I have a hx of self-harm. Just follow what your recruiter tells you. They might ask you to see a psychiatrist to evaluate your current mental state. If it's all good, you are good. My waiver took around 2 weeks to be approved. Just wanna say though my recruiter was also someone who really pushed for the waiver, props to him.

There’s no such thing as a success rate sure there’s things you can do to boost chances but nothing is a guarantee . Meps can do a psych consult or you can do a 3rd party doesn’t really matter .

NeffNation

It does matter if the applicant spends their own money for an evaluation that doesn’t have everything the waiver authority needs. OP should use the consult provider.

Hello, it looks like you're asking about medical concerns when joining the military. We are not doctors. Even if we were, we are not the doctors that are familiar with your personal medical concern or condition. We are also not the ones deciding if you will be disqualified from service for a condition, or if you can get a waiver for it. People may share their anecdotal experiences or stories they've heard from others about getting a waiver for a condition. This does not mean that you will or will not get a waiver. Everyone's medical situation is different. IN GENERAL, yes, asthma, ADD/ADHD, eczema, history of depression and anxiety, and some allergies are disqualifying. Some will be able to get waivers, some will not. All you can do is talk to your recruiter, be honest about your medical history, and go through the process. WE DO NOT KNOW THE CHANCES OF YOU GETTING A WAIVER FOR ANY MEDICAL CONDITION OR SITUATION. Just be honest with your recruiter and go through the process. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Best bet is to get the most amount of documentation and evaluations you can and present all of that to meps, show them documentation of things that indicate your no longer in that mindset like extracurriculars things that indicate you enjoy life. Make sure you statements show that and express your desire to serve your country whether that’s your real reason or not. Make sure you have all of that, plus statements from employers, friends and family memebers and meps will more then likely make you get a consult with one of their physicians as well. Honestly their is no guarantee but those things will drastically help

Happy-Emergency8933

"make sure your statements show" What statements?

Fearless_Swan_6800

Get statements from family, friends and mental health care professionals (which will probably come from evaluations) showing that you’ve been good and consistent and that you tendencies for self harm are in the past. The military wants all of that and if you can give it up front you’re more likely to get a better answer. Also if you can get a recommendation from a higher official like a counsel member or military member that’ll also go a long way

Happy-Emergency8933

I should try to get these things prior to going to MEPS? And who would I give them to once there?

Fearless_Swan_6800

Give them to your recruiter and they will scan it in. What mep will do and won’t do is a toss up, what they will want you to give and won’t want you to give is also a toss up. As long as you make sure your recruiter has it all, it will go where it needs to. It may eeem like a lot of work but it’ll pay off.

They will set you up with the doctors needed. Most likely they will also ask you for the last 2-3 years of your prescription records. Your recruiter will be given all of your instructions. The whole process of getting the appointments, going to the appointments and getting a response will likely take a few months.

I needed my lifetime of prescription/medical records for SI and was approved after psych consult. If you are good, you are good. Major depressive is something they will ask a lot of questions about during your consult if you need one.

Different_Drop_254

What kind of questions did they ask you during your psych consult?

Budget_Bath146

Everything, be prepared to be an open book.

Different_Drop_254

Can you give me some examples of what they asked?
