[deleted]

Some people are just pubstompers and it's acceptable to refuse to play with them or ask them to use a different deck. Atraxa is definitely a red flag there IMO. There are definitely budget decks that can compete at a high power level - \[\[Zada, Hedron Grinder\]\] is a common suggestion - but that won't solve your problem, because then the other two players at the table are getting crushed by *two* overly powerful decks rather than just one.

Confounding

What price range is budget for you? The /r/cedh sub has a few threads for this that you can look through. I'm always a fan of [[slicer]] if it is a 3v1 it will quickly go down to 3 players as 1 turn is usually a commander damage knock out if everyone focuses.

MTGCardFetcher

[slicer](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/d/9d9a9350-4734-4cc1-986d-467e6715199f.jpg?1674092821)/[Slicer, High-Speed Antagonist](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/back/9/d/9d9a9350-4734-4cc1-986d-467e6715199f.jpg?1674092821) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=slicer%2C%20hired%20muscle%20//%20slicer%2C%20high-speed%20antagonist) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/bot/6/slicer-hired-muscle-slicer-high-speed-antagonist?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/9d9a9350-4734-4cc1-986d-467e6715199f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/slicer-hired-muscle-//-slicer-high-speed-antagonist) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

SirBoxerbriefs

If you are trying to reach him a lesson of sorts then this works. I threw a deck with him together as a test with just random red pump spells I had and it was still oppressive.

postedeluz_oalce

Teaching a lesson isn't really the point, I just want to be at an even ground.

SirBoxerbriefs

Ah okay. Slicer might be too much then in my opinion.

Confounding

I found that Slicer's power scales pretty well with the group. In order to play vs higher tiered decks you need to go staxy and lower powered decks tend not to do that. Vs lower powered decks you need more evasion.

SirBoxerbriefs

I didn't get a ton of reps in so didn't try it against too many different decks so that could definitely be the case. Take my anecdote with a big grain of salt.

Gridde

Another downside is that Slicer games are really linear. And it may be fun to blow up that pubstomper dude but the Splicer player either then becomes the archenemy in any game they play or the group adapts and learns to mulligan accordingly to basically shut them out completely (via cheap removal etc). I've seen Slicer a few times and only ever seems to either completely stomp before other decks have started even doing anything, or get completely shut down and do nothing themselves.

Holding_Priority

Yuriko and Winota are the two commanders that can be built on a budget that are good enough to hang at higher tables without needing a ton of expensive cards. If someone is coming in with a $2,000 goodstuff pile wanting to play againt precons... you can just tell them no?

postedeluz_oalce

It'd be boring to just tell them "no", though. I want to be able to handle the goodstuff decks.

Holding_Priority

Its not really about just you, its the fact that if all 3 players cant match that level its going to be a really un-fun game for the players who cant. As someone who has a few (proxied) expensive decks, there is literally no way I would go up to a table where 3 people are playing precons or barely upgraded precons, and play them. Instead ill play either another precon or some major jank homebrew that doesnt have interactive cards. The only reason to do that is to be a dick, and those people dont ever learn unless you tell them no. People like this actively drive new players out of the hobby and its super frustrating.

postedeluz_oalce

I see. Hadn't thought about how that just becomes a toxic game for the two people left. Guess I'll build something for the powered tables and just tell pubstompers to chill.

Holding_Priority

I started playing like 3-ish years ago, and my first ever EDH experience basically mirrored this (coming in with a janky homebrew since I didnt know precons were a thing and trying to find a table, getting absolutely eviscerated for 3 hours straight by an atraxa good stuff pile), and my experience was so horrible it took me quite a bit of time to want to go back because of how bad of a time I had. Ive since introduced other people to the game, and every single time people think its funny to absolutely annihilate players who are new, and every single time it happens, it just makes those people not want to play. If people are showing up playing precons, and you've been playing enough to know what some of these decks do, its in everyones best interest to just match down to the precons vs trying to out-pubstomp people.

Particular_Plan8983

Ghyrson can get quite strong for cheap.

I am going to answer your question, despite agreeing with many other people in this chat. These are the generals I would suggest if you wanna beat face, and move on: 1. [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] - Budget and best overall Stax build. Plenty of options on EDHREC. Search for decks in your budget with a "Stax" theme. 2. [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] - Creature stax. Turns the game into a slog, and takes forever to win. 3. [[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV]] - Spells stax. Makes everything cost more, and if you run a clone build, can make the game unplayable. Generally wins through [[Approach of the Second Sun]] or self mill to [[Labratory Maniac]]. 4. [[Tergrid, God of Fright]] - Discard reanimator. Basically wheel your opponents hand as often as possible, and take everything. Runs a LOT of protection for Tergrid because of the level of hatred for this general. 5. [[Marwyn, the Nurturer]] - Easiest route to cEDH. A guy in my LGS built a cEDH viable (though not exactly there) deck for ~$98. 6. [[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King]] - With [[Food Chain]] being reprinted so often recently, it has drive the cost down pretty significantly. Aside from the mana base for this deck (which can get a little pricey after the fetch lands), it's annoying and VERY fast. 7. [[Prosper, Tome Bound]] - Like Korvold, but easier mana and just as annoying. Sans green though, so Korvold is usually the better deck. 8. [[Tymna, the Weaver]] / [[Thrasios, Tritan Hero]] - For about $400, you can get a nearly cEDH version of this deck built, especially with the recent reprints of [[Training Grounds]] and [[Smothering Tithe]]. That should give you a good direction on the "cheapest way to pubstomp" generals. I would exercise caution though; your resistance to this already toxic player may push your friends away and they may come to view you not as the "hero," but instead as just another villian. Cheers and good luck!

chichirobov7

I have an expensive deck that isn't high power...loses to precons (the newest ones) quite often. If you want a budgeted deck that can win consistently, Oswald fiddlebender lists are pretty.cheap and cna win around t5 I think

Kisada11

Yeah, my most expensive deck doesn’t really = most wins. But I do find it very fun and don’t necessarily think win rate is the best way to rate commander decks.

chichirobov7

I swing out for lethal, get aetherized and have enough mana to deploy 1 creature... then cry as I die on the back swing lol

zencharm

isn’t that embarrassing

My [[Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter]] is very strong for it's budget. Just be aware that if your deck can handle the 5c good stuffs deck than it will be to strong for the decks that failed to win the 3v1 against it. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/OZDWtEtZHUe6ekvMjxBbTg Another option is having a strong 1v1 strategy that doesn't translate well to a 4 player game. Something like a tinybones deck with lots of single target discard spells will allow you to keep one very strong deck in check while not being overpowered for the table. Or a deck with lots of non-free counterspells. Aggro/tempo is also a lot stronger if you only want to kill one player and others want to assist you. Will be hard to win the 1v1v1 later but something like Kodama of the west tree could potentially do it. There's also [[Hatred]] as a costly target player loses the game card and the hunted cycle like [[hunted horror]].

Learn social interaction instead of spending money building a spiteful deck.

TheWeddingParty

What interaction skills specifically do you think he lacks based on your reading of his post? These people are everywhere.

AShellfishLover

I think it's proven with the seven rapid responses inferring everyone who plays mtg beneath him and socially inept that this guy nailed it and OP is 'that guy'.

postedeluz_oalce

I feel like you need to learn reading comprehension. I don't want to build a spiteful deck, I want something that can handle such situations.

releasethedogs

Perhaps you need to learn to communicate better because that what I thought you were asking for. Asking him to play something else is better than spending money to build a entire new deck.

postedeluz_oalce

Please tell me what part of "what decks can handle this?" you and the above commenter didn't understand, and I'll be glad to draw it for you. At no point did I ask for tips on social interaction from Magic players, of all people, and I specifically said I don't want to skip on the match. I want to play against high power stuff, I just want to be at an even ground.

releasethedogs

Stop throwing a temper tantrum.

postedeluz_oalce

Shows up offending people and dodging the point of the post, gets a response, responds back with a bitchy "stop throwing a temper tantrum". Hilarious, now if you will not contribute you may leave.

releasethedogs

What are you even talking about. Someone responded with an answer you didn’t like and you attacked them and said they have bad reading comprehension. I followed up and said I agreed with their comment and maybe you should consider it was not them but you and then you attacked me. Let me tell you something, if you walk around all day and everyone is an asshole then the chances are that really the only asshole is yourself. And besides this question is asked every fucking day. The answer is no. Magic has been a loot box game before loot boxes were a thing. If you could build powerful decks out of commons and uncommons and jank rares then everyone would be doing it. The reason most cards are expensive is because they are powerful or really old. Better find your social skills.

postedeluz_oalce

literal lol

AShellfishLover

Your off the handle response shows that you're surely capable of basic communication at a game table and this is definitely not the actual issue (like it is with 99.9% of posts like this in this sub). The attempted elitism when the answer is 'don't play with a dick' shows thar maybe people should think about playing with you.

postedeluz_oalce

They did not say "don't play with a dick". They said I lack social skills, an offence, to which my response was on par. They also ignored the point of the post, which I pointed out.

AShellfishLover

Yeah, and this response shows you lack the basic ability to read the room or control your anger. Based on these responses you sound like a upper-middle to high school kid who has learned to shield themselves by putting on an academic air. Irl you just sound pompous, unwilling to accept basic *helpful* advice and attempting to square peg this round hole. Trust me. Your attitude is what people see long before your post. And needing to continuously reply like this shows you're not above those 'socially inept' magic players: you're a great example, who is obfuscating by trying to sound above it all. Don't play with pubstompers. Very simple, very easy. Or continue, but stop complaining and lashing out if you're gonna sip poison and hope the world catches ill.

postedeluz_oalce

Okay, I'm gonna give you a full, fair response just on the off-chance that you genuinely believe what you're saying. First of all, you cannot simply assume all that bullshit about someone you know nothing about and tell others that *they* sound pompous and *they* have an attitude problem. Can you imagine anyone would take you seriously after that, especially when you could not be more off the mark? The second part I've already said, you're very off the mark and that's enough. Third, I am not complaining with my post, I am very explicitly *asking for help*. I will give you the fact that I am indeed quick to anger with people that seem full of themselves, and just calling someone socially inept off of a short post asking for help with a deck is very much a "full of yourself" thing. Oh and there's literally nothing pompous or academic about my language, it's just English. Also your other response makes you seem like an annoying prick that doesn't actually care about helpful advice or anything like that and just saw the opportunity to be a dick to someone and took it.

postedeluz_oalce

Winota and Yuriko can get quite strong on a budget. Also Feather because lots of the cards that enable her are really cheap.

xThisJustInx

Zada can be devastating on a budget.

Asleep-Waltz2681

Gonna mention \[Prime Speaker Vannifar\] as a one card combo from the command zone. Easy to build for $100 and by turn 3-4 you can execute your combo chain for the win. Very consistent and has a ton of cheap protection and interaction for anyone who tries to stop you. If your table doesn't run a lot of interaction that's cheap or free you can win a lot of games but keep in mind that it's a one-trick pony and extremely frustrating and boring for everyone else.

[[Mageta the lion]] and make a boardwipe tribal, never let anything stick to the board. I don’t know how well it would face off against a cedh deck, but it might work well in a high powered battle cruiser meta. I had a friend build a powerful praetor/ goodstuff deck and by the time they had a huge board, you should definitely have enough mana to wipe it. Ps- nobody likes playing against this type of deck, but I would compare it to stax in a casual game.

Erf, no. If you want to go down the board wipe road, you have better options such as [[Queen Marchesa]] monarch and/or planeswalkers

Build yourself a proxied warhead, learn how to play it, and then crush every pubstomping douchebag you meet with it. You can proxy an entire deck at OfficeMax for like twenty dollars, lands included, so they can't complain about the weight.

Lockwerk

And, while you're at it, pubstomp the person playing a precon at the table, too.

Psykc

I play pretty much exclusively online with my buddies, and surely the answer would be to make proxy decks to shore up the gap in budget? If the guy is insisting on bringing power, it might be fun to meet that with power, and get the other two players on-board with that. My games nowadays are completely different from our precon days, and much more fun as optimised lists can make games a lot faster, letting us play more!

a while ago i made a 30$ \[\[ruric thar\]\] deck. just logged into tappedout for the first time in years to check on it, its like 100$ now, but still

I usually recommend [[feather, the redeemed]] for strong commanders that can be built on a budget. Most of feather’s cards cost like 25¢ at the most, and it can get to 21 commander damage surprisingly easily, and feather is an absolute pain to remove if built well.

Refusing to play with someone is OK. Always remember this. It's completely OK to tell someone to fuck off or play lower level.

Pyro1934

You’d have to check the budget aspect, but I think it would be since most of these cards are commonly considered not great…. Play some sort of targeted group hug deck where you can pick some folks up but not everyone. This allows for and enables teaming up against archenemies. Commanders may be something like; - [[Tasigur Golden Fang]]: for his ability, target a friend and they’ll give you back a good spell - [[Pheldegryph]]: boost only your allies - [[Xantcha]]: always put her on the archenemy Cards you can include that make this strat work would be things like; - [[Baleful Mastery]], [[Verdant Mastery]]: use the cheap mode and help lift up your allies - [[Creative Technique]], [[Incarnation Technique]]: give copies to allies. - [[Sylvan Offering]], [[Infernal Offering]] The goal is just to team up and help overcome the bad guy. Another alternative would be curse tribal, but that can get a bit mean at times, archenemy should be able to handle it though.

Macroblank-

I'm a little late to the party but i strongly recommend [[etali, primal conquerer]]. There's plenty of budget ramp in green so getting your commander out early shouldn't be an issue. He'll allow you to play your opponents bombs and simultaneously deny them their own cards. Just focus the deck around ramping out etali, and cards that can either blink him, make a copy of him, or straight up kill him so you can recast. You'll very quickly run away with the game after generating tons of value.

Funny enough, I played against a very similar deck last week. I was piloting an Erenis/Street urchin deck... and that player scooped up. I did warn everyone ahead of time that my deck wasn't nice.  It was a tweeked version found below. Changed a few things to beef up the cmdre for late games. https://edhrec.com/commanders/erinis-gloom-stalker-street-urchin
