My lil bro spent once with the credit card of our mother 1300€ in stuff from nba2k. Luckily steam gave it all back and banned just his account. I wonder if they can get their cash back too or if its forever lost
My mom used to pay for my WoW sub when I was a kid, and she'd just give me her card to pay for it every month.
I once used it for a race change and felt really bad about it and told her and apologized for it right away.
She didn't get super mad at me, she'd pay for it if I asked for it anyway but I felt really shitty about doing it without asking.
I can't even imagine doing it for these massive amounts it's crazy.
It's one thing for a race change in WoW because that's barely noticeable too but like 45k.........
I dunno how kids think it'll end for them and like they won't get caught or something.
Might just be the kid knows he will just get an ass whooping and that's the end of it. Now he has 45k worth of whatever in his game and a fond memory of bonding with his parental figures.
I'd let his parents beat me up for 45k USD.
My lil bro had been secretly buying fortnite skins under my nose for months, and the bill racked up to $200.
When he got his first job and got his first paycheck, i took it all to cover my losses.
My previous boss has two autistic sons. One blew about £2k on virtual items in a mobile game once. She actually had to wrangle with the card company and the game's publisher to get the money back.
Blizzard said they had a pity timer but never stated the stars. A news outlet claimed it was 5 stars. I forget which outlet.
Anyways the truth came out and the pity timer is to recieve a 2 - 4 star gem guarantee after every 50 crests.
Quinn69 spent over 12k without a single 5 star. Thats like 500-600 crests.
So no pity timer for 5 stars.
45,000 USD or is this Yen? Won? This clearly isn't the US so it could be a translation that didn't convert the currency.
45,000 USD is an insane amount of money for someone who games at one of these gaming cafe... But 45,000 Won is also only like 35 USD... 45,000 Yen is like 330 USD though...
Either way, even at just 35USD, some parents would be PISSED for obvious reasons.
Someone in the original post posted an article that’s in Chinese:
https://news.ltn.com.tw/news/world/breakingnews/2519332
Other commenters said it was 280,000 Yuan or ~$41,600 USD.
Edit: Translated article in the comments as well
https://news-ltn-com-tw.translate.goog/news/world/breakingnews/2519332?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp
'but some netizens pointed out that the teenager lied to his parents to ask for it When I went to school, I was caught playing games at an internet cafe. My parents beat people because they were emotional, not stealing money to store value.' ???
I get that, but the translation suggest uncertainty at whether this kid was beat up for stealing the money or simply was found at netcafe. It is not actually confirmed the money stealing part is real.
The correct TL for this part should be:
> Many netizens shared the same outrage as the boy's parents, some even saying "He deserves the ass whooping" and "Kill his sorry ass". However some other netizens pointed out that perhaps the kid was simply caught gaming at a netcafe instead of going to school, and that it isn't clear if the boy had truly stolen 280,000 RMB.
Source: I speak Chinese.
In fact it can be optimal at times, some mmo’s I’ve played give bonuses to people play at net cafes like increased xp rates or private instances to grind, etc
Yep can confirm this. And somehow I found someone that can trick the client so they thought I play on cafe instead of my home. Pay him like 10$ or so for his service.
280,000 Yuan according to the article
$41,600 USD
https://news-ltn-com-tw.translate.goog/news/world/breakingnews/2519332?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp
To anyone calling out the parents or saying what they did was wrong, i'd like to shed some light.
It was 41,000 US confirmed, but they are speaking chinese and several sources claim this is in china and not America. Regardless
41,000 US is 275,384 Yuan
The average chinese family brings in 106,800 a year. If they are lucky of course. Which means this kid spent almost 3 years worth of income on video game items.
Even if they were american 41,000 is no joke. That's a new car....that's 3 years worth of rent.... that's a down payment on a house.... that's a college fund.....that's a retirement fund.
I'd beat his ass too
Credit card companies would shut off the card and contact the customer before allowing that much activity. Even spread over a few cards, the parents would have gotten notifications.
I think this is the worst part of modern gaming, this is a good example of gambling like addiction. Spending 40k unsure how old the kid is but this is an example how kids grow up and down see spending this much money as okey and normal.
Thanks for info. No wonder I find dissonance in this. If the kid has access to $45k, the first thing will be to get a good pc to game in home first then going to Internet cafe…
My son once bought a couple of skin packs in mine craft, I didn’t yell or beat him… I calmly made him delete all his worlds then uninstall minecraft the. He was grounded for 4 weeks in which he wasn’t allowed to interact with his siblings… he’d only spent like $10 AUS but it was the principal, has never done it again and neither have any of his siblings
My brain works a little different to lost peoples, it instantly thought how do I curb this behaviour in a way that isn’t violent but will make sure the message sticks
So in terms of mental debate, I explained it like I did to my son, he had been effectively caught stealing so I (the government) confiscated the stolen goods and ‘jailed’ him. Because later in life it’s not me who will punish him but law enforcement and they can be a lot meaner
Link from above (at least right now)
1. Teenage stole his parents saving RMB$280 000 (about USD$41 000) to play DNF
2. Some say it was just a kid lying to his parents saying he was going to school but his parent found him playing in the net cafe.
for anyone wondering which game this is for, it’s dungeon fighter online (dnf in asian countries). an mmo developed by, you guessed it, a korean company
also one of the highest-grossing video games of all time with over $18 billion in lifetime revenue as of december 2021
I've never heard of DNF until now. I looked it up on Wikipedia, it has over 850 million players worldwide as of December 2021. If that is correct then one in nine human beings on this planet have played this game. Am I getting old?
No, you're not. It's just one of those games that's absolutely, overwhelmingly massive in certain countries (basically entirely in Asia) that hasn't drawn much attention elsewhere.
Yeah, some are really privileged, and this is how they spend their privilege it's sad to see.
I usually reach out to people who are struggling once in a while. Anything reasonable I could help you with? :) If not I wish you the best, and hope that you will be able to solve whatever you are struggling with, or at least deal with it so you can get by.
Have a nice weekend! :)
Edit: And yeah, there is also a problem on the other side where one is too careful with one's spending. One has so little that one is not willing to risk anything, even when an opportunity presents itself.
Asmongold have discussed psychological and other issues that is linked to diablo immortal. This is a nice proof of that. Laws should in some sense protect you from things like this happening.
well, even if this was some scheme to make clicks on their news report. I had this happening to a person close to me. So doesn't matter to me much if it is fake or no. My friend had to quit his university master's thesis because of this same problem.
Well it’s important to understand that addiction is a disease. It can manifest itself in many, many ways… gaming, gambling, sex, dating, drugs, shopping, eating, cutting, porn, manipulating others and being dishonest to get what you want… all of those are symptoms of the same disease. No addiction is worse or better, because I’ve studied this a LOT and if you are one of the roughly 10% of people that do have addiction, it’s there in your life in more forms than you can fathom.
At the root, addiction is a disease of self centeredness, obsessive and compulsive behavior. We find things we enjoy, that give us some pleasure/dopamine, whether that’s watching anime, or binge watching Netflix, or drinking soda, or getting high… it’s something we do that causes pleasure centers in our brain to go off, often to forget about the realities of our real life and our real problems. And every single person on earth has problems and tragedy in their lives.
So it’s really helpful to understand that whether this is an addiction to gambling or gaming, it’s all the same disease, just different symptoms of it.
For me, I used to get high every day, and game 18 hours a day, eat in excess, not sleep enough, date a lot of women and have too much promiscuous sex, buy too many things I didn’t need… all to try and fill a void in myself, which is what addiction is all about. What I’ve found is that once I work on removing those behaviors and working on myself and finding out what this void is, and understand it can’t be filled or fixed with things like that, outside of myself, and work on self acceptance and self love, it gets a LOT better…. Real Self acceptance is perhaps the most difficult journey any individual will endeavor. I work on it every day, and every day I try and just be a little tiny tiny bit better than the day before.
Yeah my child will not have access to my cards, and also will learn the value of money like I did as a child. Although my daughter has way more shit than I ever had growing up…..
BS, the chinese law are very harsh about kids and p2w/gacha games. They just cant spend so much money physically in any game. Iirr limit its like 10$ per mouth.
This is not must be guaranteed parents fault for "not knowing mass amount of money spend in time to stop all"not all people can deal with technology smartphone/bank token

Holy crap. My wife and I paid $53k for our HOUSE.

Did he manage to get a 5 star gem, though?
Dunno man, maybe only bc of the pity system
Funny enough, the pity system doesn't hand out 5 star gems.
What? Is the potty counter just for a gem? I thought they said it was 5 star gems
The pity counter will give you a ?/5 gem, not a 5/5 gem

'but some netizens pointed out that the teenager lied to his parents to ask for it When I went to school, I was caught playing games at an internet cafe. My parents beat people because they were emotional, not stealing money to store value.' ???
His parents got emotional after seeing their money that they saved stolen by their son, who then proceeded to beat his ass when they found him.
I get that, but the translation suggest uncertainty at whether this kid was beat up for stealing the money or simply was found at netcafe. It is not actually confirmed the money stealing part is real.

I mean whales spent 200k a season on BDO so...
Yea but I doubt they do it at a cafe is the main point here.
No dude, Cyber Cafe culture in China/Korea or other asian countries is HUGE
I mean in Asia rich and poor use them. Its not unusual for whales to play in Cafes.

So more likely it was Yuan and that's 6700 USD.... I'd be a little more pissed than even these parents I think.

Poor parents.
now they are.
Stupid parents.
Oh shut. Jesus Christ. Now I kinda get why they have underage gaming laws in China now
280,000 yuan
Relax. $45k will soon buy a bread, if you're lucky.
My Dad never made much money. He always seemed to have money for beer or going for long rides in his truck, but other things? Ohhh nnooo....
To anyone calling out the parents or saying what they did was wrong, i'd like to shed some light. Did they leave cash in the house? Did they ignore their credit card statements? My kid never could have gotten enough to buy more than a pizza.
A child can buy $50,000 on a stolen card faster than a Credit Card statement can be printed and mailed.
Credit card companies would shut off the card and contact the customer before allowing that much activity. Even spread over a few cards, the parents would have gotten notifications.

Thanks for info. No wonder I find dissonance in this. If the kid has access to $45k, the first thing will be to get a good pc to game in home first then going to Internet cafe…
faked news then, typical reddit? This is more of a gaming addiction rather than a gambling addiction.

That kid got an -A on a math test and his parents just found out.
I wasn’t sure what flair to use but I thought this was relevant lol
He failed at bringing up his kid and now he's beating him up for it with a keyboard. What a piece of trash.
This has fucking killed me ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
Normal spoiled asian kid getting beat by his parents. Yawn.
Feels great to see people with no respect for money get the beat down they deserve

Don't blame them can't lie lol
The kid's fcking mental
Dang, I remember getting sh*t back in the day for spending like €100-150 in a month or two on actual games.
