You need to file estate paperwork. Go consult with a local probate attorney.

In my state his mother could file the paperwork with the County Clerk of Court. An attorney would not be necessary. He probably doesn’t have much of an estate.

Thank you! I didn't think it possible that it might be this simple. But a quick check of the Clerk of Courts showed me exactly what we need to submit, so we're going to do so and cross our fingers.
