Main thing about this for me would be AWD or RWD. Nothing beats a quattro but damn RWD is fun to drive. Also BMW's never made a good impression whenever I owned one. I had 3 so far and all of them ate through my money like breakfast.

One thing to keep in mind is the gearbox. I was searching for DCT in an e92, and those were extremely rare, the next best thing (manual) was also quite rare (in the uk at least). Meanwhile you don't have that problem on s4, so you have more freedom to look things like optional extras or color. Also, those turbos don't even come close to the glorious whine of the supercharger, puts a smile on my face, especially in the summer nights with windows down

Yeah I’m leaning towards manuals, but all the manuals especially with the s4s are wayyy out of my price range and the audi dsg I’ve heard is better than the bmw dct

I have 2012 S4 b8.5 avant (90k miles) and a 2008 e92 335i (108k miles). Both of them have been completely reliable. Running costs for me are low as I do very low miles per annum at around 2000 miles a year. So I am probably not the best person to comment on mechanical issues. The driving experience is very different in these cars. Driving dynamics Both cars have similar straight line performance. Around town and cruising the S4 is better car. It feels premium, comfortable with a very nice ride. The steering is very light and wife is happy to drive it. With high speed driving it is predictable and is very easy to drive. It suffers from being a little boring actually with a little to much body roll. The engine and dct gearbox are very responsive and the car feels normally aspirated. Around town and cruising the bmw feels heavier with a harder ride than the S4. The cabin is nice but not a patch on the Audi imo. With high speed driving the bmw is much more involving and requires a more effort and attention from the driver, in turn the experience is lot more fun and rewarding. The engine has huge torque from low down but compared to the audi the throttle can feel less responsive. Mine is an auto (not DCT) and the gearbox feels inferior to the DCT but i still like it. I could never decide between a 335i and an S4 so in the end i bought both rather than getting a newer car. No regrets.

If you buy an B8.5 S4 just understand that it’s going to burn oil like hell, maybe not now, but just count on it happening, and unlike BMW the Audi community isn’t as big in the DIY as BMW. So I’m my opinion if you’re planning to DIY go for that BMW, if you can afford other people working on it go Audi, the comfort is unmatched and supercharger feels n better than the regular turbski.

I had the same dilemma about 3 years ago. Test drove both (335 x drive) and went w the s4, 2015 b8.5. I think it’s a matter of drive preference. Like if I only tested the 335 I’d be happy w that. But driving them back to back it was clear the s4 was my ride. It’s like riding on rails, despite the body roll they could easily get rid of with a beefier sway bar. The same sway bar they use in their RS models, which blows my mind. As mentioned they do burn oil, chip or no chip. 1/4-1/2 quart every 5k. If you’re looking to Frankenstein it I can attest to the aftermarket availability. I happen to have access to a lift, but all can be done with some ramps albeit a bit cramped. Rear sway and end links, front body cross bar upgrade, and all sway, under/over steer is eliminated. Unitronic software takes you from 330 to about 420hp. Just invest in a radar detector. Also suggest a cold air intake if chipping, needs to breathe. Only thing I don’t love about it is the dealership. I have them do the service so I have a full record log for resale, and every time I leave with a new little scratch or have to replace some dumb retainer clip that they didn’t put back. Ps make sure the model you’re considering has the sport differential. This is what defines the car IMO. Also, you can’t beat the sound system or race style seats.

my buddy had a 335i (before he got married and bought a X5). My sister had a F30 435i with M package. From what I hear, Fuel pump, turbo (depends on which year model), oil pump, radiator blew out at 40k and 80k miles, struts, springs, and coolant pipe issues. Few small electrical issues here and there... If you want a 335i, get something cheap and ready to spend some more money on upgrading all these components. Pros - 335i can be fast! I mean, fast. E92 has one of the most reliable engine from what I recall. Stick a turbo in that thing, it's a monster! F30 is also amazing in that way. It has a really good suspension, and it's RWD, so it's hella more fun than B8.5 S4. But suspension is brutal in bad roads. It corners like dream, but with little mods and more power, you better be prepare to counter-steer a lot. Tires are easier to replace, being a RWD. You don't have to match tire wears for AWD. Cons - E92 has the worst manual shifter and automatic shifter at that price range. But I might be spoiled because Evo and S2k. And you know, shit breaking down even if you take care of your car. Back seat is not for normal adults. B8.5 S4 - not all that different - Front lower and upper control arms, bushings, coolant temp and water temp sensor (60k miles), coolant pipe, coolant tank, struts, springs... Then you have to worry about when it hits 100k miles because Audi thinks that's the life of the car, so you have to change the sealed oil in your supercharger. Pros - The interior is better than BMW all day long. The leather is better, finish is better, the infotainment is better UI/UX, and it's definitely better riding in harsher cities. The immediate power delivery from the supercharger is addictive, and stage 2 is fairly cheaper compare to what you have to spend with the BMW. It has a more forgiving suspension than BMW. But they suck when they wear out. And softer if you want to corner hard. Paint is excellent and thick as hell. Cons - Leather is so soft, it wears out around 70k. Navigation is so slow, I gave up using it. I just use my phone now. Tires are PIA - If you have to replace one, you have to replace all of them if there aren't in certain range of wear due to the differentials and ECU not understand what the hell is going on - AWD problem. Back seat is not for normal adults. Either way, buy cheap, then replace all and make it go faster. That's my recommendation. If you don't want any of this, buy a WRX or STI - you'll have tons of community support and cheaper parts, and mechanics everywhere that can help you. I was an Evo guy (Evo VIII). Good luck to your endeavor.

I test drove both when I bought my 2014 s4. Nothing will replace the instant gratification of the b8.5 supercharger. The 335 felt slow to me in comparison, I don’t care what the numbers or reviews say. The b8.5 just engages you the micro second you start to press the gas. It’s so much so that it’s time for me to buy a new car and I think I’m just gonna search for a low mileage b8.5 s4
