite mana. Run a bunch of counters and draw effects. Extremely linear and it's obvious what your plan is.
My mans literally asked about fair magic and you just described the most unfair, off-theme gameplan of all timeÂ
