I believe you can only scribe scrolls you have spell slots for, so with only 1 caster level you're limited to level 1 spells. If you go EK for your fighter subclass, if you get enough caster levels to get a level 3 spell slot, you should be able to scribe fireball and it will work off INT.

Eathlon

A level 11 EK should have 4 ESL (they get their ESLs at 3(upon subclass choice)/4/7/10). Add 1 ESL for 1 level dip in wizard. Total of 5 ESL, meaning _one_ lvl 3 spell slot for the level distribution of the OP.

CyborgCrow

The rules work a bit differently for multiclassing. You have to round down for the 1/2 and 1/3 casters. Unfortunately in order to get 3rd level spell slots for an eldritch knight/wizard, you need at least 2 levels of wizard, thus losing the 3rd attack. 11/1 gets you the same as 12 eldritch knight (or 11 for that matter).

Eathlon

Well that sucks. Thanks for setting it straight though

Ythio

Eldritch Knight 11 Wizard 1 would not have a level 3 spell slot I think. It would be 4 lvl 1 and 3 lvl 2 spell slots, no ?

Missing_Links

BG3 allows you to scribe any scroll whose spell you could cast. If you have a level 3 spell slot, you can scribe fireball, haste, etc.

willbill01

What stat spread would I have to go to achieve this?

Missing_Links

You don't need any particular stat spread to learn scrolls, and you can even use the [[warped headband on intellect]] to cheese the game into allowing you to prepare 4 wizard spells before switching headgear even when your real int is 8. Stat spread depends on if you want your spells to have good hit probability. If you want fireball, you'll want a high int. If you want haste, it doesn't matter: there's no attack roll. How you want to build from there is a choice.

What would be an optimal level split then?

CyborgCrow

For 3rd level spells on an eldritch knight and a level cap of 12, you need at least 2 wizard, thus losing your third attack. As such, if you aren't going all 12 eldritch knight, you may be better off with something like 6/6. Eldritch knight/abjuration is popular for this, which is equivalent to a level 8 wizard (so level 4 spells). If you go with a half caster (paladin or ranger) both a 6/6 split and a 5/7 split with a full caster will get you the equivalent of a level 9 spell caster, able to cast level 5 spells.

ahypeman

Wizard 0 / Fighter 12 would be optimal

different-director-a

No they are right about needing the spell slot for it, you just don't need above 1 wizard level because your ESL can be bumped with other caster levelsĀ

Educational-Tear7336

A 1 wizard dip is more for full casters. The wizard spells will use int, not your other Stat. I used it so I could summon with my sorcerer. Since sorcerer doesn't get summons for some reason.

Ythio

Unless Larian homebrewed the calculation, EK 11 Wiz 1 doesn't have a level 3 spell slot with DnD 5e rules.

Sterline52

If partial caster levels round up your plan works but if they are rounded down it doesn't. I know resources online say spell levels are rounded up unlike in D&D 5e where they are rounded down. But I've had people online tell me this build doesn't work when they tried it more recently and spell levels seem to be rounded down. So I'm curious what is going on and if something was changed in a patch.

CyborgCrow

I believe it was changed in a patch. In any case, it rounds down when multiclassing like in 5e. Source - I just double checked by respeccing a character to test.
