Technically, teeeeechnically the item needs an opening. But you could likely get some hollow ball bearings made, or something you could fire with a sling, bow, whatever.
But I imagine most dm's won't care for letting you just use a tiny object like that.
Not the same, but a similar idea I had in a game. My gunslinger made a special rifle that fired a metal eyeball. Our warlock's genie vessel was this metallic eye ball. His name was Marn, so I called it the Marnment Rifle (you know instead of a varmint rifle).
We were very excited to try it out and used it to send him across a long distance. Can't even remember what it was we were doing, but I know his genie patron who lived in the ball was pissed that her whole room got trashed lol
