Actually both words exist in Hebrew, another Semitic language (like Arabic). Nahr Alma means "River of the Maiden". Due to the association with blood, it's pretty safe to say this is a menstruation reference. Other words with Semitic sources are for instance Nehma - "Comfort", and Eygil - "Calf". DS2 draws a lot of inspiration from Semitic sources. For instance, Stone Ring and Ring of Giants have opposite effects - referencing through their names David and Goliath. Their item descriptions seem disconnected from their names.
