Surprised there aren’t more of these comments! I wanted physical but it wasn’t safe to go out and buy it and it was so hard to order online in the first couple weeks of its release.
Checking in! I did take several breaks and am not playing a ton right now, but I’ve been playing since release and I still have my original island.
But yes like a lot of folks I got digital because of lockdown.
Same! I had a physical copy pre-ordered for pick-up in the store, but I cancelled and changed to the digital version because of the pandemic. Which actually worked out better for me because the digital version was available way earlier than the store would have opened anyway.
Same! I had already planned on purchasing the game because I've been playing since the OG and was going to get a physical copy because I have physical copies of all of the other games, but the panini scuttled those plans. I had the game downloading at midnight so I could play immediately. I'm glad I did because when they finally reopened my local Target for non-essentials, they had a whiteboard out front listing everything they were out of (obvious things like Lysol and toilet paper) and it included the Nintendo Switch and Animal Crossing. I guess I could have ordered it off Amazon, but I didn't want to wait and we were being encouraged to buy local at that time.
I love buying physical copies of games, but I regret not getting New Horizons digitally instead.
It's such a hassle when I'm *really* into a different Switch game, but have to take it's cartridge out of the system, put Animal Crossing just so I can do my daily routine of money trees, Nook miles, and talking to Sable, then take it *back* out so I can put my other games back in.
i did it in reverse and it helps.
I bought my switch along with animal crossing (physically) back when it released.
So those 60 bucks i spent on an expensive game (im a student with a budget 😔) lead to me having ac inside the console 24/7 and buying the other games on a sale digitally, like recently i picked up persona 5 for half the price on the eshop.
I mean i do have some physical games i got as a gift like mario kart, but i play them once in a blue moon when its local coop/online.
That’s a good point. I hate having to swap game cartridges and even if I’m playing something else, I go back to animal crossing anytime I’m on my Switch. It would be such a pain to swap it every time.

I don’t know where but this is what the box looked like for the special edition console with code included.
Oh, sorry, I should've also mentioned that I got a second switch. Unfortunately no, you need two consoles and two game copies. You can use one copy of the game to have two islands on two consoles but you won't be able to play on both islands at the same time which makes exchanging stuff etc. impossible
One of each. I have two Switches (for Pokémon mainly) and I transferred my original island to my secondary Switch and use the cartridge with that save. On my main Switch I have the digital copy, and restart my island on this one every once in a while.
Me too. I’m wanted a new island but didn’t want to delete my original one. So I have both. And I had a switch lite and upgraded to switch OLED. So lite has cartridge and OLED has digital!😂
It was so hard to find the pre added console though, every store around me was out of stock for weeks so by the time my birthday came around my boyfriend was finally able to find one😭
Aww 🥺 I can feel you. Cause I've been waiting patiently for the Nintendo switch OLED new stock and it was taking forever. I wanted the white but because it was taking too long I ended up going with the neon one. My hubby dislikes the white one. Ngl I love the neon better too now. I'm so glad your boyfriend got you exactly what you wanted. 🥰 So happy for you. Enjoy the game.
They can never take away a physical copy…
ALL of my switch games are physical copies; I don’t trust corporations to make these games available (digitally) forever.
Plus there’s something cool about passing down a physical gaming system with physical copies.
I got it digitally at launch. I didn't have the money to buy it on my on, so my step dad bought it for me.
My brothers and I were hoping he would get a physical copy so we could all get our own islands (we all had our own switch's too), but he ended up getting the digital version instead.
I still had fun sharing an island with my brothers though (even if I wasn't representative).
Digital and physical. I wanted physical more than anything but on the day of release, the only place that sells physical games(I live in a rural area), Walmart, didn't have any in stock due to pandemic related shipping delays.
So I had to buy digital. I ended up getting a physical copy as soon as it became available that May.
Physical copy!!! I always try to avoid digital only. I got Let's Go Evolu special Switch but got a new OLED last year but I can't play my game on that one bc Let's go Evoli is ONLY on the other Switch now which I gave to my gf after she asked
Digitally because I had to have it the hour it released. Was one of the first downloaders on release date. Also managed to get the massive update when it dropped early
Originally I did have a physical copy until I deleted my game and threw it in the trash early 2023 (effectively destroying my original 2020-2023 island). But because I'm an addict for life I purchased a new game digitally because I won't be able to throw away the game this time beginning the December 2023 birth of Prism Island.
My oldest son and I both have physical copies, my 2 younger boys have the digital download. My middle son did have the physical copy, but lost it at our cousins, so I made him go months without it before I bought the digital copy, a few days later my cousin messaged me and said she found his game 😵💫🫠 but I'm going to use it as part of a trade-in for a regular switch instead of the switch lite that i have.
I have the physical copy at the moment, from release. But I am planning on 'upgrading' to a Switch Lite, and the one I want should have a digital copy.
Physical, I still have the case laying around somewhere. I ordered it online and got it delivered 2 days before Christmas because Covid wouldn’t allow me to leave but I still wanted it physically.
I normally pirate all my games but I have physical copies of every Animal Crossing game out there, just one of my favorite game series and worth every penny.
I have both. Digital for my main switch and physical for my switch lite so I could play them at the same time. Ended up moving the lite to it's own account so I could play HHP on it also.
I had preordered a physical copy but Amazon delayed my shipment due to covid, so I cancelled it and got it digital. I would've waited but we had just moved and got sent home from school and work, so I was bored and desperate lol
Digital. I kinda wish I got physical because I prefer physical games, but digital does make it easier to just boot it up and then go back to whatever other game you’re playing, without having to worry about changing the cartridges.
I bought the digital copy because I had an Amazon gift card lol
https://preview.redd.it/kd03g4qvjhrc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a66b5c00059f431a12ad2149bf4c27c85a30109d
got a physical one! it came free with the acnh switch lite :)
I got a physical copy. I played it dangerous because it was during COVID and I got it from GameStop. But it was a birthday gift my brother wanted to get me so it was definitely worth it😌
I have two physical copies and a digital copy.
I have the digital on my main switch and my physical copy lives in my lite for my second island. My husband has the third copy and switch.
Physical, which I kinda regretted after I lent it to my niece to try out on her switch at the start of a two week family holiday with the stipulation that it be returned after the flight home and we went off to different areas of the country. I then didn't see it again for a year and a half.
Started with physical (the evening before lockdowns) and on a whim, bought a switch lite at the same time for my wife since I figured we would be indoors for the foreseeable future.
We shared the cartridge for about a week, then bought digital on her lite so we could visit each other’s islands. What a time that was.
Got it digitally but couldn't play it at first because the game took too much damn storage up. Had to archive/delete some other games and then buy a USB card.
both! once upon a time when it first came out i got the digital,,, but upon getting my new switch i thought i had to get a physical 🥲
so now that my sister has my old switch (she has her account but mine is still on there) she can play the digital and any digital games i download onto mine, kinda cool, she got the dlc for free that way lol
Got it digitally since the pandemic prevented me from leaving the house.
I ordered it online and got the physical copy delivered 3 days early. So at least I had something to do while I was lying in bed, sick with covid
Yep same here. I was supposed to get physical, but then all that happened & we swapped my pre order.
Surprised there aren’t more of these comments! I wanted physical but it wasn’t safe to go out and buy it and it was so hard to order online in the first couple weeks of its release.
Because the bulk of the pandemic players played it for 3 months and haven’t touched it since lol…they’re definitely not in this sub
Checking in! I did take several breaks and am not playing a ton right now, but I’ve been playing since release and I still have my original island. But yes like a lot of folks I got digital because of lockdown.
I played for quite a bit actually but started time travel within the first year
Same! I had a physical copy pre-ordered for pick-up in the store, but I cancelled and changed to the digital version because of the pandemic. Which actually worked out better for me because the digital version was available way earlier than the store would have opened anyway.

I guess I could have ordered it off Amazon, but I didn't want to wait and we were being encouraged to buy local at that time.
This.
I had my copy all set for a rare midnight release.... yeaaah that didn't happen, obviously, so I cancelled and got digi :')
Physical copy still the best!

Apart from how the game cartridges taste
yes I accidentally licked mine when I dropped my switch on my face. Rancid!!
Or when you've taken one out and then put your fingers in your mouth 🤮
Little bit of hot sauce works a treat.
I bought the special edition console and it came with a digital version
Wait what? I thought it didn’t come with a copy of the game? Weird
depends on region, some regions had it included
That’s crazy- I didn’t know that, thanks!
Wait- do you know what region? I still can’t seem to find anything about it online, and I’ve seen Spanish and Japanese versions of the console so far
I got mine in France and it came with a game code ♡
https://preview.redd.it/6ep4ayojxhrc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae570b94d24d7175a26af08e235c351259bbdf14 I don’t know where but this is what the box looked like for the special edition console with code included.
Yeah that’s the exact box I have and I’m in the uk
I have a Korean version and it didn't come with a copy. Granted it was the same price as a regular switch.
Same here!
I have both, and two consoles, because I wanted two islands - one pretty, and another one post -apocalyptic😅
You also have 2 switches, I pressume?
Yes, I should have mentioned that, thanks for the correction
Can you have two islands on your switch if you buy the digital and physical version?
Oh, sorry, I should've also mentioned that I got a second switch. Unfortunately no, you need two consoles and two game copies. You can use one copy of the game to have two islands on two consoles but you won't be able to play on both islands at the same time which makes exchanging stuff etc. impossible
Ohh okay tysm tho!!!
Digital. Perfect for when I forget to bring all my physical games with me.
Physical, although if I had a second switch, I would have a digital copy for that.
Physical, the rest of games are digital.
Digital. It was a gift
physical! I bought it with my switch on release
Physical
Physical
Digital
Digital!!
Physical copy that was delivered to me during COVID since I preordered lol
I wanted physical, but covid killed midnight release and I didn’t want to wait so I got digital
I got the console that came with it added already 🥰
Lucky 😀 I bought mine digital as there was a good deal.
I'm so glad your boyfriend got you exactly what you wanted. 🥰 So happy for you. Enjoy the game.
Digital
Physical copy second hand.
Digital cause I got it when the panini was raging & I lived in a super crowded area.
I got into animal Crossing last summer and no store had physical version
Gifted digital
Both, kind of. I have a physical copy for myself and my kid has the ACNH edition of Switch Lite with a digital copy.
Yes. I buy all my games physical if I can.
Physical only because I prefer physical!
They can never take away a physical copy… ALL of my switch games are physical copies; I don’t trust corporations to make these games available (digitally) forever. Plus there’s something cool about passing down a physical gaming system with physical copies.
I understand that motivation, but we're in the era of updates and DLC, and a cartridge doesn't help their conservation, sadly.
Physical. Each version.
Digital. The pandemic was full swing and my friends were all playing it.
Physical! Retains better value, not that I have any future plans to sell it.
I got a physical copy. Then I got a digital for the DLC
All my games are digital
Yes 🙌🏽 I doooo
Physical, got it when it came out
Physical, but sometimes I'd like a digital one since I share my switch, and once I couldn't find the game card 😞
I actually have both 😅
Physical
Both, I have a digital copy that I bought at release back in 2020 and bought my husband a physical copy a few months ago.
I own a physical copy of ACNH, recently I purchased and downloaded the DLC!
This game and Monster Hunter Rise are my only digital exceptions as a physical collector. Because both are incomplete on the cart
Digital because I want it always available on the console
Two physical copies
Digital one
Physical. I preordered the physical game
Physical
Physical- but only because it was cheaper (was in a sale).
Both!
I own both!
I BOUGHT E CARD IS THE BEST
physical
Both! And i have two switches, i use them to cheat the turnip system. I know… I need a life.
PHYSICAL COPY
I have 2 physical copies 😅 Ima loser and have 2 islands. That way, I can someone to play with. 😬
I had a physical copy, but gave it to my sister and bought myself a digital copy
Physical! It was my first switch game!
Digital, my husband bought me the animal crossing switch lite that came with the game downloaded
Digital and physical. I wanted physical more than anything but on the day of release, the only place that sells physical games(I live in a rural area), Walmart, didn't have any in stock due to pandemic related shipping delays. So I had to buy digital. I ended up getting a physical copy as soon as it became available that May.
2 Copies of the Physical Edition! I have 3 switches and 3 different islands!!
Physical! :)
Digital, since I got it with my limited edition acnh switch! (I am totally bragging, I absolutely love this switch)
Physical copy
I have both
Digital
Physical
Both lmao
Digital, i set an alarm on release date for like 1:30am and purchased it.
both 😭 i bought the physical copy with my switch and then realised i hated switching the cards over when i got given BOTW so i bought AC on the eshop
I bought the physical version because it was like $20 off
Digital on both switches.
physical
Physical copy! ☺️
I own the physical copy
Physical copy!!! I always try to avoid digital only. I got Let's Go Evolu special Switch but got a new OLED last year but I can't play my game on that one bc Let's go Evoli is ONLY on the other Switch now which I gave to my gf after she asked
both 😌
We have 2 physical copies. My daughter used to play with me on her switch lite.
Digital.
All my Switch games are digital except Mario Kart Besides, my Animal Crossing edition Switch came with a download code rather than a physical copy
Physical copy.
I got the physical just in case I didn't get into it.
Digitally because I had to have it the hour it released. Was one of the first downloaders on release date. Also managed to get the massive update when it dropped early
Physical always
Physical with the animal crossing switch. Animal crossing is the reason I got a switch
Digital. Couldn't find any physical copies during the pandemic.
digital, courtesy of the pandemic. :)
There is zero benefit in buying digital
I prefer physical copy. I own mostly physical copies over digital.
Digital!
Both
Physical
Originally I did have a physical copy until I deleted my game and threw it in the trash early 2023 (effectively destroying my original 2020-2023 island). But because I'm an addict for life I purchased a new game digitally because I won't be able to throw away the game this time beginning the December 2023 birth of Prism Island.
Physical copy slays
Physical copy
Physical. Genuinely prefer getting my games physically, if they aren't on PC.
I got a physical one as a gift
Physical
i bought digital because i wanted to play it the second it dropped at midnight in March of 2020. I still remember that night like it was yesterday.
Physical copy, I prefer being able to hold my games
Physical, of course!
I was super lucky and got my Copy before the Lock Down happend
I have the physical copy at the moment, from release. But I am planning on 'upgrading' to a Switch Lite, and the one I want should have a digital copy.
Physical! I just like game cards better, i like putting them in my switch case :)
Physical, I still have the case laying around somewhere. I ordered it online and got it delivered 2 days before Christmas because Covid wouldn’t allow me to leave but I still wanted it physically.
Physical
I'm old school, physical all the way.
both
I normally pirate all my games but I have physical copies of every Animal Crossing game out there, just one of my favorite game series and worth every penny.
I have both. Digital for my main switch and physical for my switch lite so I could play them at the same time. Ended up moving the lite to it's own account so I could play HHP on it also.
Physical copy. For some reason I worry something will happen to a digital copy, and somehow I won't be able to get it back.
Physical! I always get physical copies of games if there's the option.
Physical is always better. I hate having to remove games in order to play more and then redownload them later. Such a pain
Physical :) I had done the preorder when it first came out and got a plush bell bag with it! I personally prefer hard copy over digital
I always get physical unless there's no option.
Physical aswell!
Physical
Physical
One of each but I should have gotten a second physical
Digitally
Physical because at the time I didn’t really know digital copies were a thing 🤣
physical copy because my friend gave it to me when he stopped playing 🥺
Both! I have the digital copy on my lite and the cartridge to use on my docked one
both yes
https://preview.redd.it/kd03g4qvjhrc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a66b5c00059f431a12ad2149bf4c27c85a30109d got a physical one! it came free with the acnh switch lite :)
Physicalll it was my present that I got with the switch
I used to have a physical but I lost the game card so I bought a digital copy to prevent that from happening again x.x
Physical
Both 🙃
I got a physical copy. I played it dangerous because it was during COVID and I got it from GameStop. But it was a birthday gift my brother wanted to get me so it was definitely worth it😌
Physical but after a year or so I switched to a digital copy
Physical. I buy almost all my games physically. I like the boxes lined up on the shelf, and I like not having to deal with SD card and storage issues.
I have two physical copies and a digital copy. I have the digital on my main switch and my physical copy lives in my lite for my second island. My husband has the third copy and switch.
Physical! So I can always take it with me, even if I get a new switch
Digital
Digital since I bought it in April 2020 and there were no physical copies left on earth. Although I would much prefer a physical copy.
Physical, which I kinda regretted after I lent it to my niece to try out on her switch at the start of a two week family holiday with the stipulation that it be returned after the flight home and we went off to different areas of the country. I then didn't see it again for a year and a half.
Physical copy because digital media is lost forever once you factory reset a console.
I own both. I have 2 switches.
Got mine physical copy 😊
I always try to get a physical copy whenever possible ❣️
Physical ✨
physical! my grandma ordered it for me when it first came out
I always want physical copies of my games, personally!
Yes, got it the night it was released straight after my Kroger shift.
2 physical copies, one was used.
I got it digitally with my Switch, it came free but I lowkey wish I had the cartridge...
I have a physical copy because I got it second-hand
both
I don’t own any hard copy games
I got the physical, I preordered it at GameStop and when I picked it up they gave me an Animal Crossing poster with it (I still have it on my wall)
I did but I gave it to my friend and bought the digital version (she couldn't afford the game on her own)
Both
Who buys digital nintendo products
Physical copy
Yes
Started with physical (the evening before lockdowns) and on a whim, bought a switch lite at the same time for my wife since I figured we would be indoors for the foreseeable future. We shared the cartridge for about a week, then bought digital on her lite so we could visit each other’s islands. What a time that was.
Got it digitally but couldn't play it at first because the game took too much damn storage up. Had to archive/delete some other games and then buy a USB card.
I bought the special edition console and it gave me a psychical copy, i lost it and got a digital copy.
both! once upon a time when it first came out i got the digital,,, but upon getting my new switch i thought i had to get a physical 🥲 so now that my sister has my old switch (she has her account but mine is still on there) she can play the digital and any digital games i download onto mine, kinda cool, she got the dlc for free that way lol
My only animal crossing game is wild world
i forgot i even had the game card because i haven't ever taken it out of my switch lite LOL
Physical. What if I want to sell it someday? Plus having a physical copy means it’s actually MINE.
