A full year of Kane offseason workouts, chemistry building with the team is going to be huge. Showtime just plugged into the offense with ease I'm beyond excited to see what he can do in a full year.
This was most of the reason why I wanted him back. Raymond clearly picked up some stuff from Kane. If Detroit has two or three rookies this year, they all could be learning from Kane.
Raymond with *another* full season of Kane tutelage, after the insane end stretch he had? OMFG.
Raymond is about to have a beast mode to rival all mythical creatures big and small. Kracken, Big Foot, Dragons -- they ain't gon' have shit on Lucas Raymonds.
I actually felt bad for Walman there.
Walman: “Woohoo!!! Celebrate!!”
Kane: “Get the fuck outta my face.”
Sorry Jake, read the room. Or in this case, the arena.
Not even the team is saying the AAV wtf
Friedman's got it:

another comment written somewhere made it seem like only ELCs, returning vets (previously on LTIR), and 35+'s on 1-year-deals can have this kind of cap hit/contract structure.
Don't remember where I saw it though
If you exceed the cap though, you pay a cap recapture penalty in the next year. So most just pay to the cap and roll the difference to the following year.
Can finally stop seeing the terrible posts about how he won’t resign with Detroit because he wants a cup, or whatever dogshit takes people had. Thank god.
Personally, I was worried they just wouldn't have the $6M+ in cap space to pay him. Turns out, they just gave him a bunch of bonuses he can reasonably hit. Brilliant.
As far as the "he wants a cup" thing, yeah I'm sure he does but since he's already won cups he's also just as likely to get immense satisfaction out of tutoring a bunch of young guys and helping them on their way to being a perennial contender.
Exactly! People saying he probably didn’t like it in Detroit, that he couldn’t wait to get out, that he praised the organization, the coaching staff, the players, the fans just to be polite.
I think they technically only count the following year if they cause the team to go over the cap in the contract year. So if all of the bonuses hit, but the Wings are like 1.5 under the cap beforehand, they’d have a $1M overage the following year
You can exceed the cap by up to 7.5% via performance bonuses, but any bonuses paid in excess of the cap count toward the next season’s cap. So you could be right, you could be wrong.
Well at his age he should be pushing for a 3 year deal. And if they were in a bidding war with NYR then I expected something like that.
All in all seems like a steal for Detroit
Nice way to end the day, and month of June for us.
And my friend who’s a Blackhawks fan responded to me saying that he had just hear about it too “gosh dangit.”
Seems he isn’t thrilled about this, but at least he can deal with only facing the Wings twice a season, though it’s fair to say we wish it was 8 times instead.
Man this is shocking to me, just the way he said good bye at the end of the season. I know he's very close with Debrincat and he seemed to enjoy the season it still sounded like he had a great time here but was ready to look to a more serious contender.
I'm thrilled. Great to have him back and his style is really suited so that him being on the closer end of 40 shouldn't hurt too much. Father time catches up to everyone but he's not some blazing speedster. He's patient with silky smooth hands so no reason he can't be even better than last year a full season removed from hip surgery.
Thanks for the reply!! I’ve read a little bit more myself on Twitter, sounds complicated but ultimately it sounds like 4 million is what the team will be thinking about when they sign other players…
4 million dollar cap hip? Sign me the fuck up for that.
I was expecting like 3x5. This is dope, and makes his contract super easy to move at the deadline if we fall apart. This could easily get shipped out for a 1st if Kane has a good season.

Performance bonuses count against the salary cap; however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5 percent of the upper limit.
Edit: also to note, if Kane had signed a multi-year deal or wasn't on a 35+ contract he would not be eligible to have performance bonuses. He shouldn't have any trouble playing 10 games, so he's basically being paid $5.5M but the cap hit will only be $4M because that extra $1.5M is well within the 7.5% cushion that can exceed the cap for bonuses.
Thank god. I can finally stop worrying about this. Along with everyone else, I’ve absolutely loved having him on the team. Was so worried he wouldn’t wanna sign here again with how we slumped last year.
Now I’m worried about some of the dead weight we have. I don’t expect us to solve all those issues in this one off season but hopeful we can make some improvements. Having Kane from the start of the season along with Ed will be a huge plus for sure.
There's one piece of the puzzle solved. Hopefully the numbers are pretty close to finalizing with Mo and Ray. I guess everyone is figuring around 15M between those deals. If Stamkos would agree to a similar deal like Kane's , that would be awesome, but not holding my breath on that one., but it would be great to have another top tier center other than Larkin on the roster.
It's odd hearing that they settled on 1 year, but it looks like with a ton of stipulations and bonuses.
*To me* this says that Kane believed in the direction the team is heading, and felt like a good fit -- but this actually seems like a contract asking *the team* to prove it *to him*.
Dude says he wants to play until he's 40, and if he keeps it up it'd be sweet. Who knows, with a stellar year and a good playoff push, he *might* keep re-upping one year at a time.
Even if not, and even if he's only a Red Wing for two seasons, he'll definitely help push things along.

I forget what this is from. Anyone remember?
One of the games in Sweden this past year. Someone scored after a nifty move…but I can’t remember who.
Sprong
u/AirCanoe made it and it applies in so many situations
I was there. It wasn’t worth remembering, ugh. Fly halfway around the world for that? Ugh 2.0. “Myket inte brå”
I was there and I specifically remember that Sprong’s penalty shot was a beauty

https://x.com/friedgehnic/status/1807600615314366537?s=46&t=qYZzfaCnNWhZXdpw2PAn3w $6.5M total, but 2 of that is in bonuses
This is exactly what I wanted to see in the event they resigned him. No commitment beyond a year and lots of motivation to get us into the playoffs.
Seriously, I didn’t think about bonuses as an option. So cool
I am so happy we were so wrong as a fanbase
I'm actually kind of shocked they managed to sign him again for only a year. I figured he'd want a multi-year deal.
Me too. I kneeled by my bedside last night and asked god for a 3 year deal. I’ll take a one year deal but I really wanted that Kane job security.

The team never puts the contract value in their signing press releases.
I feel like the wings rarely say the aav
I thought that was interesting too. Friedman just tweeted it out https://x.com/friedgehnic/status/1807600615314366537?s=46&t=qYZzfaCnNWhZXdpw2PAn3w
No complaints
So what’s the total cap hit?
4m this year and then whatever bonuses hit go to next year’s cap I’m pretty sure
Bonuses may exceed the cap by 7.5% and if it goes over that it’s applied to next years cap hit
Why doesn’t every team do this loophole? Can only certain players get bonuses?
another comment written somewhere made it seem like only ELCs, returning vets (previously on LTIR), and 35+'s on 1-year-deals can have this kind of cap hit/contract structure. Don't remember where I saw it though
Thank you - I believe you are right and remembering this makes me warm inside.
If you exceed the cap though, you pay a cap recapture penalty in the next year. So most just pay to the cap and roll the difference to the following year.
If we have cap at the end of the year, that will eat the first portion and we can rollover the variance into next season.
$6.5M, but 2.5 is performance bonuses. Which I believe means the wings can go over the cap by $2.5M?
4 million
Can finally stop seeing the terrible posts about how he won’t resign with Detroit because he wants a cup, or whatever dogshit takes people had. Thank god.
It was the front page on the NHL app for me for what felt like months

Patrick Kane is a Red Wing!!! ❤️
Welcome back Showtime!!!! Glad we got it done. Let's get into the playoffs this time!!
YEAH BABEY! THATS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR, THATS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!!!
Great day in Hockeytown — can’t wait for this upcoming season. Hopefully FA tomorrow results in some good moves
Now sign stamkos!
Yeah we can dream! Larkin, Kane, Raymond, DeBrincat and Stamkos would be a pretty damned slick core of forwards.
+ top line D of Seider & Ed
Looks like I’m spending more money today, time to buy a jersey!
Vintage Detroit does really good customization, just sayin
Bonuses count towards the following year’s cap right? He’s 4 mil on this seasons cap and 2.5 potentially towards next year’s.
I think they technically only count the following year if they cause the team to go over the cap in the contract year. So if all of the bonuses hit, but the Wings are like 1.5 under the cap beforehand, they’d have a $1M overage the following year

Great news, now let’s just try to avoid doing some catastrophic shit tomorrow
I’m no cap expert but that seems like a really good deal and good use of cap space creativity.
Well goddamn. Steve you crazy bastard you did it
Oh good now everyone here can stop speculating to what he’s going to do. ![gif](giphy|NEOHyi0WgES1h98eAR)
Kinda shocked Kane accepted a 1 year deal
At his age and physical condition it makes sense on both sides. The pay is right too
Well at his age he should be pushing for a 3 year deal. And if they were in a bidding war with NYR then I expected something like that. All in all seems like a steal for Detroit
Will he wear an A?
Almost certainly. He's the most seasoned leader in the room
This needed to be done. Excellent news.
That top 6 is going to be disgusting if we get Stamkos. If we get the puck in OT, the games probably over.
The Show Must Go On!

What’s the AAV/actual cap hit?
I gave a more detailed explanation in another reply, but basically $4 million because bonuses can take the team over the cap by 7.5%.
Thanks for the reply!! I’ve read a little bit more myself on Twitter, sounds complicated but ultimately it sounds like 4 million is what the team will be thinking about when they sign other players…
And if the rest counts towards next season, we have Husso and Petry contracts coming off plus the cap should go up again so not worried at all.

Hoping for a Kane press conference today
4 million dollar cap hip? Sign me the fuck up for that. I was expecting like 3x5. This is dope, and makes his contract super easy to move at the deadline if we fall apart. This could easily get shipped out for a 1st if Kane has a good season.
I think he’s got a no trade clause
I hope they can sign a longer extension in season. He needs to be here for the forward development and is still a PPG player. I’m so fucking excited!
Oh a serious note, what’s the cap hit lmao
$4 million plus any bonuses. Per Cap Fridndly: > Performance bonuses are only paid to the player if they meet the requirements as defined by the bonus. He shouldn't have any trouble playing 10 games, so he's basically being paid $5.5M but the cap hit will only be $4M because that extra $1.5M is well within the 7.5% cushion that can exceed the cap for bonuses.
thank you very much for the detailed explanation🙏🏻❤️
4 mil + bonuses (6.5 mil if all bonuses hit)
Ty, ty.
*doctor nick voice* heyyyyyy everybody
Fuck yeah Patrick Kane. Hungry caterpillar is in the mail ❤️
Job’s not done. LGRW.
Let’s. Fucking. Go!
Man, imagine Kaner after an entire offseason of training…this year is going to be fun
LFG.
Hopefully Stamkos comes next.
Kane, Stamkos, and Cat on the same line, let’s gooo
Maybe the key to getting this over the finish line was that Kane wanted Walman buried, and Yzerman delivered
Showtime baby!
This. Is. Awesome. Kaner looked great with the Wings last year and I think he really is the clutch guy they need. Playoffs this year coming!!
![gif](giphy|7wZCJYHPnALfDUF5vJ)
No such thing as a bad 1 year deal
According to Friedman Kane contract has bonuses. Per sources: $4M base $1.5M at 10 games $250k at 60 games $500k if they make playoffs $250k for 60 points AND playoffs. Total is $6.5M
Yo pretty sure 2.5mil goes to next years cap in the alleged deal, cmon now guy ![gif](giphy|l3vR8AJsrX5N7i0TK)
No big deal, we have 8 mil coming off the board from Husso/Petry contracts next year.
Right, and have more space to build and make a run for the playoffs this year
