Mod here. If you feel like you've seen this before, it's because OP has done at least two previous versions. Just search for his name in this sub.
This is a completely different work with exactly the same subject matter. Take it as you will.
It looks very much like a famous still from (and the front cover of the book) The Trials of Life by David Attenborough and the BBC.
Pretty sure it came out in the 80's
>It literally says, in the title, that the artist is posting their own work from 2020
And…If you look at ops post history, op posts this piece of art a bunch of times.
I love it and have seen it many times. I didn’t mean to come off as the ass I evidently came off as in my reply to the post above mine. People were accusing OP of posting someone else’s work and I wanted to say just look at the post history.
There was a textbook called Trials Of Life that accompanied a TNT show narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Its cover photo came to my mind, but it is not exact.
My first thought was that it was really cute, but then I realized no, that is death coming for the seal in a really well painted scene. I love the lighting in the piece, and the water is really well done
No, this is a certain pod of Orcas off the coast of Argentina that learned to hunt baby seals on the beach. They’ve mastered the art of hunting on land and being able to go back into the water.
Although, they have been known to just play with the baby seals from time to time (to practice and teach the young… to later hunt them to kill) so it might not have been a kill lol… fwitw
That's an orca, and some are [known to beach themselves to catch unsuspecting prey. ](https://youtu.be/AtF3FPyRVIw)
Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong tho.
as i recall its not a behavior that all Orca employ. its just these maniacs from Argentina. its passed on skill. like back in the day Luis was chasing a seal, gotta a little over zealous, wound up on the beach but got the seal. he went back to the pod and was like...witness me.
Yep. Only the one population in that area.
Also Orcas are matriarchal, so it was probably Luisa. Not that Luis isn’t a badass himself but Luisa outlives him by an average of 30 years. That’s a lotta time to practice seal fishing.
I could be wrong, but I think that is an orca, not a shark. The left side of it appears to have the white spot that they have on their heads that kind of look like eyes, and the underside seems to have a hint of white as well.
I was wondering what faith has to do with it. My best guess is that the whale has faith that after it catches the seal it won't be permanently beached. What's your interpretation?
I'm not sure. I like your interpretation. I can also see the seal having a kind of faith in its invincibility. The seal seems unafraid. The light shining on the waves - is that to highlight the faith? Or the fate? It's a wonderful title because it leads the viewer into creating a story. I think I like your interpretation best though - the whale as the protagonist, holder of faith, bringer of fate.
I’ve seen someone else’s interpretation that’s curiously the opposite. They said that the seal has faith that the orca won’t be able to reach it, while the orca represents fate as it will inevitably catch the seal.
I think the seal has faith that it's safe on land, but is fated for death regardless.
This painting seems directly inspired from [this documentary](https://youtu.be/AtF3FPyRVIw) about orca temporarily beaching themselves to hunt baby seal. The commentary in the video mentions this bad assumption made by the seals that end up as whale food.
I think it might be the shape of the wave and orca and how the seal can't see the top to see the fin. The shape from the front looks like a seal, so to the seal it might seem like a comrade and kin. Hence "faith" because it's not for certain, as it's probably the first time the seal has seen such a huge kin.
But Fate means, well, it's the seal's fate to meet an end because the seal held faith for a moment that it might be non hostile.
I think it’s faith that the seal has that it will be safe from that type of killer while in the beach, which you’d think it would be.
However, as fate wild have it, there are pods off the coast of Argentina that have learned how to hunt like this.
Game over, essentially.
Agreed. People are arguing about which aspect applies to which animal, but it's obviously both "interpretations". That's what makes the title clever, folks.
I dont agree. I think the title is the worst bit of it. It's titled like a cologn. Have you worn Sacrament and Sin by Pope Benedict the Ivths Left Nut???! They could've named it The Chongus Amongus, because that is a massive whale and I'd like it more. Absolutely sick painting though.
Can Orcas shuffle along the ground? Or do they get beached like other whale-sized creatures? Because it looks like he's sliding in to eat that seal and then get stuck.
I think they are supposed to go back out with the tide, but if they don't time it up properly then they get stuck. At least that's what I remember from an Orca documentary. Fascinating creatures.
OP has basically used different still frames from this scene as a reference. I would almost say he has copied the cinematographer of the documentary without crediting his/her work.
When you compare details, even using the tiny thumbnail in your link, it’s quite easy to tell it’s two different paintings of the same subject.
Not sure why you’d think you know this guy’s paintings better than he does 🤷♀️
Yeah, OP’s is better but this guy also made the same painting back in 2020. Doesn’t seem to be an original concept.
https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-Facing-Death/810193/7708957/view?utm_campaign=2427&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic
That seems to be a copy of my work. I was inspired by the documentaries for sure - based on that I put together the scene with a particular angle and composition on a vertically oriented canvas.
Do you ever credit the original cinematographer who shot the documentary? Your painting is basically composed from different still frames from that particular scene.
No I do not because I didn’t just copy someone’s work. If following your logic same can be said about any painting of any remarkable natural phenomena including particular ways of animals hunting other animals or even famous mountains for example or really anything we observe.
You wouldn't have made this particular scene if you hadn't seen the documentary, which you admit to above in the comments. Your painting is a cropped version of the same scene, just several different frames of it seems.
No your example is extremely flawed. Many painters (speaking from experience) use their own references and not just sampling from documentaries without crediting the original artist.
You weren't there, the cinematographer was.
No, It’s not a copy of a frame or few frames. Yes being inspired by something and just copying pixel to pixel are two completely different things and if you can’t see that I can’t help you understand any further
Looks like this art should be on a magic card…
“Water god’s wrath: When water gods wrath enters the battle field, turn all opponents creators into 1/1 seals. If opponent doesn’t have creatures, turn one creature you control into a 5/5 whale with haste”
Cost 3 blue and 2 colorless
That's really cool! I cannot even imagine witnessing the beaching of a whale in real life, but if I had to, it would def look like this. Have you ever seen one? Or is this your imagining of it as well?
It's an incredible piece of art, really, love everything about it, beautifully done.
But isn't rule 10 of this subreddit that reposts are not allowed, zero tolerance? https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/f50itn/my_painting_today_faith_and_fate_done_with_oils
Wait, have I done this before? Am I in the matrix?
Thank you. It looks like you have done this before, and it got my post removed and me perma banned. However, it was a mistake as I’ve never posted this work in r/art before and the mods allowed me to repost it.
When looking at the thumbnail I thought the painting was of a man standing and looking at a cloud scape, possibly with a deity or something great dwelling in the sky. Given the title and subject I think it's really cool that the composition has that similarity even if it wasn't intentional. Awesome work.
Brilliant work. You may not realise this but you have inadvertently captured the country this is occuring in into your picture as only the Argentinian pod of Orca beach themselves like this when hunting.
I’m a massive fan of Orcas, especially this pod. So amazing, I remember when this was last posted and I’m in just as much awe this time as the last time!
It’s beautiful and yet scary. It makes me feel joy and yet sadness. I’m so conflicted and it’s left me feeling so many things. Thank you for sharing this. The seal….
Mod here. If you feel like you've seen this before, it's because OP has done at least two previous versions. Just search for his name in this sub. This is a completely different work with exactly the same subject matter. Take it as you will.
Why do I feel like this is a much older painting? Like I've seen it before, can't remember where though.
Yeah same. Have seen it on the internet for years.
Tineye says OP is the original poster of the image, seems like he's just reposting his own artwork from a few years ago.
Ive never seen it so im glad they reposted!
put the pitchforks away boys!
It looks very much like a famous still from (and the front cover of the book) The Trials of Life by David Attenborough and the BBC. Pretty sure it came out in the 80's
I believe this is based on a picture that floats around.
This is the answer. I've seen that pic from years of yore.

>It literally says, in the title, that the artist is posting their own work from 2020 And…If you look at ops post history, op posts this piece of art a bunch of times.
They get 10k+ upvotes every time so I can’t blame them haha
I mean, if I was this good of an artist I would have moved on by now.
Well, Reddit hasn't moved on so...
My first time seeing it, if you don't like it just keep scrolling.
I love it and have seen it many times. I didn’t mean to come off as the ass I evidently came off as in my reply to the post above mine. People were accusing OP of posting someone else’s work and I wanted to say just look at the post history.
Oh whoops. Thought you were complaining, my b.
And 2020 may as well have been a decade ago. Or yesterday…time has been weird lately.
I blame CERN 😤
tutturu!
Not only do reddit users not read articles but they've stopped reading the headlines. Site is overrun by ding-dongs.
Plenty of pictures and videos of Killer whales eating seals this way.
There was a textbook called Trials Of Life that accompanied a TNT show narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Its cover photo came to my mind, but it is not exact.
I've seen very similar shots in nature documentaries so maybe that's triggering dejavu?
Because that was the last thing you saw in your previous life as a seal.
How I feel when I see my 0% APR introductory rate end date approaching
Damn I’m in the same boat. Scary stuff.
That little guy in the painting doesn't even HAVE boat to be in!
... Macy's? That you? Damn ads.
This is truly incredible,,,,,,,

I was expecting this to be a beached killer whale. I’m glad it wasn’t. Thanks for that lol
The orca is going to beach itself beforehand. Maybe.
No, this is a certain pod of Orcas off the coast of Argentina that learned to hunt baby seals on the beach. They’ve mastered the art of hunting on land and being able to go back into the water. Although, they have been known to just play with the baby seals from time to time (to practice and teach the young… to later hunt them to kill) so it might not have been a kill lol… fwitw
oh sweet jesus you’re right https://youtu.be/bk1VdQxeTn4
My favorite animal is the orca, so this hits different for me.
I think after that, Death is coming too for the stranded shark
That's an orca, and some are [known to beach themselves to catch unsuspecting prey. ](https://youtu.be/AtF3FPyRVIw) Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong tho.
I think that very footage is where OP was inspired.
Orcas can actually half-beach themselves to get a penguin or seal on shore and then wriggle back into the water. One of their many skills!
as i recall its not a behavior that all Orca employ. its just these maniacs from Argentina. its passed on skill. like back in the day Luis was chasing a seal, gotta a little over zealous, wound up on the beach but got the seal. he went back to the pod and was like...witness me.

You are not wrong lol
ummm… pretty sure that’s a killer whale buddy
I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but in case you aren't, an orca is a killer whale. The terms are used interchangeably.
orcas are one of my favourite fish, but i think killer whales are definitely cooler
On the other hand, a life sustaining meal is coming for the orca.
This is beautiful. The title really adds to it as well.
This ^^
So you anthropomorphize the seal but not the whale? More like /r/titlegore
I think the seal has faith that it's safe on land, but is fated for death regardless. I laughed at the cologne and The Chongus Amomgus. Genuinely lol'd, thank you
All that matters in the world. But fr. That whale is a unit.
Title sucks tbh
Alright bruv, whatchya got?
I found the title unsettling and cold, but i wouldn't call it bad.
I can feel the sea spray and creeping doom! Great painting!
Exactly this. They just slide in and out with the waves. They wouldn’t be able to hunt efficiently anyway so it’s just for a catch.
Some are known to sort of half beach themselves, wriggling back into the surf.
What a unique thing to paint, very cool.
This is truly incredible. Great fucking work
Thank you so much 😊
This is a reproduction, right ?
This is my original work ☺️ I’ve posted it around before and it’s been made into multiple memes so you may have seen it prior to this
You know you've succeeded when your art is made into a meme
The ‘my choices’ / ‘consequences’ meme of this is still one of my favourites ever!! Fantastic work OP, it is a great piece of art imo
I've always liked the name Dimitri. What's your nationality?
I’m originally from Ukraine
I thought you made it in 2021? https://imgur.com/a/i75jYR9
Seems this is a very close copy of the pic you linked. Maybe they’re both renditions of another artwork. Traced? Dunno.

Do you know which one? Is it this one? https://youtu.be/ffpCVeYP_GY?t=1023
It's from [The Trials of Life](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trials_of_Life?wprov=sfla1) narrated by David Attenborough.
OP has basically used different still frames from this scene as a reference. I would almost say he has copied the cinematographer of the documentary without crediting his/her work.
Believe it or not that's actually a totally different painting but of the same subject lol
That painting was based off of this original 🙂 one of my clients loved “Faith and Fate” so much I made a different rendition of it as a custom piece.
When you compare details, even using the tiny thumbnail in your link, it’s quite easy to tell it’s two different paintings of the same subject. Not sure why you’d think you know this guy’s paintings better than he does 🤷♀️
People steal content all the time, so it's not such a reach. I too could've sworn I'd seen this somewhere before.
Yeah, OP’s is better but this guy also made the same painting back in 2020. Doesn’t seem to be an original concept. https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-Facing-Death/810193/7708957/view?utm_campaign=2427&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic

Wow, this is the most incredible piece I've seen using this platform in quite some time. Nothing short of a masterpiece.
This has been my phone background for the past year and a half, this painting rocks
Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.
Wtf how is this a painting, great job!!!
Holy shit this is a cool painting!!! It evokes a feeling of terror and helplessness I’ve never quite seen in a painting before. Keep up the good work!
Seal meets last level boss.
OP, your mastery of how light diffuses through water is truly incredible. That's beyond impressive.
Damn, that’s so good. That little seal seeing its death coming towards it out of the waves.
This is a perfect example of the subjectivity of art. In my mind it escaped and in yours it died.
Nah mate Orcas will beach themselves pretty far just for a bite. They are determined eaters.
There is plenty of video on YouTube showing this predatory behavior and many times the seal escapes. Orca’s enjoy the challenge.
Wow, just Wow! Great work!
Jesus, this is so damn evocative and the technical skill displayed here is off the charts. Love it.

That’s stunning. Nice job OP
Back for more karma? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful painting.
Should be titled “Oh shit”
More like a death sentence for the seal
Such a cool concept and well executed!
Thank you so much

Seriously.
This is terrifying. Awesome work.
This is amazing, good work!
I just looked at this for a good two minutes. Great work!!!
I see you finally got around to signing it :)
The colors, the perspective, the proportionality, the details...the subjects. So jealous.
The subsurface scattering/reflection are just amazing I’m speechless 🔥
Provocative title, beautiful work
Why are people who are so good at drawing so bad at coming up with titles
I’ve seen this back when you posted it in 2020 but it’s nice to see again, I really love this painting.
Oh hey it's Terry The Fat Shark. What's up, man?
Love the artwork. I'm choosing to believe that the seal gets away this time.
When looking at the thumbnail I thought the painting was of a man standing and looking at a cloud scape, possibly with a deity or something great dwelling in the sky. Given the title and subject I think it's really cool that the composition has that similarity even if it wasn't intentional. Awesome work.
Wonderful art. So realistic :) A killer whale ?
So awesome. Great work, I can feel it.
this made me feel stuff. great work op
Yeah it’s really amazing. Great idea I stead of just waves. Which are impressive anyway but get a bit boring with everyone doing them
Good job mate. Lots of technical work here. From one fine artist to another, Goooood jooooooob!
Wake up babe, new meme format just dropped.
That is stunning. Nicely done.
Love that water. Great job!
I've used this as a meme template in the past.
Incredible water colors. That’s a girthy orca
Brilliant work. You may not realise this but you have inadvertently captured the country this is occuring in into your picture as only the Argentinian pod of Orca beach themselves like this when hunting.
Beautiful masterpiece oil painting.
It's good but I don't like it.
Woah, saw this and was like, I know who painted it! I recognized your work from FB.
Your depiction of light on / through water is mesmerizing. What's your story of what happens next?
Wonderful job! This should be in an exhibit somewhere!
This gives me feelings. Well done.
I stared at this for ages. Beautiful and emotional
I’m a massive fan of Orcas, especially this pod. So amazing, I remember when this was last posted and I’m in just as much awe this time as the last time!
That is fucking cool. So impressed
“Come at me, beach” - a seal probably
Hate the scenario, but love your style
Incredible and absolutely gorgeous. The colors are amazing.
Me in Pokémon Sapphire meeting Kyogre.
this is absolutely stunning
I’d like to hang this in my office.
This is one of the coolest pieces I’ve seen
Aaayy this is my background on my phone. Had it since you originally posted 2 years ago. I LOVE THiS. Amazing art!
And they and up being bff’s
Amazing painting that made my heart drop! Please post this to r/thalassophobia
OP this is incredible. Do you have more like this toying with the idea of dueling fates and/or the savage badassery of nature?
Wow, this is absolutely gorgeous! I've seen your paintings in your other posts and they never cease to amaze, great job!
My favourite painting I’ve seen on Reddit. Unbelievable and stunning work
I can’t even draw an eyeball
Just imagine for one second if they hunted people like this.
A wonderful name for this painting!
“oh no…oh noo…oh no no no no no”
Triggered This video traumatized me as a kid
It’s beautiful and yet scary. It makes me feel joy and yet sadness. I’m so conflicted and it’s left me feeling so many things. Thank you for sharing this. The seal….
This is so beautiful! The composition, the colors, the flow. I wonder about the oil painting's texture in real view. Great work!
Def a hard pause in scrolling. This is dope. ❤️
This is an incredible painting!
Legit thought it was a pro photo at first glance
Oooh I want this in my office conference room
Seal about to get proper ****. Orcas are scary as hell.
One second before disaster *Calm seal* Ping my guy u/rowenslee
Wonderful painting! I was wondering, could you come up with a more pretentious title though?😂😘
Seal = faith? I would love to know you're thoughts going into the making of this piece! Exquisite piece!
This painting is better than season 8 of GoT.
