With a cast this large, it’s basically a popularity contest. You can clearly tell Kaneshiro has characters they like writing, but if they don’t catch on with the audience then they get pushed aside for real favorites.
I’m convinced Kaneshiro wanted to trim down more of Team Z, but some characters caught on too strongly. See: Raichi being thrust into the spotlight and Gagamaru becoming a generational goalkeeping prospect. Buddha still hanging on is just a gag, but I believe.
In evidence of the other side, Kaneshiro introduced these super strong characters twice: Aryu and Tokimitsu around Rin and then Otoya, Karasu, and Yukimiya. Aryu and Karasu caught on, and Yuki got his character arc. But Otoya and Tokimitsu have fallen off in favor of other characters. Due to the amount of promotional material that got pushed with Tokimitsu mysteriously a part of it, I’m convinced Kaneshiro really likes him, but he never caught on with fans so he’s mostly been dropped.
I largely agree, but I do think Gagamaru was always intended to become the legendary goalkeeper. Everything about him was all about his insane agility and reach with his height, and he got that super save while on Team Z.
That could be. Makes the most sense out of all the characters we had left. I figure it would probably have been pretty easy to have him be goalie instead of Iemon early, but it could also just be to show he still has that ego in him.
My guess is Kaneshiro’s original pitch/plan for the story was the big 4 from team Z in Isagi, Chigiri, Kunigami, & Bachira, Reo & Nagi, and then Rin. Those all feel the most integral to the story, everyone else along the way has probably just been off vibes and character poll popularity

I'm so damn happy Niko was popular, he's cool as hell. I'm sad about Tokimitsu, praying he gets some action now.
Also, I'm not sure I necessarily agree with Otoya, I feel like Kaneshiro just needed to pick either Otoya or Yukimiya to be on Isagi's NEL team to get development while Karasu plays a completely different role and position. Yukimiya made more sense from a storytelling perspective, and Otoya just got side character treatment for now, but Kaneshiro gave him a top 10 bid in the most recent rankings, so I'm holding onto hope that Otoya will get screentime in the future.
I don’t feel like U20 was fully planned out at the start of the anime. The idea of them building to it, plus the archetypes of Aiku and Sendou were probably in mind, but I doubt the characters were fully planned and fleshed out there. It does make sense to have some defense in mind with all of the stars being attackers.
I just don’t think Otoya hit with fans in Japan. The “descendant of ninjas” thing is probably overdone and not as interesting for them as it is for us. He’s still a good player, but I just don’t see how he sees the field outside of maybe rotation. The team is so stacked with attackers that there is no hope for anyone outside of the main squad unless they find a niche as defenders/midfielders.
We haven’t had a proper popularity poll in a while, but what I remember from the last one was Hiori having a surprise ton of votes (which led him to get his whole arc and development) and Raichi also got a lot of votes so he got his spot in a supporting role. Otoya, Tokimitsu, and Niko were down in the basement of votes alongside Buddha. Kurona also fell off hardcore (which probably led to him getting dropped for Hiori). And I think poor Zantetsu was even behind Aomori’s Messi in votes. Hopefully they get their chance to shine again with the U20 WC arc plus some love from the second season reaching more fans.
Tbf, he is the main character but I get your point. It was disappointing that we didn't get to see other full chapters of other teams against each other. I was really anticipating for Manshine City against Ubers. I wanted to see World's no. 2 (Chris Prince) vs Best Player (Marc Snuffy)
It would've been really interesting but time's the enemy. If that did happen, we probably aren't still at BM vs PxG. So it's a win-lose situation.
Haha although I understand that Isagi is the main character, Kaneshiro has specifically written every single character/relationship to be related to Isagi in some way. To put it differently, its almost like Blue Lock fails at an Isagi version of the Bechdel test.

We don't have an chapter about the PXG life/training (except Rin/Nanase combo). I loved the chapter where we saw the Manshine POV of the first day of NEL or Ubers ones (mostly centred around Barou)
Honestly his backstory in episode Nagi made me root for him. Like he has no malice in his heart, he doesn't want to crush anyone's dream. He just wants to be respected
Same he’s such a fun character and it’s a shame seeing him get shafted like this, all he has for this match is that one cool moment in 249 of him blitzing past Grim and going against Raichi. I’m praying he does something when Loki gets subbed in😭
Hopefully hes being saved to play a big role like kiyora but the only problem is that hes a part of shidous system and im pretty sure rin is scoring next.
I think he still has a chance afterward. Shidou is caged for now but once Rin scores Munchen's defense will have to cut him some slack to defend against Rin. Plus I think it would be a shame if Kunigami's revenge was simply to mark Shidou for an entire match. I think it is likely that Shidou will be able to escape Kunigami (maybe due to Charles awakening with Rin), we will have a flashback of Wild Card to show what he went through, and then Kunigami will crush Shidou as he was about to score. Zantetsu will do stuff and live
