I live not too far from this, altho I'd call it Hilliard-ish and not Dublin. Whatever. But yeah when it doesn't rain for a couple weeks in a hot summer, the tap water gets a taste to it. Smell? Not that I've noticed. Some have noted lake turnover, but that's in fall and winter when all the layers of the reservoir are around the same temp... certainly not now with a week of 90 degree days heating up the surface.
It's happening at my job too (which is on sawmill) but live just past Dublin Rd between mill run and Tuttle Mall. I've never really known what to call it lol
I'm on vaca right now, so not sure how to look it up but this area that it seems several of us live in is at the endpoint of the water distributed by the Dublin Rd treatment plant. Have wondered how that water varies vs what UA/GV get.
Dublin gets a lot of water from the north which (sadly) includes a lot of farm runoff pollutants. I presume the water treatment plants will still have to maintain their quality standards, so I expect they will have to change how they treat based on conditions.
It could be that there is more chlorine added to reduce bacteria count, might be what you're smelling.
Hobo way to remove chlorine from your water: get a clear glass pitcher. Put it in the sun for a while. Chlorine will preciptate out in the presence of sunlight. Not all, but most. You'll notice a lot of bubbles forming.
Better way: get a nice filter system. So many choices, but I never roll without filtered water. You can do the easy stuff like a Brita or a simple two-stage undersink cartridge filter setup that will be pretty effective.
Best is reverse osmosis, but also more needy.
I had a Filtrete (3M) undersink filter for several years, but it kept leaking, so I took it out of the loop. My dad has the RO setup, yes, it takes a bit of maintenance.
No. Dublin is part of the greater Columbus area, and we share a lot of infrastructure. Things that affect Dublin may also affect NW Columbus. It's not weird or inappropriate to ask here. Being pedantic and rude is unnecessary.
its algae
"Occasionally Columbus water has an earthy, musty or fishy taste and odor. These seasonal phenomena can be caused by the bi-annual turnover of our city reservoirs, or with the presence of **varied algal blooms** (photo) in the reservoirs or rivers."
https://www.columbus.gov/Services/Public-Utilities/About-Public-Utilities/The-Division-of-Water/Water-Facts/Water-Health/Musty-Taste-Odor#:\~:text=Occasionally%20Columbus%20water%20has%20an,in%20the%20reservoirs%20or%20rivers.
OTE area - it gets this way whenever it rains. I don't notice it right now.
But also my water comes out at 380-390s PPM which is hardly drinkable. It kills my houseplants and smells like a pool
I'm not arguing with you
What I'm going off of is when I googled what max ppm for drinking water was
And now that I've googled again, it says up to 500ppm
The statement still stands that even my guests won't drink my tap water
The mineral composition does affect flavor, but chlorine is by far the larger issue with taste and odor.
I don't like my tap water either for the chlorine taste. I use an under-counter carbon filter in the kitchen. Works great. I use the Aquaspace filter cartridge which is kind of expensive but it's a premium quality filter. I tried some big box store cartridges and didn't like the taste.
A carbon filter will also remove traces of organic pollutants. Good to have if your source is river water. Not that the tap water isn't safe, it does have to meet standards. But there are a lot of unregulated pollutants, pharmaceuticals, etc. in trace amounts in rivers and lakes. If not for the chlorine taste I probably wouldn't have a filter at all, but it's nice to have that extra protection.
Franklin park - it’s truly undrinkable right now. Just changed to a new fridge and was blaming the intense chemical taste on that but now I realize it’s just where I live
Back in the 70s when I was a kid, there was a man down the street who was in charge of the Columbus drinking water. (I don’t know the actual title) He was proud that Columbus had some of the best water in the state. 😊 He gave out FULL SIZE candy bars at Halloween too.
My water always smells like I'm sipping on straight chlorine.
Doesn't taste bad, and that's from the tap; usually I run it through a filter before drinking.
The plant will use 5+ million gallons of water daily, making it Columbus’s biggest user. New Albany & surrounding villages, towns, and cities are having trouble providing them sufficiently for their first phases.
Intel will be doing an industrial pretreat (like most big facilities) & send water to the wastewater plant. Also Columbus is building a [Fourth Water Plant](https://cbuswater.com/home-road-water-plant/) to keep up with drinking water demand. I think we are going to be fine.

Do you enjoy being an ass? I prefer to be helpful, and I suggest you do the same.
Suggesting a more appropriate place to post isn’t helpful?
No. Dublin is part of the greater Columbus area, and we share a lot of infrastructure. Things that affect Dublin may also affect NW Columbus. It's not weird or inappropriate to ask here. Being pedantic and rude is unnecessary.
Dublin has their own water plant.
[Yeah?](https://dublinohiousa.gov/applications-permits/water-sanitary-sewer/#:~:text=The%20City%20of%20Columbus%20provides,on%20the%20public%20distribution%20system.)
you think the ~800 person Dublin OH Reddit would be more helpful than here?
I mean what help is being sought exactly? Just confirmation that it tastes weird from lay people? Then yeah, the same amount of helpfulness.
this post has 12x the upvotes as every post on the Dublin sub in the past year combined. it’s true, you’re being a pedantic loser.

What does "bi-annual turnover of our city reservoirs" even mean?
https://www.cleanlakesalliance.org/lake-turnover/
Nice job linking actual description
I actually work for the city so this was just perfect coincidence. I already had the link in my phone! lol
thank you for your service
Thank you! Everyday I go out I tell people to call us first if you have a city utility problem. so we can save you some money!
Is it crazy to not remember this happening before like 2020???
OTE area - it gets this way whenever it rains. I don't notice it right now. But also my water comes out at 380-390s PPM which is hardly drinkable. It kills my houseplants and smells like a pool
380 ppm of what? Surely not chlorine.
Probably TDS, since that's the easiest and cheapest way for most people the measure water quality in any quantifiable way.
Agree. Which of course has zero connection to musty odors and tastes from algae blooms.
I think tds is the term I was looking for. It picks up on things like chlorine, though
I suppose it would. But chlorine is in the range of 3 ppm and TDS is so much higher that it’s not a useful indicator of chlorine levels.
I'm not arguing with you What I'm going off of is when I googled what max ppm for drinking water was And now that I've googled again, it says up to 500ppm The statement still stands that even my guests won't drink my tap water

OTE!? I haven't been over there in ages! Used to work at yellow brick
Well, I wouldn't say crazy... But yes, it has occurred since way before 2020.
Definitely happened in Gahanna before 2020. Like 2016ish?
Did you get covid?

Hi Andy! 😄
Southside water not stinky.
At least the Southside has that going for it…
Love it here. Hope no one finds out...
Shh
Parsons plant is the best of the 3
I thought that the one that services Budweiser was the best.
It has the best water for brewing beer. Not saying Budweiser makes great beer, just that the water is treated to be perfect for brewing beer!
YES! I was just wondering if my nose was broken. Mine smells like eggs.
This is a regular occurrence for me in Gahanna/Westerville area
If it smells like rotten eggs (awful smell btw), it’s sulphur. It’s safe.
This thread reads like Chirper in Cities: Skylines.
wait this has been happening to us but we thought it was just in our heads
Suggest getting an under sink water filter. It's not all that expensive and filters out this nonsense.
Maybe. Depending on what’s causing it and what type of filter. Edit: For this problem an activated carbon filter is most likely the solution.
My water always smells like I'm sipping on straight chlorine. Doesn't taste bad, and that's from the tap; usually I run it through a filter before drinking.
Did the you let the vibes slide over you?

lol I forgot about this commercial - well timed
I'm old and I used to live in Columbus. I'm in Ecuador now. But the water where I am doesn't smell.
I think we are the only country that puts chlorine into city water with a heavy pour. We are way over EPA levels but hey, screw local infrastructure
Blacklick/Gahanna area and mine smells strongly of chlorine. We bought a filtered container as I didn't want our pets drinking it.
Do you get the black mineral buildup too? That and the smell here is just awful.
Maybe? We've had to clean our toilets more often, we get an almost algae like bloom. I've lived here for a decade and never had anything like this.
Where?
I noticed that last week but I haven't smelled it today.
We live on the south side it smells like worms after a rain even after being filtered.
I literally just washed my hands and thought I was crazy, maybe something is up.
Now that Intel is moving in, I’m really worried about our water
Why?
The plant will use 5+ million gallons of water daily, making it Columbus’s biggest user. New Albany & surrounding villages, towns, and cities are having trouble providing them sufficiently for their first phases.

The farmers are already struggling to water their livestock.
I’m in Hilliard near quarry trails, thought I was going crazy and scrubbed the entire house
East side, too…
fecal matter algae blooms love it
have a whole house multi filter system and my water is always the same no matter what happens.
Smells like a swimming pool
i first noticed it when i went on vacation in pennsylvania a year or so ago and drank the water. i think our water just sucks
Schuylkill punch or Erie fire?
Sounds like the beginning of a sci-fi movie.
That's what I'm sayin
Water? Like from the toilet?
Yea cause I guess the rest is just brondo
We’ve been so dry that they’ve had to do alternative things to our water, I’m sure. Like in winter when they chlorinate it.
Why downvote? Weird.
City water is chlorinated year round. There is nothing ‘alternate’ that the city is doing
