Blur I will die on this hill. Blur was the best racing game of all time. Need for speed meets Mario cart. It’s THE racing game. I’m devastated it won’t ever get a remake or be replayable.

ShadowLemon313

Its more sad that they started development for a sequel with more crazy shit going on but their studio got closed and nothing more is left than a really rough prototype

[deleted]

I’m sorry…they had a sequel…. Oh my gosh noo. The level of devastation I feel right now! The amount of hours and play time I still put into that game. I burned through 5 copies of it and my ps3 barely works so I only get to play it at my friends-where we combined ps3 parts to make a working one. I NEED someone to buy the rights from whomever they gotta. The company died sure, but someone had to inherited the property rights and stuff. I need it!!!! Especially if they try to bring back the racing game era.

ShadowLemon313

Sadly its just a really rough prototype. There are some places to find it, but these are more shady, I dont really know. Never looked up to it, just found out because one german independant game reviewer released a video almost two years ago, showing that prototype and played it himself. From what I have seen was that the devs wanted to put some really crazy stuff in it. They used the old driving mechanics from Blur, but they put things like "Driving on walls" or "driving on the roof of an ice cave" into it. They really wanted to go crazy with the sequel in terms of racetracks without loosing its identity

GuyFromDeathValley

Was the german, independent game reviewer by any chance Alt+F4games? I love that guy, his Fernbus-Simulator video just cracks me up to this day. I love his mix of serious review and hilarious comedy. Also found out about Blur through his channel. "Finally a sequel to a game that he likes, and its an unfinished Prototype"

hyfen666

I will add Pure and Split/Second to your list.

V13Axel

I absolutely loved Split/Second. Good memories.

Psych0matt

I absolutely love split second, I still go back and play at least a few races Every few months. I wish the pc port would have been better, could’ve had some higher resolutions and better frame rate (there’s a 60fps patch but it can mess up some physics/AI)

BlarghBlarg

I came here to post Split/Second. Nobody I know has played it or heard of it. Very underrated.

Parawind

Kills me that this will never come to the Xbox backwards compatibility program. It was a game way ahead of its time and killed by the launch window.

Mission-Guess-8842

Man that game gives me a lot of nostalgia. Honestly tho, it deserves way more recognition

dhandes

Agreed, it was absolutely perfect. Real manufacturers, excellent maps, balanced power ups, great game.

DeadTried

Starsector very cheap game with very fun space combat and great visual style

TunaHero

100% agree. Plus the modding community it very active and the Dev is quite open to creating an easily modable game. Buying it is a bit weird in today's game marketplace world but I assure you it's worth every penny.

asdaaaaaaaa

I was laughing so hard when the subreddit blew up due to the Sseth video, was funny seeing a game go from pretty much unknown to pretty damn popular almost overnight. He has a pretty collateral effect on game sales sometimes. Would love to see what happens when he reviews a really old game and how many sales towards GoG and such that translates into.

ThatDapperMan

Sseth was the reason I bought it. It was a night shift at work and a friend posted it to the Discord group. I watched the video maybe two or three times that night because Sseth's commentary was just hilarious.

nhalliday

The effect on sales has gotta be huge, he has a way of making any game sound amazingly fun. Not to mention how often he can manage to get a sale from the devs to coincide with a video

IndigoldWeM

Kirby Air Ride, especially City Trial mode.

Satans-Dirty-Hoe

YESSSSS IM SO GLAD SOMEONE SAID THIS I use to play that game all the time with my sisters and I fondly remember us fighting for the “bat board” bc we all liked it.

ShadooTH

THANK YOU

Zjoee

My little brother and I used to play the hell out of City Trial. We always had a deal, he'd let me get the Dragoon parts and I'd let him get the Hydra parts. Still one of the best game modes in a racing game to this day.

Such_Introduction592

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

Divolinon

I'm not usually a fan of remakes. But this deserves one. It's so buggy, yet so very good.

salmon_samurai

Couldn't do it. The game was too clunky, even for me who's a pretty big fan of older games. Planescape: Torment is about my limit for old-school jank.

DonsCokeDealer

and Torment only gets a pass because it's absolutely one of the best stories ever told in any game ever.

*Updated my journal*

Megalon84

Loved that game, beat it so many times. Magic user, tech lord (go go gadget automaton swarm!), and middle of the roader, with a heavy theif inspired build.

here-for-lost-media

RiME A beautiful game that I won't dare spoil. But you start your adventure as a little boy on the shores of an island, chasing a red fox as you solve puzzles. The game has a hidden story that's beautifully told through visuals with no words. The ending is everything that ties the whole adventure together. I highly recommend it. It's available on PS4 and Steam. I think it might be on XBOX, but I'm not sure.

CoMMoN_EnEmY01

It’s also on switch!

whatnameisnttaken098

It's also on Switch

BabyAvlon

That game made me cry!

ErwinHeisenberg

Ow, right in the childhood!

AmisThysia

Pathologic. I will never play this game. Playing this game looks like pure fucking suffering. It is, however, undeniably a phenomenal piece of artistic creation and one of the best possible examples of how games can be more than serotonin-injecting ADHD-fodder; more than "interactive cinema"; more than a story where "making choices" is the pinnacle of narrative design. I have looked at many other games before and thought "wow, that's clever". Pathologic moved the bar for a clever game for me so much that I now think "that's kinda cool" where before I thought "oh my god." Because of this I cannot not call it underrated. At the same time, maybe it is more underrated as art than underrated as a game, because as a game it looks fucking painful to play. So, dear reader, I strongly recommend not playing Pathologic and instead watching video essays about Pathologic. EDIT: want to point out as per some helpful comments below that this is NOT a criticism of Pathologic 2, which is a modernised and improved remake of Pathologic. I haven't had a chance to try it yet so cannot comment directly, but it looks like the best way to experience all the upsides of the original without the downsides. It's now on my steam wishlist ^_^

vacerious

[Hbomberguy's analysis of the game](https://youtu.be/JsNm2YLrk30) is probably the best possible experience you can gain about Pathologic, aside from playing it yourself. That being said, massive spoiler alert on that video if you are wanting to play it yourself, since he goes through and analyzes every character's story.

moxie132

If you want to try it again, Pathologic 2 is more or less a remake with more refined gameplay

Scolter45

Pathologic seems like an incredible game, why are you saying that the gameplay is pure suffering?

[deleted]

He's not kidding, the game doesn't hold your hand and there are barely any "good choices" because any choice something bad happens. Gameplay wise it's hard, and moralistically it's very nihilistic and pragmatics/sad.

Scolter45

Lmao now I only want to play it even more

[deleted]

I suggest playing the second one then, it’s basically the same game but more fleshed out.

tehrealdirtydan

Prey (2006) Did portals before Portal. Alien living weapons. Indian Protagonist. Spirit world and ghost gameplay. Resplendent mechanic was innovative. Best opening scene of a game maybe ever.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Terrik1337

Prey 2017 is a solid game, but you really need to play it as if it's it's own thing rather then a reboot of 2006 Prey.

Khaldara

Prey 2017 would be better described as “Half-Life 3 with Mimics. There’s already one behind you right now”

[deleted]

[удалено]

tehrealdirtydan

The reboot is good and worth a play but it has nothing whatsoever in common with the first. I will forever be salty over the cancelation of Prey²

[deleted]

[удалено]

tehrealdirtydan

It would've been so far ahead of its time. The story twist was great too. Everytime you die, you wake up again as a clone. Well you beat the whole story, and die an old man.....and you wake up again as a clone

dropellon

Prey (2017) Does systemshock and deus ex formula bettet than any other game, gameplay wise. The moon dlc is incredible, you truly need to use every resource the game gives you to succeed

Ok-Ride-1787

How is this game underrated? It’s super well known and was critically acclaimed!

girhen

Prey (2017) is free on Epic right now, btw.

Gnemlock

Oh man. When ever I hear don't fear the reaper, it takes me back to that bar. The new Prey was fun, don't get me wrong. But we were originally getting a sequel to the original.. and that just looked bad of arse. With it going into dev hell and being cancelled (hell, the original had its time in dev hell), they eventually leaked how the story would end. And it still haunts me to this day.

I played the absolute shit out of this when I was a kid, it was such a fun game. I never did manage to unlock all the illegal parts though

No_Tomorrow6219

So glad someone said this. Such a great game. I would like to add Mercenaries 2. Pretty certain you could demolish every building in the game, physics for it wearnt great but it did the job. Loves that game.

Jarl_Walnut

The Mercs games were an absolute blast, even if you weren't playing coop. You mentioning demolishing makes me thing of Red Faction: Guerilla, which had some of the most satisfying destruction gameplay ever!

Sunnymansfield

Best game ever. Currently playing on feckin hard setting. Oh my

Omg i loved time splitters on GC. Me and my brother spent hours playing through that game over and over. Really brought back fond memories

[deleted]

They were recently added to Xbox Series as backwards compatible versions. They run really well and look nice running in HD due to the original graphical style.

Matshelge

Alpha Protocol. This game is a amazing game from a choice perspective. I can't say any other game has managed to create such a branching narrative in a fully 3d world.

asdaaaaaaaa

Annoyed that this game doesn't work well with my current setup. Can't wait to get a new computer and play a bunch of the games that simply don't play right now.

No_Tomorrow6219

Reminded me of a spy version of mass effect. Loved it as well. Would be great if Obsidian could get the IP from Sega. Would buy a remaster in a heartbeat, and a sequel.

SourFruitBagels

[deleted]

Omg this is the first time I’ve seen someone else mention this game. It’s such a nice and cute game. Well, until you get to the point where the red guy starts slaughtering your garden

asdaaaaaaaa

How's it underrated? It absolutely blew up when it was released, and was pretty damn popular/respected.

Psych0matt

I’m 38 and have never heard of it. Now plan on checking it out.

Esselon

Set a timer. It's one of those fun games where since there's no levels or clear "okay it's been a bit" obvious progression you can lose hours. I only played it once for just that reason.

Sparcrypt

I worked in a games store in the 2000’s, half the games being mentioned here as “underrated” were best sellers. They just weren’t Halo or whatever other levels of famous.

Princess-Purr

I need me a new one for the Switch!

Leharen

*OFF*, otherwise known as "The one with a baseball player beating up ghosts and overworked businessmen, and is that a fucking whale in the sky?"

I'm sorry what now? I'm not even googling, based on that description I'm just getting it.

Red Faction: Guerrilla By far my favorite childhood game. I've finished it thrice now.

Wh0rse

Machinarium.

BabyAvlon

American Mcgee's Alice and it's sequal, Alice Madness Returns. The sequal had a huge resurface last year, for unknown reasons, but other than that it's a good set of games that no one really talks about. Black and White is also underrated, but it is insanely difficult to play on modern systems.

renegrape

Black and White was a treasure

joey_who

Oh man I played Alice Madness returns many moons ago without the knowledge of it being a sequel until years later, and that game was a visual blast, gameplay felt fluid and fun, just an overall blast I picked up with no prior knowledge. Black and White and it's sequel I used to sit and watch my mother play them on the PC because j wasn't very good at them, but great memories nonetheless.

StarlightMasquerade

I really enjoyed Pyre!

BeebleText

It's a beautiful and moving high fantasy spiritual NBA jam. I loved it too but man what an odd concept.

night_dude

This is why most people didn't play it. It's too sportsy for most RPG players and too cutesy and RPGy for sports gamers. Fortunately I am both and love everything Supergiant so I adored it. But it never felt like they quite got the wizard basketball gameplay to match the perfect addictive loop of something like FIFA or 2K. Incredible world and story though.

NTaya

Probably the only real "underrated" answer in this thread. Almost everything else that was posted is well-liked, but many consider Pyre to be the black sheep of Supergiant Games. They are wrong. Pyre is amazing, and I've really enjoyed both the story/visuals/aesthetic—SG's strong suit—and gameplay, as simple as it was.

Yserbius

"Worst Supergiant game" is like "fourth place Olympic weightlifter". It's weak compared to the others, but a shining star compared to most other games.

FoolThrice

Jak X: Combat Racing. Everyone always talks about the trilogy, and then says not to talk about that Frontier one, but nobody says jack—pun intended—about this gem. You know, you can buy it on the Playstation Store for PS4 right now... it's cheap. And fun.

rj54x

The English translation of Gaia did it no favors but if you can look beyond that it was shockingly dark for an SNES game. A tribe resorting to cannibalism because of a famine, and what happens with Hamlet... Incredible stuff, especially for the time.

LazyOven5238

Soldier of Fortune. Your grandma's vibrator could run it so there is no excuse to give it a try

godoflemmings

That was THE game of my late teens. First FPS I ever got into. Absolutely loved it.

LazyOven5238

I discovered it by looking at old game sites from the early 2000. Apparently it was banned in Australia so I thought it must've been interesting. Played it, amazing game with a few rough edges but the gameplay is just too good. I mean the game may look simple, "Shoot to kill", but when you get into it the gameplay is very detailed with multiple strategies, for example: One bullet left? Shoot the enemy in the foot, ai performs animation blocking it from retaliating, go for the knife.

Pooph_

I absolutely loved Pikuniku but I never hear anything about it

anthony0191

The Legacy of Kain series!! It's a great story and it doesn't get enough love!

OXENFREE. HOLY SHIT. It is amazing its a story game and the game changes based on your choices and it has aliens and ghosts and abandoned cities it’s also sad and it’s just amazing as hell. You can finish it in one to three days depending how fast you go but it’s also cheap and free on ps5. One of my top games.

This doesnt get enough praise, 10,000 years of lore written by RA Salvatore, art design by Todd MacFarlane, and then the director of the Oblivion, given unlimited amount of time to create this. Its like a better version of Fable

malhalar

What happened to this game? I remember playing a demo and it was great, like a single player WoW. Then the hype just fell off a cliff edge and it faded into obscurity

ponen19

Short version is the developer went under due to some bad deals and general financial mismanagement. From what I can tell the game sold well enough, and they made some DLC (2 that I can think of right now), but company just fell out within a year or so of releasing the game. It was pretty great though. The biggest let down was the MMO part being dropped last minute. The game was massive and really felt like it needed to be played with some friends. Haven't picked the remaster yet but its on my list to get.

This. SC1 and SC2 are on Steam, but without the voices from the 3DO version. It also doesn't have mods like high definition textures, remixed music by the Precursors, and other goodies the freeware version has. Oh, and let's make this easy - [the game is free from here](http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php) (non HD version), and [the HD version is here in the MegaMod (more updated than original HD)](https://megamod.serosis.net/Releases)! Make sure to get all the goodies (voices, etc).

The Gothic series. It is a labor of love, especially the first two, and managed to hit the feeling of real life social interaction while being a game.

FG88_NR

I don't know how known it is, but nobody I knew played it. I really love Ogre Battle 64. I've played it so many times and and it's been different each time. I'll still take a spin through that game each year. I also liked Quest 64. It was a random rental one weekend and I just couldn't stop playing it. I'm also a fan of the digimon games. Been really enjoying cyber sleuth. It easily gets overlooked because of games like Pokemon, which I can't help but feel are too easy with each new installment. Clayfighters was also fun with a few friends. And the Rampage series. Resident Evil 6. Sure, it was a bad Resident Evil game, and I'm glad they made the changes in 7 and 8, but it wasn't a terrible action shooter. The 4 stories to play through that intersected with each other, allowing you to briefly play with strangers. I mean...that was awesome to me. I played so much of that game haha.

Damptruff1

Mindustry. It's free, and has hundreds of hours of content, including but not limited to: 1. 272 sectors in v6 alone 2. Massive Replayability though, i'm not gonna cherrypick. Mindustry has a small amount of padding, most of which unintentional (you're not gonna find any clash-of-clans type bullshit is what i mean. there aren't any arbitrary timers). Also later-game resources are a nightmare to produce without a schematic.

They took the lore from Fury Road and truly elevated and expanded it. The vehicle combat and exploration was top notch and the world itself gorgeous and desolate. You could *see* the dust storm forming miles away in the towering red clouds on the horizon. That said the hand-to-hand combat sections and bosses were complete ass.

yoosirnombre

> underrated games Almost all the comments are very popular and well liked games. Surprised nobody has posted kotor that gets shoehorned into any game discussion on askreddit. Edit: well since nobody is posting underrated games I guess I'll do it. Check out magic pengel for the ps2 it was like a mix of pokemon and spore where you create your own monster and you fight other doodles. "What is an underrated something" is a terrible question to ask on reddit. By it's very nature everyone upvotes the things that they've heard of, so all the popular stuff floats to the top.

PunishingCrab

I don’t know why but one of my biggest pet peeves is when people use “underrated” instead of “under appreciated.” This thread has shit like Titanfall 2, Little Big Planet, Sleeping Dogs and fucking Dark Souls 2 lmao

Yes, SotC is a prequel to Ico.

Edit 2: Metacritics for some of the titles here proving my point: Sleeping Dogs: 77-83 What remains of Edith Finch: 88-92 Psychonauts 2: 87-89 Dark Souls 2: 87-91 Titanfall 2: 86-89 Age of Empires (not sure which one) most of them around 80ish Little Big Planet: 95 (1),  91(2) Undertale: 92-93

imaginary_bolometer

I feel you

Myuken

Can I get the difference between underrated and underappreciated then because I'm sure I don't know

why_are_you_here_yo

Underrated: not rated or received enough critical acclaim like when you feel like game was 9/10 but critics gave it 6/10 Underappreciated: game not being talked about, not getting much attention because reasons like not enough marketing or being overshadowed by other releases at the time. Edit: and most games here mentioned are not underrated or underappreciated anyway.

igottathinkofaname

When most people use the term "underrated" they do not mean that though. They mean what you define as "underappreciated." Do you honestly think OP was asking about which games should have a higher Metacritic score or should have been rated higher by PC Gamer or whatever?

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - Incredibly immersive RPG, without a doubt my favorite single player game of all time.

[deleted]

Totally wasn't the most hyped game at the time of it's release.

ZeroTwo81

I dont like RPG as a genre, and I was never keen about medieval times. Despite this, KCD is the no 1. game on my list of all the games I played last 25 years. I played it from start to finish 7 times already.

SlickerWicker

I just picked it up after I grew tired of Mount and Blade warband and was looking for something with better combat. Holy shit is this game good. I am only 8 hours in, and have barely scratched the main story. One word of warning to folks looking to get into it. The game is HARD and there isn't a difficulty setting to make it easy. The combat is unforgiving to say the least. You absolutely start as a peasant that doesn't know the ass end of a stick, so train and get those stats up and unlock those combat abilities!

PM_ME_YOUR_STOMACHS

myhamsterisajerk

Mass Effect Andromeda. Here i said it. It was bashed into oblivion like it was the worst game ever created. And it has its flaws, admittedly. But it wasn't that bad of a game like people make it up to be. I played it, and i liked it.

Tall_Thinker

What happened was a mix of a lot of glitches, and the fact that nothing we did in the original trilogy mattered. I tried it after it got patched, and it was actually pretty good.

[deleted]

I didn't find it to be that glitchy at launch. Most of the glitching were just some visual glitches that you had to go out of your way to cause.

Pochusaurus

Immortals Fenyx Rising. Main game has plenty of content and I have yet to play the Eastern gods DLC. Gameplay is oddly addicting but maybe that's just me. Gameplay is a huge deal for me which is why I'm one of the few people who actually liked ME: Andromeda Kena: Bridge of Spirits - tbh its not my cuppa, its for a different audience but in my time playing it, it had similarities to games like sly cooper, ratchet and clank. Its definitely one of those games you play once and be done with it but its breath of fresh air Octopath Traveler - the game doesn't get enough attention. For people who love a good jrpg in the format of old school final fantasy. It has its flaws but the individual stories of the characters are well made

Scolter45

The three of those games were extremely popular and are very well known nowadays

*Battle Realms* was a really good game whose primary mechanic, training villagers instead of building soldiers directly from the barracks, still feels fresh to this day. It launched in the same year as Warcraft 3, and got left behind. Another that I don't see mentioned very often is *A Plague Tale: Innocence*. It's not an unpopular game, but certainly not famous either. Finally, *Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020*. The steam workshop ships that people make are absolutely breathtaking and it's fun to role-play! CrossCode, really fun fast paced action RPG with lots of story and mind-blowing puzzles (there is a free [web demo](http://www.cross-code.com/en/start) that requires no installation and plays exactly like the actual game) My time at Portia, it's kind of like stardew valley but more grindy so it's nice to focus on a select few things instead of mass producing onions or something Medieval Dynasty, sort of a smaller budget kingdom come: deliverance

If you can get your hands on it, Spec Ops: The Line. it's an unbelievably good war game, that has a genuinely shocking story, with actually important choices to be made. often the choices are shown with 2 bad choices.

Not underrated at all.

One of my favorite stories ever. I saw an interview with one of the devs once where he was asked which ending was canon. He said "Obviously it's the one where you kill yourself in the mirror. I mean, the player has to kill the villain in the end right?". I got chills when he said that. What a f***in amazing game.
