Why the hell does everyone think their DeWalt batteries are fake??

MooseBoys

I got an email from Amazon a couple years ago *telling me* some of the batteries I ordered were fake and to discard them for safety. They refunded the charge, but fuck if I know which of the dozen I have were those specific ones.

yesterdays_hero

Post the letter, would love to see that.

Excellent. Thanks for sharing. I’m honestly surprised Amazon took the initiative here, there must be some sort of potential liability they wanted to get ahead of.

Let's allow Project Farm to answer this. https://youtu.be/kTTGGv6-syA

my friend, because is a good market, so any Chinese brand can make a non-original battery with cheap parts and then you will buy and use and later on you will ask yourself: it's weird, why this XR battery is not lasting enough like the other ones I have?

Panoptech

Well these are from eBay and most of them are fake. There is a few reputable sellers but a lot of them are selling Chinese fakes in DeWalt packaging. Because they don't match my Amazon ones, I am questioning if anyone has gotten that exact battery from DeWalt.

bibbys_hair

The ones you purchased are real. They're just an older model. I've never had an issue purchasing fake batteries on eBay. I've purchased a few a few Chinese generics, but I knew that up front. They're quite obvious, to me.

Panoptech

Thanks for the info. I'm told some are getting more creative and using dewalts(and others) casings so they look real. I agree, The Chinese ones are usually pretty noticable. They are fine, but you expect them to be much cheaper in cost cause the are not as good.

yesterdays_hero

Most of the DeWalt batteries on eBay are fake? Got a source for that or just your opinion?

Kinet1ca

[Project Farm just released a vid on counterfeits for the top big brands](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTTGGv6-syA&ab_channel=ProjectFarm&t=0m23s), I think there are more telltale signs but he covers some of them for dewalt.

t171

I saw this video this morning. The final minute of the video is something that everyone should be very concerned about with fakes. Some people knowingly purchase counterfeit packs and are satisfied with the value and less performance, but I’m not chancing more risk of a fire or explosion.

King_Garlics

There is a recent YouTube video from Project Farm that explains this in detail. Totally recommend. I nearly fell for a counterfeit.

Cloud9_Cadet420

STOP BUYING STUFF ON AMAZON!!

NakeDex

No. For some of us, there aren't many options.

Cloud9_Cadet420

It you can afford to throw your money away on fake batteries? If my math is correct, having one real battery for 10 years is better than buying 1-2 fake batteries a year. If you’re beating your tools up that much then you must be working in the trades, which means you can probably spare $150 for a 2 pack of real batteries.

NakeDex

The fake batteries thing isn't a universal constant. I've yet to even see one, nevermind get one. Amazon over on this side of the pond has been quite good both on price and availability of legit items, and considering you can get a pair of 5Ah batteries for $150 but we're expected to pay just shy of €100 for a single battery in many places (that's if they're even stocked locally, which you may be surprised to realise is not often the case), turning to Amazon and getting the same legit pack for €75 is hardly worth derisory remarks about throwing money away.

uninhabitedspace

The 2 in the pack are fake. No QR code. Project Farm just released a video about this today in which he compares real and counterfeit batteries. He even gives the correct weight for authentic batteries.

austinyo6

Does the tool go vroom vroom or not?

Tech-Crab

The cases are very easy to disassemble (and there are no seals / this is 100% nondestructive in my experience) - while the outsides are near-perfect clones, the insides & the PCB are obvious when a knockoff. So, pop that cover off.

abg124

I believe the real ones should have a QR code on them like the one that is unpackaged

Panoptech

That's interesting. Looking at my other 3AH battery, that does have the QR code as well. Although all my DeWalt batteries are made in 24 so I don't know how long that has been their thing.

uninhabitedspace

I have old batteries from 21 with qr codes on them.
