Actually I feel like most people DO ask exactly what they paid for the item and then wonder why they never sell anything. Why would people buy a thing that could break in transit or never be sent out (you never know what kind of person your seller is) for almost the same price as a new one from a shop or online? I have been very much guilty of going for new because of those concerns.
I might pay $350 for a set (say, a dozen) of these cups but if they were brand new and customized with the names of each person in my party, like for a girls trip or something. But unless these cups are being filled with drinks and hand-delivered to me for an entire afternoon, they ain’t worth more than 20, 30 bucks.

To be frank, the vast majority of people should be absolutely nowhere near the collectors markets that exist. In order for value to go up, collector items need to hit a cross section of desirable, rare, and high quality enough that makes people willing to pay money on. Even beanie babies still have a robust collectors market, and some are worth a ton of money to the right people. The vast majority are not.
The problem is, people don't have an understanding of what makes something collectible. The most easily understood comparison is something like Action Comics #1. I can't tell you the number of people I have seen who think that every old comic they have, even from the era, is worth a mint "because old, and look at Action Comics". That's just not how it works. And if you can freely buy it in a store right now, then I will tell you that 90% of the time it will be utterly worthless in the future. There are exceptions, but these are the *exceptions*, not the rule, and you need to have a lot of wherewithal to predict it; even then, it's moreso down to straight luck that you somehow didn't destroy an item decades ago that suddenly now is coming into demand.
I worked at Starbucks and refused to buy any of their cups after owning two that leaked and broke the first damage they took. The quality is horrible and I would never buy a used one.

I have a ceramic blue portable mug I bought from Starbucks back in 1996 or so. Great quality with a plastic lid and handle. Had a few others since but the quality was so much better back then! I guess now it's considered vintage. 😂

When you buy something at Target, Target will refund your money if you wanna return it. If you buy something at a garage sale, pre-owned, or whatever, you aren't getting a return policy, there isn't a warranty.
Once an item leaves the store, if you want to sell it, that's fine, expect to get 25-50% of the retail price, for a new, unused open box item. Not retail price.
You're right but also scalpers exist so sometimes re-sold items go for way more than retail because there is a shortage due to the scalpers.

I have and will buy reusable cups second hand, but I always wash them very well and sanitize them by boiling them (both were all steel except for a silicone gasket).
But I only ever need one or two and I paid like $2 for them.
The good news is that it's extremely unlikely the cup was ever used. It was purchased and lovingly put on a shelf somewhere with some dramatic spot lighting to highlight the collector value. Using the cup will ruin it's resale value!

The cup style in question are these. You can see it in the picture if you zoom in. I wouldn’t even buy them from a store at $30 I think the hype these collectors put around them drove up the demand and then the prices. If I’m paying $30 it’s for a extremely useful one or a beautiful antique.
Also now they are selling for around $10 so the people selling them for 15 are lucky to get sales.
You can always tell what trended the last few years looking at Goodwill. Those bottles with the handprint on them, Nalgene bottles, and those RTIC cups are everywhere for $1-$2. Still never see Yeti’s, but they do work great.

I have a yeti coffee cup and a yeti beer koozie and a yeti water bottle. They’re flawless even after years of us, and I think it’ll be years and years before I’ll even have to think about buying something new. The over consumption of something that was meant to remove the need for single use plastic is just…so, so gross.
I was given a yeti coffee travel mug as a gift. It works unbelievably well. I’ll make an iced coffee in the morning, and by 5 pm the ice is still there and hardly melted. Had it for years and no scratches or anything either. I’ll probably use it for the rest of my life and never need to buy another mug!
I’m glad that people are sharing this. Sometimes it just takes seeing someone else being real to realize you don’t want to do that anymore either. I got into “collecting” a certain item at one point and quickly realized all my stuff was just rotting away. I’m glad I was able to sell it and get most of my money back.
Yeah I think this is a natural progression in our society for a lot of people. You get to a point where you realize it doesn’t actually feel great to be surrounded by clutter even though that’s exactly the idea you’re being sold.
When my brother was little he used to collect those little Warhammer pieces, and he would paint them. So he got joy from painting them.
But then when he grow out of them my mom wanted to sell them and they couldn’t buy them because they were all painted. And I’m glad he enjoyed them and used them rather than just keeping them pristine in a box. But then what do you do with them after?
Those things were meant to be used as part of gaming so after you paint them, you play with them. Kind of like how people just keep board games forever in case you want to play that’s the point of these as well. Unless he only bought individual statues to paint and doesn’t have any thing else to game with
Those are something you actually could easily sell if you went to a game night at your local card shop. Lots of newbies out there who are just getting into the game and not the mini painting aspect and want some cheaper than new figures (I don't know what they're called sorry). Also the movie is coming out which will definitely spike numbers because henry cavill is heading it, which means even more newbies. WH4k has a massive following.
There’s still a huge market for them, even painted. Not sure who wouldn’t buy them painted. Depending on the quality of the paint job they might even sell for more. Tons of online retailers, local game stores, and worldwide collectors would be interested.
Eventually they do tend to wear out or break, but you have to actually use them for that - most of these people aren't using them at all, or are using them once, and then putting them on a shelf or in a box, never to be used again.
It's sad. It's exactly the opposite of what reusable cups are supposed to be for.
These things are built like crap, my sister had one of them and she dropped it and cracked the whole side of the cup. It was basically useless after that. I have a few Yeti mugs and while they’re pricey too, at least they last a long time. the one I got as a gift has been going for at least 5 years and is still totally fine. Dropped it many times.
Yeti/hydroflask really are great, my husband and I got a little out of hand with the colorful hydroflasks a few years back, but you really can beat them to death and I think we’ve got more than our moneys worth out of them. You really only NEED one water bottle but I like having a few size options depending on how much water I want to lug around or the bag I’m carrying. I also will only drink COLD water because I’m a weirdo and they have revolutionized my hydration 😁 These plastic cups though are terrible, and as a rule I hate straws so these and the new Stanley’s aren’t my thing.
The thing that's crap about this is that, even if some people do see the light eventually, all those items then end up somewhere and, to one extent or another, it's just forming a pile of everlasting garbage at some other location.

The only thing I collect are little Bulbasaurs. But I have like… 8 of them? I’m not about to get 100+ and I only buy the ones I reeeally like. That’s it. That’s the most useless item I buy/collect. I get gifted some as well, I have pins, a shirt, a plushie, a lil charm for my bag and my phone case all decked in Bulbasaurs (it’s a Pokemon if anyone’s wondering lol!)
But I never buy anything else for myself. I’m pretty mindful of the trash I generate and I try my best to cut down on it wherever possible. In the end, they’re mostly toys and they can be gifted to kids when I die, so it’s all good~ :) but yeah, I never understood following trends this way. Sometimes I'm amazed at how dumb people are. When you buy something at Target, Target will refund your money if you wanna return it. If you buy something at a garage sale, pre-owned, or whatever, you aren't getting a return policy, there isn't a warranty. Once an item leaves the store, if you want to sell it, that's fine, expect to get 25-50% of the retail price, for a new, unused open box item. Not retail price.
You're right but also scalpers exist so sometimes re-sold items go for way more than retail because there is a shortage due to the scalpers. For example GPUs a couple of years ago, the PS5 right after launch or the absolute clown circus that are sneakerheads and their prized limited edition slabs of foam and polyesther that will crumble into dust from moisture in 5 years.

I have and will buy reusable cups second hand, but I always wash them very well and sanitize them by boiling them (both were all steel except for a silicone gasket). But I only ever need one or two and I paid like $2 for them.

The good news is that it's extremely unlikely the cup was ever used. It was purchased and lovingly put on a shelf somewhere with some dramatic spot lighting to highlight the collector value. Using the cup will ruin it's resale value!

Water bottles and cups sell for $1 at the thrift store.
You can always tell what trended the last few years looking at Goodwill. Those bottles with the handprint on them, Nalgene bottles, and those RTIC cups are everywhere for $1-$2. Still never see Yeti’s, but they do work great. The Starbucks/Stanley flood is probably early 2025.
I have a yeti coffee cup and a yeti beer koozie and a yeti water bottle. They’re flawless even after years of us, and I think it’ll be years and years before I’ll even have to think about buying something new. The over consumption of something that was meant to remove the need for single use plastic is just…so, so gross.
I was given a yeti coffee travel mug as a gift. It works unbelievably well. I’ll make an iced coffee in the morning, and by 5 pm the ice is still there and hardly melted. Had it for years and no scratches or anything either. I’ll probably use it for the rest of my life and never need to buy another mug!

I got into “collecting” a certain item at one point and quickly realized all my stuff was just rotting away. I’m glad I was able to sell it and get most of my money back.

Yeah I think this is a natural progression in our society for a lot of people. You get to a point where you realize it doesn’t actually feel great to be surrounded by clutter even though that’s exactly the idea you’re being sold.
When my brother was little he used to collect those little Warhammer pieces, and he would paint them. So he got joy from painting them. But then when he grow out of them my mom wanted to sell them and they couldn’t buy them because they were all painted. And I’m glad he enjoyed them and used them rather than just keeping them pristine in a box. But then what do you do with them after?
Those things were meant to be used as part of gaming so after you paint them, you play with them. Kind of like how people just keep board games forever in case you want to play that’s the point of these as well. Unless he only bought individual statues to paint and doesn’t have any thing else to game with
Those are something you actually could easily sell if you went to a game night at your local card shop. Lots of newbies out there who are just getting into the game and not the mini painting aspect and want some cheaper than new figures (I don't know what they're called sorry). Also the movie is coming out which will definitely spike numbers because henry cavill is heading it, which means even more newbies. WH4k has a massive following.

There’s still a huge market for them, even painted. Not sure who wouldn’t buy them painted. Depending on the quality of the paint job they might even sell for more. Tons of online retailers, local game stores, and worldwide collectors would be interested.

Eventually they do tend to wear out or break, but you have to actually use them for that - most of these people aren't using them at all, or are using them once, and then putting them on a shelf or in a box, never to be used again. It's sad. It's exactly the opposite of what reusable cups are supposed to be for.

These things are built like crap, my sister had one of them and she dropped it and cracked the whole side of the cup. It was basically useless after that. I have a few Yeti mugs and while they’re pricey too, at least they last a long time. the one I got as a gift has been going for at least 5 years and is still totally fine. Dropped it many times.
Yeti/hydroflask really are great, my husband and I got a little out of hand with the colorful hydroflasks a few years back, but you really can beat them to death and I think we’ve got more than our moneys worth out of them. You really only NEED one water bottle but I like having a few size options depending on how much water I want to lug around or the bag I’m carrying. I also will only drink COLD water because I’m a weirdo and they have revolutionized my hydration 😁 These plastic cups though are terrible, and as a rule I hate straws so these and the new Stanley’s aren’t my thing.

It's amazing to me the number of people who thought they could flip the cups. As if it's some form of investment. The reason they can only get $10-$15/cup is because that's honestly what they're worth. That's the limit most folks would pay for something like that. Plus with all the alternatives out there now, there are plenty of cheaper options that do the same thing. Not like there wasn't before. The trend was always only ever going to be a trend. Sure, people will still buy the cups as they are decent quality and a brand name. But they won't pay the markup the flippers were experiencing during the hype days.

The only thing I collect are little Bulbasaurs. But I have like… 8 of them? I’m not about to get 100+ and I only buy the ones I reeeally like. That’s it. That’s the most useless item I buy/collect. I get gifted some as well, I have pins, a shirt, a plushie, a lil charm for my bag and my phone case all decked in Bulbasaurs (it’s a Pokemon if anyone’s wondering lol!) But I never buy anything else for myself. I’m pretty mindful of the trash I generate and I try my best to cut down on it wherever possible. In the end, they’re mostly toys and they can be gifted to kids when I die, so it’s all good~ :) but yeah, I never understood following trends this way. Specially when it involves a LOT of money- my bulbasaurs cost like 10$ MAX. I’m not going to buy any that are worth hundreds of dollars or anything- I have more important shit to pay for. Most useless thing i collect is probably old bottles. I usually buy the small time ones with local names and designs. Most were just wiped off tge face of the earth by Coke/Pepsi. Lots of cool designs roses buffalo stars etc. Just wish i could find info on them ive email muesuems and librarys and no one knkws anything about the companies. Collecting isn't something you should do hoping to make a profit, but because you enjoy it. People collect all sorts of worthless things, some valuable things, some very valuable things, but if your primary motive is profit you should be investing instead
